GigaNIX1000T Installation

The current driver is based on the Red Hat linux 2.2.12-20 build.
The installation can be performed completely manually, if that
is desirable. However by placing the module in the standard
modules directory path, and updating a module-info file, one
can use the configuration tools that Red Hat provides and
are available to the GNOME desktop environment.

Scripts are provided which presume the existence of the
module directories and files consistent with the 2.2.12-20 build.

Manual Installation.

0. Untaring the installation files.

Change directory to the linux directory of the CD-ROM.
Untar the archive file 'asante.taz' into a temporary directory
        with the following command:

[root@asante cdrom] cp asante-redhat-binary.tar.gz /tmp
[root@asante cdrom] cd tmp
[root@asante tmp] tar xzvf asante-redhat-binary.tar.gz

[root@asante tmp] cd /tmp/linux

1. Perform the following copy operations:

[root@asante tmp] cp boot/modules-info-asante /boot
[root@asante tmp] cp lib/modules/`uname -r`/net/asante.o
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/net/asante.o

2. Update the /boot/module-info file.

The file '/boot/module-info' file is symbolically linked to one of
several info files. Use 'ls -l' to determine which one is in use.

[root@asante tmp] cd /boot
[root@asante boot] ls -l

The response should be:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           21 Apr 29 12:53 module-info ->
module-info-2.2.12-20

Using a text editor, add the following lines to the drivers/net directory of
the file module-info-2.2.12-20:

asante
	eth
	"Asante GigaNIX1000T Linux driver"

and save the file

3. Use GNOME environment configuration tools.

Under the 'System Menus' menu list select the 'System' menu item.
Under the 'System' menu item, select the 'Control Panel' item.

4. Control Panel Choices.

4a. Configure module for 'eth' module type.
Under the selection 'Kernel Daemon Configuration', select the 'add' item.
This selection will ask the type of module, select the 'eth' option.
The next dialogue will present 2 options, Module type and Which Module.
Under the 'Which module' item, select the 'asante' option.

4b. Configure IP address for 'eth' type.

The procedure in step 4a resulted in an assignment of 'ethX' for
the asante module. X ranges from 0 thru 9.

Using for example, 'eth0' and selecting the 'Network Configurator' item
from the Control Panels window, click on the 'Interfaces' option.

Click on the line containing the interface 'eth0', and enter the appropriate
IP number, mask, and related configuration data.

Save the configuration and quit the configurator.

5. Restart the system.

Should the system fail to boot, at the LILO boot prompt, enter:

linux 1

To enter linux in single user mode to back out changes to perform maintanence
operations to recover the system.
