3. Installation Instructions
This section describes installing an Ultra160 SCSI card. There
are many different installation scenarios; please be sure to
select the right one for you.
3.1. Installing Windows XP with an Ultra160 SCSI Card
* When installing Windows XP for the first time with an
Ultra160 card, it is highly recommended to allow the
operating system to use it's embedded driver for
installation. After this is complete, proceed to Section
3.2 for driver update instructions.
3.2. Updating the Driver with an Ultra160 Adapter Already
Installed
NOTE: If you are adding an Ultra160 card into an existing
Windows XP installation, it will automatically install
the embedded driver without user intervention. Follow
these steps once it completes the installation to
update it.
1) Click Start, then Control Panel. Click on Performance
and Maintenance. Then click on System.
2) Click on the Hardware Tab at the top and click Device
Manager.
3) Double click the SCSI and RAID Controller group,
right-click the SCSI card you wish to upgrade, and select
Properties. Then, click on the Driver TAB at the top and
click Update Driver.
4) Choose the "Install from a list or specific location"
option and click Next.
5) Insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Driver Set for Windows XP
into the floppy drive, check the "Include this location
in the search" option, type in:
a:\winxp\ultra160
and click Next.
6) Select the appropriate SCSI card and click Next.
7) At this point you may be prompted with a warning message
that the driver has not passed Windows Logo testing.
Ignore this message if it appears and click "Continue
Anyway".
8) When the driver is copied on the hard drive, click
Finish.
9) You may be required to restart the computer at this
point.
9) If you are installing a dual channel SCSI card, repeat
Step 3. Then, choose the option "Install the software
automatically" and follow the instructions. Again, you
may be required to restart your computer.
3.3. Installing an Ultra160 Adapter into an existing Windows XP
Installation
* Follow these steps only if the Ultra160 SCSI card you are
installing is not automatically detected and installed.
1) Physically install the Ultra160 SCSI card and boot up the
system. Windows will automatically discover the new
hardware and start the Found New Hardware Wizard.
2) Choose the "Install from a list or specific location"
option and click Next.
3) Insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Driver Set for Windows XP
into the floppy drive, check the "Include this location
in the search" option, type in:
a:\winxp\ultra160
and click Next.
4) Select the appropriate SCSI card and click Next.
5) At this point you may be prompted with a warning message
that the driver has not passed Windows Logo testing.
Ignore this message if it appears and click "Continue
Anyway".
6) When the driver is copied on the hard drive, click
Finish.
7) You may be required to restart the computer at this
point.
8) If you are installing a dual channel SCSI card, the Found
New Hardware Wizard will restart. Choose the option
"Install the software automatically" and follow the
instructions. Again, you may be required to restart your
computer.
3.4. Changing SCSI Boot Controllers in Windows XP
1) With the existing SCSI card still installed, install the
Ultra160 SCSI card into your system. Do not attach any
devices to it at this time.
2) Boot up the operating system. Allow the operating system
to detect and install the embedded driver for the new
SCSI card. Update the driver (see Section 3.2) once this
is complete.
2) Shut down Windows XP. Turn off your system if necessary.
3) Switch the bootable hard drive and any devices desired
from the old SCSI card to the new SCSI card and boot up
your computer.
