1.0 Windows 95 Installation

PLEASE NOTE: You must be using Windows 95 OSR-2 (or higher) to install
and use the Jack of Spades Trumpcard. Windows 95 OSR-2 is also known
as Windows 95B and Windows 95 build 1111. Users of earlier versions
          of Windows 95 (i.e. "Golden", Windows 95A, Windows 95 build 950)
cannot use CardBus PC Cards like the Jack of Spades due to operating
          system restrictions.

When the Jack of Spades PC Card is inserted into a Cardbus slot for the
first time, Windows 95 OSR2 will automatically detect the Jack of Spades PC
Card as a "PCI Ethernet Controller" and will attempt to locate the necessary
software. First, the 'Update Device Driver Wizard' window will open.

Insert the Jack of Spades Windows 95 Driver Disk into the floppy disk
drive of your computer and click 'Next'.

Windows 95 OSR2 will then identify the "PCI Ethernet Device" as the
"Ositech JoS CardBus 10/100 Ethernet" device and will install it's driver.
Follow any dialog instructions. You will need your Windows 95 installation
files at this time. At the prompt, restart your computer, if asked to do so.

Next, Windows 95 OSR2 will detect a "PCI Serial Controller" and will
attempt to find a driver for it. Make sure that the "Jack of Spades Windows
95 Driver Disk" is inserted into the floppy disk drive of your computer and
then click 'Next'. Windows will find the "Ositech JoS Bus" device and install
it's driver. Follow any dialog instructions. At the prompt, restart your
computer, if asked to do so.

Next, Windows 95 OSR2 will detect an "Ositech Serial Controller" and
will attempt to find a driver for it. Make sure that the Jack of Spades
Windows 95 Driver Disk is inserted into the floppy disk drive of your computer
and then click 'Next'. Windows will find the "Ositech JoS 56K DPI Modem"
device and will install it's driver along with the Ositech Trumpcard PILOT
software. Restart your computer, if asked to do so. The installation
procedure is now complete.

Note - If you insert the Jack of Spades PC Card into a CardBus slot and
no window opens, PC Card support is most likely disabled. To
enable PC Card support, open the 'PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties'
window from the Control Panel and follow the PC Card (PCMCIA)
            wizard.

Note - If during the installation process a message reports that a file
cannot be found on the Ositech disk, ensure the path is A:\ and
            click OK.

Note - If, after the Jack of Spades has been installed, the JoS is
inserted into a CardBus slot other than that in which it was
initially installed from, Windows will redetect the Jack of
Spades. This is normal for CardBus devices. You will need to
re-install the card at this and may need access to your JoS
            drivers disks.

2.0 Windows 98 Installation

When the Jack of Spades PC Card is inserted into a Cardbus slot for the
first time, Windows 98 will automatically detect the Jack of Spades as a "PCI
Ethernet Controller" and will attempt to locate the necessary software for it.
First the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' window opens.

Insert the Jack of Spades Windows 98/NT disk into the floppy disk drive of
your computer and click 'Next'.

Windows 98 will then identify the "PCI Ethernet Device" as the "Ositech
JoS CardBus 10/100 Ethernet" device and will install it's driver. Follow any
dialog instructions. At the prompt, restart your computer, if asked to do so.

Next, Windows 98 will detect a "PCI Serial Controller" and will attempt
to find the driver for it. Make sure that the Jack of Spades Windows 98/NT
Driver Disk is inserted into the floppy disk drive of your computer and then
click 'Next'. Windows will identify the "PCI Serial Controller" as the
"Ositech JoS 56K DPI Modem" device and will install it's driver along with
Ositech's Trumpcard PILOT software. At the prompt, restart your computer, if
asked to do so. The installation procedure is now complete.

Note - If you insert the Jack of Spades PC Card into a CardBus slot and
no window opens, PC Card support is most likely disabled. To
enable PC Card support, open the PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties
window from the Control Panel and follow the PC Card (PCMCIA)
            wizard.

                              ** ** ** ** **

3.0 Installation Under Windows NT 4.0

In order to install the JoS CardBus PC Card under Windows NT 4.0 you
should install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 if it is available from your
notebook vendor. It is highly recommended that the latest service packs be
installed as well as the latest notebook BIOS be installed on your notebook.

