What You Need

To flash your modem to the V.90 protocol, download the flasher file, and have your Diamond K56flex modem installed on your Windows 95 computer. If you have an external modem, turn it on.

How to Update Your Modem in Windows

There are 3 steps to upgrade your modem to V.90. The details of each step are listed in the sections below. If you find you need to flash back to K56flex, those instructions are at the end.
NOTE: If you use this flasher to flash your modem back to K56flex, it will flash it to the most recent version of K56flex firmware. The flasher will not restore the version of firmware that you had on your modem before you flashed to V.90.
1.	Download and open the flasher and driver file.
2.	Flash your modem with the V.90 flasher.
3.	Update your Modem in Windows.


Downloading and Opening the Flasher and Driver File

1.	Download the file.
2.	Double-click the file to extract the archive, and remember where you’ve placed the files. You’ll need to come back to this location 2 times.


Flashing Your Modem with V.90

1.	Exit any software that may be using your modem, for example, fax software or online software.
2.	Double-click the flasher file (.exe) you just extracted.
3.	If you know which COM port your modem is on, select it and write down the name of your modem as it is displayed next to the COM port display.
If you don’t know which COM port your modem is on, click Search and the flasher will find your modem. Write down the name of the modem as it is displayed next to the COM port display.
4.	Click the Flash V90 button.
You’ll see a thermometer showing progress as the flasher is updating your modem. You’ll be able to tell when the flasher is finished. You may see some cryptic-looking commands like ATFW or OK.
5.	Click Quit
NOTE: If this is the first time you’re flashing to V.90, continue with the next section, Updating Your Modem in Windows 95. 
If this is the second time you’re flashing to V.90,  and you’ve completed the following section, Updating Your Modem in Windows 95, stop here.


Updating Your Modem in Windows 95

It is important that you complete the following steps in the order in which they appear.
Removing Your Old Modem Drivers From Your Windows Directory
1.	Click Start, select Settings, Control Panel and double-click Modems.
2.	Click the Diagnostics tab.
Select the COM port which is associated with your modem.
Click the More Info... button.
3.	Locate the name of the modem and the identifier which is underneath the modem’s name. Write down the SUP#### number, for example, SUP2051.
You’re finished with Modems. Click OK in each window to return to the Control Panel. Leave the Control Panel open.
4.	Click Start, select Find, Files or Folders.
5.	Leave the Named field blank.
6.	In the Look in field, Browse to C:\Windows\Inf\Other. If you don't have a directory called Other, browse to C:\Windows\Inf.
NOTE: Step 8 assumes that when you installed Windows 95, you allowed the default name of your system directory to be Windows. If you changed the name of the directory, substitute that name in place of Windows  in Step 8.
7.	Click the Advanced tab.
8.	The Of type field should say All Files and Folders.
9.	In the Containing text field, type the SUP#### number you wrote down for your modem.
10.	Click the Find Now button, and Windows will find the files for your modem.
11.	Check the three-letter extensions of the file names. Delete the files that end in ".inf". You may have to widen the column to see the entire filename (put your cursor over the column divider at the top of the results table).
NOTE: You can double-check which files to delete by opening them and looking for references to a Diamond Modem. They may look a bit cryptic, but you’ll be able to understand some of it.
If your files don’t have the three-letter extension, 
•	open Windows Explorer (Start > Programs > Windows Explorer)
•	from the View menu select Options
•	click the View tab
•	make sure Show all files is selected
•	make sure that Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered is not selected
•	click OK
•	close Windows Explorer
•	click the Find Now button to update the display of the files that were located, you should see which ones have .inf after them now
12.	Close the Find window.
You’ve removed your modem’s drivers. Next remove your modem from the Control Panel. Continue with the next section.


Removing Your Modem From The Modems Control Panel

1.	From the Control Panel, double-click Modems.
2.	Select your modem name. If you have trouble finding your modem, select a name that’s similar to what you wrote down in Step 3 in ”Flashing Your Modem with V.90”.
3.	Click Remove, then Close.
You’ve removed the modem from the Control Panel. Next restart the computer so you can set up the updated modem with your operating system.


Rebooting Your Computer

1.	Close any applications you have open on your computer.
2.	Restart your computer. 
3.	When your computer states that new hardware has been found (or that it will update your devices) and that drivers are needed, locate the drivers you just downloaded (they’re in the same place the flasher is), and Windows 95 will complete the installation.


How to Tell if Your Modem Has Been Updated and Installed Correctly

These steps will show you how to make sure your modem has been correctly flashed with the V.90 firmware, and will show you how to ensure that your modem is working correctly with your operating system.
1.	Click Start, select Settings, Control Panel and double-click Modems.
2.	Click the Diagnostics tab.
3.	Select the COM port that’s associated with your modem.
Click the More Info... button.
You should see a list of commands that Windows 95 issued to your modem, and the modem’s responses.
Look at the first response to the ATi3 command. This shows the number of the version of firmware that’s on your modem. 
If the number starts with V2.0..., then you’ve correctly updated to V.90. 
If it begins with V.1.0..., you still have K56flex firmware.


Updating Applications You Use With Your Modem

After you’ve flashed your modem to V.90, you need to check the modem setup sections in the applications which use your modem, and tell them look for your "new" modem. Because Windows saw it as a "new" modem, so will any software you use with it.


Flashing Back to K56flex

If you find a reason to flash back to K56flex, follow the instructions below. When you flash back to K56flex, it is not necessary to follow the instructions in Updating Your Modem in Windows 95.
1.	Exit any software that may be using your modem, for example, fax software.
2.	Double-click the flasher.
3.	If you know which COM port your modem is on, select it.
If you don’t know which COM port your modem is on, click Search and the flasher will find your modem.
4.	Click the Flash K56 button.
You’ll see a thermometer showing progress as the flasher is updating your modem. You’ll be able to tell when the flasher is finished. You may see some cryptic-looking commands like ATFW or OK.
5.	Click Quit
There is nothing else you must do for your modem to function as a K56flex modem. Do not follow the instructions in Updating Your Modem in Windows 95.
