2.0 General Notice regarding the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option
Diskette
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette is a "system-bootable"
diskette. That is to say, the user can insert the diskette in the
computer's A: drive and boot the system from the diskette. The
diskette is a DOS 7.0 system diskette.
The reason for this feature is to facilitate installation and testing
of the adapter as described in the "Installation and Testing Instructions"
document shipped with this product.
The Option diskette contains an executable file for a program called
"CONFIG". This program assists the user with the installation, testing
and configuration of the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet.
NOTE that the CONFIG program is large in size and requires that sufficient
system RAM be available to execute. Hence, if you are running a large
application or several applications and attempt to run the CONFIG program,
you may receive an error message. Depending on your operating system, you
will see displayed a message such as
"> cannot execute a:\config.exe"
or "> program too big to execute"
or "> the system cannot complete the process"
These errors are most likely indicating that there is not enough
space in system memory to run the CONFIG program.
It is recommended that if CONFIG is used, no other memory-consuming
applications are active.
3.0 Attention OS/2 Users!
---------------------------
The CONFIG program is a DOS-only executable program. It will not run
under OS/2. Hence, OS/2 users will either boot their system from the
IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette when they wish to execute
the CONFIG program or they can run CONFIG under a DOS shell.
[OS/2 users: see the special note under the section entitled
"Installation of Multiple Adapters" for more information.]
4.0 Notice about the MESSAGE.MSG file
---------------------------------------
The file named "MESSAGE.MSG" in the root directory of the IBM LAN
Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette is used by the CONFIG program
for program messages. This file must be located in the same directory as
CONFIG.EXE when the CONFIG program is used.
If CONFIG is unable to locate the MESSAGE.MSG file, an error message will
be displayed and CONFIG will abort execution.
5.0 Notice about Adapter and Cable installation and test
----------------------------------------------------------
The IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Installation and Testing Instructions
provide the user with the recommended procedure for installing the
adapter in a computer, connecting the adapter to the network using the
desired media interface and configuring the software selectable options
of the adapter. The CONFIG program checks that the adapter is
functionally sound and tests the connection to the network. If there
is any problem with the card or the connection, the user will be made
aware of it via a failure in the "Diagnostics" section of CONFIG.
If the user experiences difficulties with the IBM LAN Adapter for
Ethernet subsequent to the initial installation of the adapter, he should
run diagnostics on the adapter using the CONFIG program.
6.0 Notice about the use of Shared Memory mode and the Boot PROM
------------------------------------------------------------------
The IBM LAN Adapter allows the user to configure the architecture of the
adapter such that it will operate in "Shared Memory" mode.
This mode of operation will affect the configuration of the computer's
system memory.
This notice is to alert the user that the memory space selected for the
IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet's Shared Memory mode must not conflict
with that of any other adapter installed in the workstation or with
an address that is used by an expanded-memory manager.
If such a conflict occurs, the computer may "hang" (i.e., not complete
its power-up routine) when it is re-booted. Should this happen, the user
must insert the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette in the computers
A: drive and re-boot the computer (either by cycling the power or pressing
the CTL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously). The user can then reconfigure
the adapter and/or system memory to correct the conflict.
Alternatively, the adapter causing the hang can be moved to another
computer where the hang does not occur. Then, use the CONFIG program
to disable to IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet.
The same problem can occur when using the Boot PROM on the IBM LAN
Adapter for Ethernet.
[See the section in this document entitled "Use of the Boot PROM.]
The Boot PROM, when activated, will also affect the computer's system
memory configuration. Again, the user must make certain that the memory
space selected for the Boot PROM does not conflict with that of any
other adapter installed in the workstation or with an address that is used
by an expanded-memory manager.
If such a conflict does occur, the computer may hang. Use the instructions
above to correct this situation.
7.0 Attention IBM PC AT Computer users

9.0 Installation notes for SCO/UNIX
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the Novell NE2000 Compatible driver for installation with SCO/UNIX.
10.0 Notice about using Packet Drivers
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest packet drivers from CRYNWARE are maintained at the Internet
anonymous FTP site at
ftp://ftp.coast.net/simtel/msdos/pktdrvr.
There is files called pktd11.zip, pktd11a.zip, pktd11b.zip, and pktd11c.zip
that contains the packet drivers. Use the Novell NE2000 compatible drivers
with the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet.