Now open Windows NT's Control Panel and run the Network applet. If
Windows NT networking is not installed, you will be prompted to install any
required components at this time. After this has been done, it will be
possible to install the Jack of Spades network adapter.

Click on the Adapters tab, and press the "Add" button. Windows NT will
bring up a list of installable adapters. Press the "Have Disk" button and
enter the location of the files as A:\ (make sure that the Windows 98/NT
Driver Disk is in the floppy drive). Windows NT will search the diskette and
provide a list of installable adapters. Choose the "Ositech Jack Of Spades
Trumpcard" and click on "OK".

Windows NT will copy over the required files and then display a dialog box
where you can select resources to be assigned to the JoS. After making your
choices (Ositech suggests keeping the defaults), click the "OK" button. Your
JoS adapter has now been added to the list of installed network adapters.

     Now re-start your computer.

Once you have re-booted your computer, you can install the JoS modem
device. To install the JoS modem, you will need to use the Control Panel's
Modem tool to detect the newly installed JoS modem. The modem INF is located
on the Windows 98/NT Driver Disk if Windows detects a "Standard Modem".

3.1 Installation with SystemSoft's CardWizard for NT

If you have SystemSoft's CardWizard for Windows NT4.0 installed, it must
be version 4.00.07 to properly work with the JoS. The JoS modem will not
function with CardWizard v4.10. Ositech is working with SystemSoft to correct
this issue. Please visit the Ositech website for driver updates.

With CardWizard installed, please run the CRDWIZNT.BAT file from the
Windows 98/NT driver disk, before inserting the JoS into the notebook.

After performing the above command, simply insert the JoS adapter card
into the notebook and the CardWizard software will install the JoS
automatically.

For the modem to function properly you should ensure that the IRQ used
by the network is the SAME as the interrupt used by the Ositech serial driver.

3.2 Installation with Phoenix CardExecutive (aka SofTex)

If you have Phoenix CardExecutive for Windows NT4.0 installed, it must
be version 2.18 or later to properly work with the JoS. The JoS will not
function correctly CardExecutive version earlier than v2.18.

With CardExecutive installed, simply insert the JoS into an available
CardBus slot. A dialog will appear which will reccommend that you install the
drivers provided by the card manufacturer. Please ensure that the JoS Windows
98/NT Driver Disk is present in the floppy drive and then click 'OK'.

CardExecutive will display a choice of card to install, please select the
"Ositech Jack of Spades Trumpcard". Once you have selected the JoS, all
required files will be copied over. A dialog will appear allowing you to select
the Media Type to use for the JoS, please choose the default.

Once the JoS network is installed, you will need to re-boot to install the
JoS modem. After rebooting, open the Control Panel/Modems tools and allow
Windows NT to detect any newly installed modems. If Windows NT detects a
"Standard Modem", please direct Windows to the Windows 98/NT Driver Disk and
choose the "Ositech JoS 56K DPI Modem". With the installation of the modem,
the Ositech Trumpcard PILOT will also be installed.

Please note that after installing the JoS modem and rebooting, an error
message will appear stating that "Cannot get handle from SERIAL driver".
Please go to Control Panel and open "Add/Remove Programs" and remove the
"Ositech CardBus DPI Assistant". The DPI Assistant will not work with Phoenix
CardExecutive.

4.0 DOS ODI and NDIS2 Drivers

Network support under DOS is provided by standard ODI and NDIS2 drivers.
For these drivers, the Ositech DOS CardBus Enabler, CBENABLE.EXE, must be run
before the driver is loaded.

4.1 The Ositech DOS CardBus Enabler

To run the CBENABLE.EXE file, just type CBENABLE.EXE at the DOS prompt.
Ositech suggests running CBENABLE.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, if CardBus
support is required often under DOS.

Please note that CBENABLE.EXE will not function if any Card and Socket
Services are present. Further, please note that CBENABLE.EXE does not support
hotswapping nor will it work if a DOS memory manager (i.e. EMM386.EXE) is
installed. It may be possible to load CBENABLE and then load a DOS memory
manager (to run Windows 3.x), however this is not a supported configuration.

CBENABLE will only enable Ositech CardBus products. CBENABLE should work
with the internal default resource assignments on most notebooks, however if
you need to specify specific resources, you may do so using command line
switches. Please type CBENABLE /? at the command line for a listing of all
available parameters.

