  1. Introduction
  ---------------

This section is an introduction of the NX32PCI Ethernet card series. It provides an overview of the adapters, a brief description of the features, and information on the LED indicators.

  1.1 Overview

The NX32PCI Ethernet adapter card complies with PCI local bus
specifications. The card provides installation flexibility with
its ability to connect on PCI system.

The card, which can be used with the PCI system,	includes the
       following model:

        BNC/UTP

This model allows connection to a thin coaxial cable or
10BASE-T twisted-pair segment through its BNC and RJ-45 ports,
respectively. Only one port, however, may be used at a time.

  1.2 Features

The NX32PCI Ethernet card complies with the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards and uses VLSI components for enhanced reliability. The following are just a few of the series' distinctive features.

       Easy installation

The card complies with PCI specifications, thus configuration
on PCI systems is handled entirely by the system with no user
        intervention.

Setup/diagnostic program and LEDs. The series comes with a
setup/diagnostic program that tests all adapter functions to verify correct operation of the card. The two LED indicators on the adapter report network activity.

Support for remote boot function. The series can be used on PCs or
diskless workstations for remote booting on the network. In order
to use the remote boot function, however, a remote boot ROM
(purchased separately) must be installed on the card.

Runs a wide variety of networking software. The series can be used
with all popular networking software. The table below lists the
        supported software:

        NDIS driver
Novell NetWare 3.x and 4.x ODI driver
        MS LAN Manager
        Packet driver
        Win/TCP Pathway Access for DOS
        FTP PC/TCP
        IBM PC LAN Support Program
        SUN PC-NFS
        IBM LAN Server
        3COM 3+Share
        DEC PathWorks
        Banyan VINES
        Windows for Workgroups
        3COM 3+Open
        Windows NT
        Windows 95
        Windows NT Advanced Server
        SCO UNIX

  1.3 LED Indicators

The LEDs on the NX32PCI adapter series provide information on the
state of the network. The LEDs work in different ways, depending on the type of Ethernet cable being used. The LEDs and their functions are listed below.

Active Indicator. Indicates power and/or data transmit/receive.

Link Indicator. Indicates the state of the data link.

  2 Installation
  -------------------------------------------------

2.1 Inserting the Adapter into the PC

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the adapter during installation,
touch a grounded object to release any electrostatic build up
in your body. Static electricity can damage certain components
          on the adapter.

To insert the adapter into your computer, follow these steps:

Turn OFF your PC and unplug it from the power outlet.

           Remove the PC cover.

Insert the adapter into an available PCI expansion slot.

Secure the adapter in the slot with a bracket screw.

           Replace the computer cover.

After inserting the adapter into your computer, you will no
longer need to remove it to adjust physical settings when
configuring the card. Configuration (that is, assigning system
resources to the adapter) takes place entirely through software.

  2.2 Connecting Network Cables

      2.2.1 Connecting 10BASE-T Twisted-Pair Cable

This type of connection requires a twisted-pair cable of
maximum length of 100 meters with RJ-45 connectors at both ends.
Pins 1 and 2 of this cable must be a pair and so should pins 3 and 6. Each pin must connect straight to the other end of the cable (that is, pin 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 and 6 to 6).

Connect one end of the twisted-pair cable to the RJ-45 port of the
adapter and the other end to a 10BASE-T hub. To connect, orient the
RJ-45 connector correctly with the port, then push the connector into the port until it locks into place.

2.2.2 Connecting 10BASE2 Thin Coaxial Cable

This section discusses how to connect the adapter to a 10BASE2
      Ethernet network. Follow these steps:

           Turn OFF the computer.

Connect a BNC T-connector to the BNC port on the adapter.

If your computer exists at the end of a 10BASE2 segment,
then you only need to connect a single cable to the adapter
via the T-connector; otherwise, you will need to connect two
cables to both ends of the T-connector. With just a single
cable connected to the T-connector, you will need to attach
a terminator on the unused end of the T-connector.

  2.3 Configuring the Adapter

To configure the NX32PCI Ethernet adapter, all you need to do is insert the card into a PCI slot in your computer, secure the card, close the case and connect the network cable. The adapter along with the other installed cards will be configured by the PCI BIOS and the
operating system at system bootup. After booting up, just load
the appropriate drivers to establish the software connection to
your network. If your computer connects to a network during bootup
(via startup files), then this step is handled by the system.

  2.4 Testing the Adapter Functionality

The setup/diagnostic program incorporates two diagnostic tests for
checking the adapter's basic functions and connectivity on the network.

The Network Diagnostics test checks the adapter's ability to
communicate on the network. This test requires that at least two
computers be connected by an Ethernet cable. One computer should be
set as the Respoder and the others as an Initiator. If this test
succeeds, then you have confirmed that the adapter can communicate
      on your network.

For the Network Diagnostics to be successful, network drivers supplied on the NX32PCI adapter's installation diskette must be located in the same directory as the setup program. The install program on the diskette takes care of copying all necessary files from the installation diskette to the same directory on your hard drive. Unless you move files at a later time, you should not have any problems here.
