Cabling Information
===================

The NE10/100 adapters have a snap-in RJ-45 connector for use with
TPE cabling. TPE cabling is also called RJ-45 cabling, Unshielded
Twisted Pair (UTP), and 10BASE-T.

10 Mbps Cabling - Twisted-Pair Ethernet (TPE)
---------------------------------------------

The 10BASE-T specification can be obtained by contacting the IEEE
at 800-678-IEEE.

The RJ45 connector can use 22, 24, or 26-gauge UTP cabling. The cable
must comply with the IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T standard for Category 3, 4,
or 5. The cable between the computer and the hub must be less than 100
meters long.

100 Mbps Cabling
----------------

The cable must comply with the IEEE 802.3 100BASE-TX standard for
2-pair, Category 5, UTP cable. The cable between the computer and the
hub must be less than 100 meters long.

Common Wiring Problems
----------------------

If the Link Integrity light on the rear panel of the NE10/100 ISA
adapter is lit, then the hardware connection between the hub and the
adapter is probably ok. If the Link light is not on:

Check the connections for firm seating.
    Check/replace the cable.
    Power off/on the hub.
Check the driver/software for correct loading.

Plug and Play computers
=======================

Overview
--------
Plug and Play (PnP) is a system architecture for ISA bus computers
that automatically configures PnP hardware devices, such as the
Microdyne NE10/100 ISA adapter, when you power on the computer.

There are three types of computers can be called "Plug and
Play:"

  1. Plug and Play computers running a Plug and Play-capable
operating system, such as Windows 95.

  2. Legacy computers (non-Plug and Play) running a Plug and Play
     capable operating system.

  3. Legacy Computers (non-PnP) running DOS with a PnP Configuration
     Manager.

For all three types of computer, running CONFIG is unnecessary. If you
do not have a compter that meets one of the above types, see Chapter
4 in the User Guide.

Changing the configuration
--------------------------

If you have a PnP OS or PnP computer, it is highly recommended that
you not change the adapter's resource settings with Config. If you
don't want to accept the configuration settings the PnP computer or
CM chose for the adapter, you may disable Plug and Play on the adapter
and configure it yourself. See Chapter 4 of the User Guide for more
details.

Troubleshooting
---------------

If Plug and Play doesn't seem to be working, CONFIG will display
whether it can detect a Plug and Play in the opening screen. If
CONFIG displays No PnP BIOS or Manager Detected, it is probable that
you don't have a working version of a Plug and Play Manager. You
may wish to find a more current manager or contact your computer
manufacturer for a BIOS update. If you are installing the
adapter with a Plug and Play capable operating system as Windows 95,
it will provide Plug and Play detection and configuration for
the adapter.