To view all possible command line parameters associated with the CBENABLE.EXE
program, please issue the CBENABLE /? command. This will list all switches
needed to specify PC Card socket, I/O, IRQ, and memory resources. In most
cases these switches will not be required, and the defaults used will function.

Both the DOS ODI and NDIS2 drivers will communicate with CBENABLE for
assigned resources, so if any special resources need to be assigned, please
assigned them using the CBENABLE command line switches and not using the
standard NET.CFG (for the ODI driver) or PROTOCOL.INI (for the NDIS2 driver)
keywords. These keywords will be ignored by the drivers.

CBENABLE.EXE is located in the A:\DOS\ODI and A:\DOS\NDIS2 directories on
the Windows 95 Driver Disk.

     4.2 The ODI Driver

Ositech supplies a 16-bit ODI driver (OTCETHCB.COM) for use with the JoS
and networking enviroments which use the ODI standard. Ositech has also
supplied a minimal set of the Novell VLMs. You must use these VLMs or a later
version. Earlier versions of VLMs (and NETX.EXE) will not work with the
supplied ODI driver.

To use the ODI driver, create an empty directory on your computer (eg.
C:\NET) and copy all the files in the A:\DOS\ODI directory (from the Windows
95 Driver Disk) to this newly created directory.

To load the ODI driver modify the sample NET.CFG file as required for your
networking environment and then load these files in this order:

          LSL.COM
          OTCETHCB.COM
          IPXODI.COM
          VLM.EXE

Remember that CBENABLE.EXE must be run before loading the ODI driver.
Please further note that resources for the JoS are assigned using the CBENABLE
program (please see section 4.1), and not by any keywords in the NET.CFG file.

     4.3 The NDIS2 Driver

For the NDIS2 driver, an OEMSETUP.INF file is provided which will allow
installation of the NDIS2 driver using the Microsoft Workgroups Connection
installation (will also work under Windows 3.x / Windows for Workgroups 3.xx).
Ositech also provides a PROTOCOL.INI stub file which will allow installation
of the NDIS2 driver under other environments which support the NDIS2 driver
specification.

When installing the NDIS2 driver, proceed with the installation of the
network client and when prompted by the installation for an adapter or driver,
point the installation routine to the A:\DOS\NDIS2 directory on the Windows 95
Driver Disk.

Please note that the OTCETH.DOS driver (the NDIS2 driver) will not load
if the CBENABLE.EXE enabler has not been loaded. Further, the resources for
the JoS are assigned by CBENABLE and not by using any keywords in the
PROTOCOL.INI file. Follow the instructions detailed in section 4.1 (above)
for more information.

5.0 Possible Issues That May Be Encountered

Based on exposure with various notebooks and Card & Socket Services,
Ositech has compiled a list of possible issues that may be encountered
during the use of the Jack of Spades.

A) If the Windows 98 driver disk is used to install the JoS under the Windows 95
operating system, the resources for the devices will not be re-balanced. This is
a known, Microsoft issue with all versions of Windows 95 and has been documented
by Microsoft under their Knowledge Base Article #Q184191. This KB Article can
be found at http://support.microsoft.com/

Other Microsoft KB Articles which should be reviewed include the following:

Q159005 CardBus PCMCIA Controller Disabled After Second Boot
Q159349 Resume On Ring Not Implemented for PC Card Modems

Q184191 Inserted CardBus PCMCIA Adapter Not Rebalanced Properly
Q185073 CardBus Controller Displays Error Code 29 on IBM ThinkPad

B) When SystemSoft's CardSoft Card and Socket Service has been installed under
Windows 95/98, the CardSoft drivers must be commented (REM'ed) from the CONFIG.SYS
before attempting to install the JoS. If this is not done, the JoS may not be
installed correctly. The files to be commented will be be loaded from the
C:\CARDWIZ (or similar) directory. Please see your documentation for details
on which files are loaded by SystemSoft.

C) Windows NT 4.0 users who have Phoenix CardExecutive (aka SofTex PC Card
Controller) installed will not be able to use the Ositech DPI Assistant. An
error message is displayed at boot-up after installing the JoS modem. The
error message can be ignored or, to avoid this inconveinence, use the
"Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel to remove the "Ositech CardBus
DPI Assistant".

