JETFIX FILES FOR CORRECTING WEAK/MISSING JETS

Xerox has developed a technique that is effective in correcting weak and missing jet.
The technique has been demonstrated at being about 50% effective in fixing a missing
jet that the printer's Eliminate Light Stripes cleaning function cannot fix. The jetfix
technique is encapulated in four snippet files, one for each of the printer's ink colors:
	cyan 8400_jetfix_c.ps
	magenta	8400_jetfix_m.ps
	yellow 8400_jetfix_y.ps
	black 8400_jetfix_k.ps

You simply upload the appropriate file matching the color of the missing jet to your printer.
The JetFix technique is very good at removing foreign material that is clogging a printhead
jet. The JetFix technique cannot fix jet problems created by using non-Xerox ink.

Sending a JetFix snippet files to your printer makes your printer print 5 solid-
fill prints using a special jet-drive voltage. (For example, the snippet
8400_jetfix_c.ps prints five cyan sold-fill prints.) This is followed by a
cleaning cycle. The entire process takes about five minutes. If this technique
fails to correct the problem, contact your local service provider.

This document describes several methods for uploading a JetFix snippet file
to your printer. First, select the procedure appropriate to your computer's operating
system to upload the files to your printer. The following sections describe the procedures
available within this readme file:

Section I. USING FILE upload FROM CENTREWARE INTERNET SERVICES (CWIS)
Section II. USING THE COMMAND LINE PROMPT ON WINDOWS
Section III. USING INTERNET EXPLORER (IE) BROWSER ON WINDOWS
Section IV. USING AN FTP TOOL ON MACINTOSH
Section V. USING FTP ON MAC OS X

I. USING FILE upload FROM CENTREWARE INTERNET SERVICES (CWIS)

Note: This is the recommended method for network connected printers.

A.	Upload the File to the Printer using Centreware IS. Centreware IS is a
webpage built inside the Phaser 8400 printer.

	1.	From the printer's front panel, print the Configuration Page to obtain the
printer's IP address. If you already have the IP address, go to Step 2.

	2.	From any browser window, enter the IP address of the printer to which you
want to upload the Printhead firmware update file. The CentreWare IS Home
	  	page for the printer displays.

	3.	Click the Print button on the Home page to display the CentreWare IS Print
	  	tab.

	4.	On the Print Tab, click "File upload" from the left navigation tree to
display the File upload page in CentreWare IS.

	5.	Click the Browse button and locate the JetFix file; for example
8400_jetfix_k.ps to correct a missing black jet.

	6.	Click the Print Immediately radio button, and click the green button.

	7.	The printer processes the file, prints 5 solid fill prints and then
runs a cleaning cycle. A Light Stripes test page prints indicating
if all the jets are working correctly.

	8.	If an error occurs during the process, turn the printer off for 60 seconds,
turn it back on, and upload the file again.

II. USING THE COMMAND LINE PROMPT ON WINDOWS

You need the printer's IP address. From the printer's front panel, print the
Configuration Page to obtain the printer's IP address. Your printer must be connected
using the printers Ethernet port.

Note: Type the information as shown in the following example without the quotes (").

A.	Upload the File to the Printer using DOS
	1.	Note the location of the JetFix snippets on your computer.

	2.	Open the My Computer icon on your desktop. Navigate to the identified folder
of the snippets. Take note of the file name of the snippet file you want to
download to the printer, and the computer's drive letter. In this example, the
primary drive letter is "C", and the snippet file is at the root of the drive,
and the file name is "8400_jetfix_k.ps" (to fix a missing black jet).

	3.	Click the Start button on the taskbar.

	4.	Scroll to the menu item Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

	5.	A window appears. Type "ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (no quotes), where
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the printer's IP address, and click OK.

	6.	An FTP client opens, and the following message displays, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
		is the printer's IP address:

			Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
			220 FTP server ready.
			User (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:(none)):

	7.	Press Enter. The following message displays:

230 Password not required for (none).
			ftp>

	8.	Type "lcd c:\" and press Enter. The following message displays:

			Local directory now c:\

	9.	Type "binary" and press Enter. The following message displays:

			200 Type set to I

	10.	Type "put 8400_jetfix_k.ps" and press Enter. The following message
	  	displays after a few seconds:

			200 PORT command successful.

	11.	After about five seconds, the following message displays:

150 BINARY data connection for 8400_jetfix_k.ps

	12.	After about 30 seconds, the following message displays, which indicates
that the file is finished uploading:

ftp: xxxx bytes sent in yyy Seconds zzz Kbytes/sec.
         ftp>

	13.	After the file is finished uploading, type "bye" and press Enter.

	14.	The printer processes the file, prints 5 solid fill prints and then
runs a cleaning cycle. A Light Stripes Test page prints indicating
if all the jets are working correctly.

	15.	If an error occurs during the process, turn the printer off for
60 seconds, turn it back on, and upload the file again.

III. USING INTERNET EXPLORER (IE) BROWSER ON WINDOWS

You need the printer's IP address. From the printer's front panel, print the
Configuration Page to obtain the printer's IP address.

A.	Upload the File to the Printer via Internet Explorer

	1.	Note the location of the JetFix snippets on your computer.

	2.	Open the My Computer icon on your desktop. Navigate to the identified
		location and view its contents.

	3.	Open IE. If not set by default, verify that the Tools > Internet Options >
Advanced tab > Enable Folder View for FTP Sites checkbox is selected.

	4.	Type the printer's IP address in the browser's Address field, where
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the printer's IP address:

			FTP://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

	5.	Drag and drop the file 8400_jetfix_k.ps (in this example, to fix
a missing black jet) to the browser window.

	6.	The printer processes the file, prints 5 solid fill prints and then
runs a cleaning cycle. A Light Stripes Test page prints indicating
if all the jets are working correctly.

	7.	If an error occurs during the process, turn the printer off for
60 seconds, turn it back on, and upload the file again.
