The MAXDIAG.EXE program is specifically designed for and is to be used ONLY with Maxtor 
IDE/AT hard drives. This program will perform non-destructive defect surface scans and 
if need be, low-level format the hard drive and restore the media to it's original 
factory format. The use of this software with other manufacturer's products is not 
authorized, the use of this application on other manufacturer's products may produce 
results that render the drive unusable. Use of this application with other 
manufacturer's products is entirely at the user's own risk.

! WARNING !: All data on the drive will be lost when using the Write Scan option of 
this utility. Maxtor recommends backing up critical data and/or removing any other 
hard drive(s) from the system before running this utility.

NOTE: The MAXDIAG.EXE utility is effective on all Maxtor 7000 series, CrystalMax, and 
DiamondMax IDE/EIDE hard drives greater than or equal to 500 MB. Contact Maxtor 
Technical Assistance (1-800-2MAXTOR option #1) for available low-level format 
utilities/diagnostics for older Maxtor products.

Purpose: The MAXDIAG.EXE utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write 
verifications on Maxtor hard drives, return the surface of the media to manufacturing 
specifications and format the hard drive as it was shipped from the factory.

MAXDIAG.EXE can be obtained from the following:

  * Maxtor Utilities Diskette (MUD)
  * Maxtor's World Wide Web Site. Direct address to the Web page containing the 
    MAXDIAG.EXE utility is:  http://www.maxtor.com/library/allfiles.html download
    the file named "MAXDIAG.EXE".

Extracting MAXDIAG.EXE
----------------------
This file is compressed, and self-extracting. Prior to extraction, Maxtor recommends 
that user's copy MAXDIAG.EXE to a formatted, DOS (5.0 or higher), Windows 95, or 
Windows 98 3.5" floppy diskette.

1. Insert the floppy disk containing MAXDIAG.EXE in the appropriate floppy disk drive 
   and establish operations at that drive's DOS prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type "MAXDIAG" and press the [Enter] key. At this point, two 
   files will be extracted to the floppy disk:
   * MAXDIAG.EXE - Maxtor's Diagnostic and Low Level Format Utility
   * MAXDIAG.TXT - Text file giving procedures to run MAXDIAG.EXE
     NOTE: MAXDIAG.TXT is this document.

Technicians Overview:
---------------------
The following is a brief synopsis for performing hard drive diagnostics via the 
MAXDIAG.EXE utility:
* Clean Boot the system to the "A:\>" prompt with a bootable DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 
  98 system diskette.
  NOTE: This application cannot be executed under any Windows (GUI) environment or the 
  DOS command prompt window. The system must be booted to the DOS command prompt!

* Insert the disk containing the downloaded file or the Maxtor Utilities Diskette.

* If using the Maxtor Utilities Diskette, type "cd diags" and press the [Enter] key. 
  After changing to the /diags directory (or if the file was downloaded), type 
  "MAXDIAG" and press the [Enter] key.

* Type "Y" to accept the conditions of the Maxtor Disclaimer.

* Press the "Up" or the "Down" Arrow keys to highlight a test. Press the [Enter] key to 
  run a specific test. Press the [Esc] key or the [F3] key to abort the execution of 
  the MAXDIAG.EXE utility.

* From the Main Menu, highlight "Select Drive" and press the [Enter] key. If the hard 
  drive is on the Primary IDE Interface Port, highlight Primary and press the [Enter] 
  key. If the hard drive is on the Secondary IDE Interface Port, highlight Secondary 
  and press the [Enter] key. If the hard drive is the Master on the selected IDE 
  Interface Port, highlight Master and press the [Enter] key. If the hard drive is the 
  Slave on the selected IDE Interface Port, highlight Slave and press the [Enter] key.

* Highlight "Quick Test" and press the [Enter] key. Highlight "Read Scan" and press the 
  [Enter] key. Highlight "Write Scan" and press the [Enter] key.
  ! WARNING !: All data on the drive will be lost when using the Write Scan option of 
  this utility. Maxtor recommends backing up critical data and/or removing any other 
  hard drive(s) from the system before running this utility.

