Shining Technology FWIDE FireWire to IDE/Atapi Adapter Information This document contains information pertaining to installation and use of your FWIDE FireWire to IDE/Atapi Adapter under Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. DRIVER INSTALLATION Before using your FWIDE Adapter, you must first install drivers for it using the Shining Technology AutoInstaller software provided on this CD-ROM. The easiest procedure is to install drivers using the AutoInstaller BEFORE attaching your new hardware. The AutoInstaller will automatically detect which operating system you are using, and install appropriate device drivers and system upgrades. The AutoInstaller will also fix many system configuration problems, such as removing old or incompatible drivers for the device. Using the AutoInstaller to install drivers for your new Shining Technology hardware is easy to do. Simply insert the Shining CD into any CD drive, and the splash screen should appear. From there, click on "Install/Uninstall Drivers" to begin the installation. If the splash screen does not appear, simply double-click on the CD-ROM device within "My Computer" to start it. On Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems, this should be done from an account that has "administrator" privileges, or the AutoInstaller be unable to install drivers. Select the "FWIDE" device from the list of supported devices, and click on "Next" to proceed. Then click on "Install" to begin the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Once the installation begins, the "spinning red dots" image indicates that installation is in progress. Depending on your system's speed and other hardware, installation may take several minutes; please be patient. Once the driver installation is completed, the AutoInstaller may ask you to reboot the computer, or authorize it to perform a necessary operating system upgrade. Simply select "Reboot Now" or "Begin" to continue the process. Once the AutoInstaller finishes, your system is ready to use your new device. Drivers can also be uninstalled using the AutoInstaller. Once you have started the AutoInstaller and selected your hardware device, simply choose "Uninstall" to remove the drivers from your system. The uninstallation process tries to restores your system to the state it had before driver installation, to the extent possible, including deletion of both files and registry entries. CONNECTING YOUR NEW FWIDE Using your new FWIDE is simple. Just use the following list of steps to connect your device to the computer: 1) The FWIDE adapter will support one IDE or ATAPI device. Make sure that the "master/slave" jumpers of the device are set correctly, according to the manufacture's directions. Generally, the device should be set to be "neutral", if this is an option; otherwise, select the "master" configuration. 2) Connect the IDE cable between the device you wish to use and the FWIDE adapter. Make sure that this cable is in good condition, and is connected properly. 3) Connect the power adapter to the device, and plug it in. 4) Last, insert the FireWire/1394 connector into a compatible computer port to begin use. The first time your hardware is used in a particular port on the computer, additional installation messages may appear; please wait for these to disappear before attempting to use the device. Windows 2000 and Windows Me may ask you to certify that you wish to use the Shining drivers for this device, or report that a reboot is necessary; simply click on "OK" to proceed. USING YOUR NEW FWIDE Devices connected via a FWIDE adapter can be used just like any other device. For hard drives, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, and other disk-based storage devices, existing partitions on the media will appear within My Computer, and may be used like standard storage partitions. We recommend using the Shining Technology Utilities (also provided on this CD-ROM) for partitioning and formatting tasks; see the accompanying documentation for addition information. SPECIAL DEVICE ISSUES There are certain minor limitations when using some devices; these are outlined below. LS-120 devices will appear in "My Computer" with a floppy icon. However, these devices otherwise work normally. ZIP drives that are ATAPI-based will work with a FWIDE adapter; other ZIP devices will not. DISCONNECTING YOUR FWIDE ADAPTER It is very important that you DO NOT DISCONNECT THE DEVICE OR THE SHINING ADAPTER WHILE THE DEVICE IS IN USE! Data loss could occur in such circumstances. Also, for some devices, powering down the device while leaving media in the drive may cause damage to the drive or media. Please eject all removable media from a device before disconnecting the adapter or shutting off the computer. The correct method for disconnecting the Shining adapter depends on the operating system your are using: Windows 2000: These systems provide a "remove device" icon within the Start Bar (usually located in the lower right corner of the screen). This can be used to ask the system to stop the device; consult your operating system Help for further details. Windows 98, Windows Me: The operating system provides no convenient method to stop the device. Please make sure that no programs are using the device, and that any removable media has been ejected, and then simply detach the FWIDE adapter from the system. TROUBLESHOOTING If your are having difficulties with your New Hardware Device, please try the following suggestions: 1) Make sure you have run the Shining AutoInstaller to install drivers for the device, as described in the "DRIVER INSTALLATION" section. 2) Make sure you have attached the device to the computer correctly, as described in "CONNECTING YOUR HARDWARE DEVICE". 3) Try reinstalling the drivers, using the same procedure as that described in the "DRIVER INSTALLATION" section. 4) Visit www.shining.com, to look for updated drivers for your Shining adapter. 5) Technically sophisticated users may find the Frequently Asked Questions list, located on this CD-ROM with path \drivers\FWIDE\fwidefaq.txt helpful in addressing specific issues. After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