11.0 Making the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet NE2000-compatible
when using the NE2000 device drivers
--------------------------------------------------------------
When using Client/Server NE2000 device drivers with the LAN Adapter for
Ethernet you must configure the adapter as a NE2000-compatible adapter.
Note: When using the Microsoft NE2000 Compatible drivers with
Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows NT it is
not required to configure the adapter as a
NE2000-compatible adapter, therefore you can disregard
this procedure.
This procedure describes how to make any of the three
IBM LAN Adapters for Ethernet (IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet -
(IBM p/n 48G7169, IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet CX - IBM p/n
60G0615, or the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet TP - IBM p/n 60G0605)
into an NE2000-compatible adapter.
In this mode, the IBM LAN Adapters for Ethernet are fully
NE2000-compatible, as certified by Novell testing.
To start....the assumptions
---------------------------
- You have some type of IBM-compatible PC with DOS 3.3 or better,
Windows 3.x or OS/2 2.x loaded on it and working.
- You have one of the IBM LAN Adapters for Ethernet and you have
installed it in a slot in the PC.
- If you have previously configured the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet
as indicated in the Installation and Testing Instructions that came
with the adapter, skip the next section and go the section called
"Adapter already configured".
- If you have not yet configured the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet
then read the next section called "Adapter not configured".
Adapter not configured
----------------------
- If your machine is not on, turn it on now. If it is on, continue.
- Once your operating system has come up,
insert the IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet Option Diskette in
your PC's A: drive.
(If you are running OS/2 you will need to jump to a DOS shell.
If you are running Windows, you will need to jump to an MS-DOS shell.)
- From the DOS prompt, enter "a:\config"
- You will be presented the Main Menu of the Configuration program
- As you have a new, unconfigured adapter, you will select
"Configure new adapter". The cursor will already be highlighting
this selection, so just press "enter".
- You will be presented with a small box. From this box, use
the arrow keys to highlight the selection "Configure new
adapter manually" and press "enter".
- You will be presented with a menu that allows you to select
the configuration of the adapter. The first line of this
menu is called "Novell Configuration". This item
should already be highlighted. Use the "Tab" key to
move through the different selections under this item.
You will see "None" and "Option 0" through "Option 11"
(you might see some options skipped; this is because another
resource in your PC is already using that option's I/O address
and/or interrupt and the Configuration program will not let you
create a conflict between resources).
Each Novell Configuration Option is a different combination of I/O
addresses and Interrupts, along with the "Adapter Architecture"
selection of "Programmed I/O". Each of the options is a valid,
Novell configuration that makes the adapter NE2000-compatible.
- When you have decided upon an option - for example, I/O address
= 300, Interrupt = 3 - you then use the arrow keys to move
the highlight bar to the selection called "Physical Media".
Use the tab keys to select the desired media.
- To save the configuration, move the highlight bar to the selection
called "Save Configuration".
When you have highlighted this selection, press the "enter"
key. The adapter's configuration will be stored in an EEPROM on the
adapter and on a file on your option diskette.
- Using the arrow keys, move the highlight bar to the selection
"Return to previous menu" and press "enter".
- You will then be returned to the Main Menu of the Configuration
program. Move the highlight bar to the selection "Quit Config"
and press "enter". Press "x" to confirm your desire
to exit.
- And you are done!
The adapter is now configured as an NE2000-compatible adapter.
You can use any NE2000-type driver with the adapter.
Adapter already configured
--------------------------
- If your machine is not on, turn it on now.
- Using the arrow keys, move the highlight bar to the selection
"Display/Change Adapter Configuration: and press "enter".
- You will be presented with a small box that allows you
to select a specific IBM LAN Adapter for Ethernet
installed in your machine.
If you only have one adapter installed, just press "enter".
If you have more than one adapter installed, use the "Tab"
key to select the I/O Port address of the adapter you wish to
re-configure and then press "enter".
- You will then be presented with a menu showing all of the
configuration items of the adapter. You will see two column
beside each configuration item. The left column indicates
the "current" setting of the item. The right column
is where you will see any changes you make in a configuration
item's setting.
- If the "Adapter Architecture" item is already set to
"I/O Port", then skip to the next step. However...
If the "Adapter Architecture" item is set to
"Shared Memory", move the highlight bar to this item
(using the arrow keys) and use the "Tab" key to
change the architecture to "I/O Port".
- Next, use the arrow keys to move the highlight bar to the
selection "Novell Configuration".
Use the "Tab" key to move through the different selections under
this item.