* Press the [Esc] key (or press the [F3] key) to exit the MAXDIAG utility. This will 
  return the user to the operating system's command prompt.

Step by Step Procedure:
-----------------------
The following is Step by Step procedure for performing hard drive diagnostics via the 
MAXDIAG.EXE utility:
1.  Clean Boot the system to the "A:\>" prompt with a bootable DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 
    98 system diskette.
    NOTE: a Clean Boot is defined as booting to a system diskette that loads no software 
    drivers into memory.

2.  Insert the Maxtor Utility Diskette or the diskette containing the downloaded files 
    in the appropriate Floppy Disk Drive and establish operations at that drive's DOS 
    prompt. 

3.  If using the Maxtor Utilities Diskette, type "cd diags" and press the [Enter] key. 
    The DOS prompt will change to {drive}:\diags>.
    NOTE: Skip step 3 if using the extracted files downloaded from Maxtor's World Wide 
    Web Site. If the file was downloaded, type "MAXDIAG" and press the [Enter] key.

4.  Type "MAXDIAG" and press the [Enter] key. This will execute the diagnostic program 
    and display the Maxtor Disclaimer Screen.

5.  To accept the conditions of the Maxtor Disclaimer, type "Y" and press the [Enter] 
    key. Press any other key to abort the execution of the MAXDIAG utility.

6.  At this point, the Maxtor HDD Diagnostic 1.04 menu will appear on the screen. Press 
    the "Up Arrow" key or the "Down Arrow" key to highlight a test. Press the [Enter] 
    key to run a specific test. Press the [Esc] key or press the [F3] key to abort the 
    execution of the MAXDIAG utility.

7.  Highlight "Select Drive" and press the [Enter] key.
    * If the hard drive is on the Primary IDE Interface Port, highlight Primary and 
      press the [Enter] key. If the hard drive is on the Secondary IDE Interface Port, 
      highlight Secondary and press the [Enter] key.
    * If the hard drive is the Master on the selected IDE Interface Port, highlight 
      Master and press the [Enter] key. If the hard drive is the Slave on the selected 
      IDE Interface Port, highlight Slave and press the [Enter] key.

8.  Highlight the "Quick Test" option and press the [Enter] key. The "Quick Test" 
    performs a short evaluation of the drive to verify basic functionality. If the hard 
    drive passes the "Quick Test", proceed to the Step 9. If the hard drive fails the 
    "Quick Test", contact Maxtor Customer Service (1-800-2MAXTOR option #1) for warranty 
    replacement options.*

9.  Highlight the "Read Scan" test option and press the [Enter] key. The "Read Scan" 
    test performs a non-destructive read verify across the entire selected drive. If the 
    drive passes the "Read Scan" more than likely the hard drive is functioning normally. However, Maxtor suggests that users proceed to the Step 10 and perform the "Write Scan" test. If the hard drive fails the "Read Scan" contact Maxtor Customer Service (1-800-2MAXTOR option #1) for warranty replacement options.*
    ! WARNING !: All data will be lost when the "Write Scan" test is performed. Maxtor 
    recommends that users backup any/all critical data and removing other hard drives 
    before proceeding to Step 10.

10. Highlight the "Write Scan" test option and press the [Enter] key. The "Write Scan" 
    test performs a data-destructive, write across the entire selected drive. At this 
    point, a read warning screen will appear on the screen.

11. Type "YES" and press the [Enter] key to proceed with the "Write Scan" test.

12. If the hard drive passes the "Write Scan" test, the drive is returned to factory 
    specification. If the hard drive fails the "Write Scan" test, contact Maxtor 
    Customer Service (1-800-2MAXTOR option #1) for warranty replacement options.*

13. Press the [Esc] key or press the [F3] key to abort the execution of the MAXDIAG 
    utility. This will return back the system back to the DOS command prompt. The drive 
    is now ready to be prepared for use with an operating system. Partition and high 
    level format using the operating system.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
