Updating the VS-880 Operating System from Standard MIDI Files

Use the following procedure to update the VS-880 to version
3.20A or B. The updated software is provided as eight
Standard MIDI Files, on a DOS or Macintosh formatted disk.

The tools required are:
*MIDI sequencer (software or hardware) that can load DOS or
 Macintosh Standard MIDI Files
*MIDI cable
*VS-880
*VS-880 System Software update disk

Update Procedure
1) Connect the MIDI OUT port of the sequencer to the MIDI IN
   port of the VS-880.
2) Hold down CH EDIT button 7 and STATUS button 7 while powering
on the VS-880. The message "System Update?" will be displayed.
3) Press YES. The message "Waiting MIDI-EX" will be displayed.
4) Load the Standard MIDI Files into your sequencer.
5) Play all Standard MIDI Files: "VS-880-1.mid" through
   "VS-880-8.mid" in sequential order.
6) After all SMF's have been played into the VS-880, the message
"Update SysPRG?" will be displayed. Press YES.
7) The message "Please Reboot OK" will be displayed. The system
software of the VS-880 has now been updated.
8) Restart the VS-880 (power off and then on again). The new
system version will be displayed in the lower left corner of
the display as the unit is booting up.

* NOTE: Hardware sequencers are normally more reliable for
transferring system exclusive MIDI data. We have tested these
files with the following computer-based MIDI sequencing programs;
Vision (Opcode), Performer (MOTU), Cubase (Steinberg/Jones), and
Logic (Emagic). We were successful in updating the VS-1680. Some
sequencers do not send system exclusive messages that are embedded
in a Standard MIDI File properly. These programs will not work for
updating the operating system of the VS-1680. Several Manufacturers
have demo versions of their sequencer available on the internet
that will work for this use. If you have problems with the update
procedure check your MIDI/interface setup.

**New Features
Version 3.1 adds the ability to back up song data to CD-R (using
the option Roland VS-CDR CD Writer. Please view the file
"VS88031.pdf" for instructions on using the CD backup feature.

Version 3.104 adds the ability to Punch In/Out while in
MTC Slave mode.

Version 3.20A adds compatibility for the new Roland VS-CDRII CD-writer.
Please note that this upgrade also removes the DAT backup feature as
well as the ability to dump Digital Audio through the SCSI port.

Version 3.20B is functionally the same as version 3.104.
