Roland Checksum Calculator
Version 1.3 - January 1997

This program is a tool to assist you in creating System
Exclusive messages. Roland instruments use a checksum number
to check for errors when creating system exclusive (SysEx)
messages. It can be difficult to compute these numbers as
they are expressed in hexadecimal (hex) rather than decimal
otation. This calculator will convert hex to decimal,
decimal to hex, and will also give you the checksum amount when
you input the correct hex number string.

Program Requirements
--------------------
In order to run the Checksum Calculator, you need the following :
 - A computer running Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT
 - At most, 1.7MB of free space on your hard disk

Installation
------------
Run SETUP and follow the prompts to copy the files into the proper
locations on your hard drive.
The setup program will put a Checksum32 icon in your Programs group
of the Start menu. Select it to start the program.

Using the Calculator
--------------------
Type the address and data bytes (not the header bytes) into the box
at the top of the screen and press Enter. The Roland checksum will
be shown in the checksum box below.

For example, take the GS Reset command :
	F0 41 10 42 12 40 00 74 00 41 F7
If you didn't know what the checksum for this command was, you could
type the address and data bytes into the calculator:
	40 00 7F 00
When you press Enter, the checksum result of 41 will be displayed.
(Remember not to type in any of the header bytes [F0 41 10 42 12]).

After you have found your checksum, you can choose "Copy SysEx+CkSum"
from the Edit menu. This will copy the contents of the "Address and
Data bytes" box and the "Checksum" box to the clipboard, so you can
easily paste it into another program, such as your favorite sequencer,
without having to retype it. Remember, however, you will need to add
the correct header bytes to the beginning, and an F7 to the end of
the message.

At the bottom of the window are two boxes labeled "Hexadecimal" and
"Decimal". This is a convenient way to convert between the two number
formats while writing your message. To use it, type a number in
hexadecimal into the "Hexadecimal" box and press Enter. The
decimal equivalent will be shown in the "Decimal" box. Follow the
same procedure in reverse to convert from decimal to hexadecimal.

For More Information
--------------------
To learn more about using System Exclusive messages, look in the back
of your instrument's Owners Manual, or check with your music dealer
or bookstore for more sources of information. An excellent source is
"The Next MIDI Book" from Alexander Publishing, which has an extensive
section on creating and using SysEx messages (you can order this book
directly from Roland by calling 323-685-5141 ext. 2289 - order model
"APB-NEXT-MIDI").