D) Windows NT 4.0 users who have Award CardWare installed will not be able
to install the JoS. The CardWare software must be completely removed before
installation of the JoS can be attempted. CardWare will be supported in a
later driver release, please visit the Ositech Website at
http://www.ositech.com for the more details. The Card Executive software can
be removed using the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel.

E) Ositech has received reports of the JoS not functioning when used in
CardBus slots located on docking stations. This issue has not yet been
verified by Ositech, however it is something to be aware of. If you have
problems getting the JoS to function in a docking station, remove your
notebook from the station and try to install the JoS in the notebook's
slots.

F) Users have reported that after installing the JoS, they have had to re-boot
their notebook twice before the JoS is enabled. This has not been repeatable,
so this may or may not be an issue. Ositech does recommend that the notebook
be completely shutdown (i.e cold re-boot), not just re-started (i.e. warm
re-boot), after installation of the JoS.

G) Previously, no modem audio was heard through the notebook speakers when
using the JoS modem. In this release of the JoS drivers, Ositech has attempted
to create a software work-around for this hardware/OS limitation. Modem audio
should now be enabled on most notebook computers. If you do not hear any modem
audio, please send an e-mail to Ositech Technical Support detailing your
notebook computer's make and model, and the issue will be investigated. More
notebooks will be supported, as feedback is received. Visit the Ositech website
for updated drivers.

H) Some notebooks need their BIOS to be adjusted to enable proper CardBus
support (i.e. some Toshiba notebooks). It is also recommended that users check
with their notebook vendor about later BIOS upgrades if they encounter problems
with CardBus (i.e. IBM ThinkPads).

I) Applications (i.e. AOL) that require COM1-COM4 will have "issues" under
Windows 9x. The JoS does not use a standard COM port address since, as a PCI
device, it needs 256 I/O ports, while a standard UART only uses 8 I/O ports.
Ositech has a utility called COMSLCT.EXE which will allow you to change the COM
port which Windows assigned to the JoS modem. The COMSLCT.EXE program is found
in the A:\UTILS directory on this disk. Just run the program and select the
JoS modem from the drop down list, and select the COM port to assign to it.

J) Under Windows NT, applications or packages that replace the SERIAL.SYS will
cause problems for the JoS modem. The modem will not be enabled and you will
not be able to talk to the serial port.

K) If using SystemSoft's CardWizard Card and Socket Service with Windows NT 4.0,
please ensure that it is CardWizard v4.00.07. There is a known issue with
v4.10 of the CardWizard software and the JoS. If you are using CardWizard v4.10,
the JoS modem will not function. Ositech is working with SystemSoft to resolve
this problem.

L) CardBus cards will be redetected when inserted into a different slot, when
using Windows 95 or Windows 98. This is a result of the hardware enumeration
process of Windows 95/98.

M) Under Windows 95, if an Ositech Seven of Spades has already been installed,
then the network device of the Jack of Spades will be detected as a Seven of
Spades network adapter. This is an issue of how Windows 95 OSR2.x detects PCI
hardware and has been fixed under Windows 98.

N) If a fully compliant DOS CardBus card and socket service is installed, it
may enable the JoS (allowing the CBENABLE requirement to be bypassed), however
Ositech has not come across a true CardBus enabler in a DOS card and socket
service. If a DOS card and socket service is installed, it will most likely
need to be removed, as the CBENABLE program needs to be used to enable the JoS
under DOS.

O) After installing the JoS under Windows NT4.0 running Phoenix CardExecutive
(or Softex Card and Socket Services), it has been observed that a hot-insertion
of the JoS into the notebook after it has been stsrted without a JoS installed
may cause a PAGE_FAULT_INNON_PAGED_AREA (and NT blue screens). Ositech has been
able to reproduce this issue, and it appears to be a bug with the Card and Socket
service. Ositech has advised the vendor of this issue, and is awaiting a
response. Hot-swapping of the card (if the card was present in the notebook
during boot-up) is not affected by this issue.

P) When attempting to use the Ositech Seven of Spades or Jack of Spades CardBus
cards under DOS or Windows NT 4.0 in a Toshiba Tecra 8000, the "USB Legacy
Emulation" setting in the 8000's BIOS must be set to "Disabled". If this is not
done, the notebook will likely lock-up on boot if the card is present (WinNT4.) or
the network driver will "hang" (DOS). It is recommended that the BIOS version of
Toshiba Tecra 8000 be version 8.00 or later.
