(1) OVERVIEW
============

This guide describes the basics the installation of the sk98lin driver,
and how to enable the card to use PCI-Express (PCI-E).

(2) PCI-E SUPPORT IN THE KERNEL

To include PCI-E support into the kernel requires no patches.
On some Systems the kernel has some problems to finding the
Interrups for the PCI-E card and the link comes not up.
In this case disable the local APIC CPU. Users should verify their
system whether it runs when CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=n. In SMP
environment, CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC is automatically set; however,
in UP environment, users must manually unselect CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC.

(3) INSTALLING THE PATCH

The driver can either be integrated into the kernel or
be compiled as a module. Patch the kernel with the sk98lin patch.
To compile the driver, go to the directory /usr/src/linux and execute
the command "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" and select
"Marvell Yukon Chipset / SysKonnect SK-98xx family support".
Build a new kernel when the configuration of the above options is
finished.

(4) INSTALLING FROM THE INSTALL PACKAGE

The sk98lin driver installation script supports the Marvell Yukon2
chipset based product. It has been tested with Linux on Intel/x86
machines. This script will automatically compile and load the
sk98lin driver on your host system. Before performing both
compilation and loading, it is necessary to shutdown any device
using the sk98lin kernel module and to unload the
old sk98lin kernel module. This script will do this automatically
per default. If you want to shutdown and unload the old
sk98lin kernel module manually, run the script in the EXPERT mode.

Please plug a card into your machine. Without a card the installer
isn't able to check the full driver functionality. Be sure to use
the same kernel source and kernel version. For instance, it might be,
that you run kernel version 2.4.20, but the header files the kernel
module will be compiled with refer to kernel version 2.4.21. If you
don't have the same kernel version, please install the sources
and compile a new kernel. It's not possible to mix different
kernel versions!

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
