INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HP DESKDIRECT PCI LAN ADAPTER
		      (J2585B, J2973A, J2970A)

These instructions are used to install and test the HP DeskDirect 10/100-Mbit
PCI LAN Adapter. The adapter is used in a PCI slot in the computer to connect
 to either 100VG, or 10TP or 10TL.

More information is available in "Installation Guide" that accompanies this
 HP DeskDirect LAN adapter.

This LAN adapter can support three modes of data transfer: bus master,
I/O-mapped, and memory-mapped. If a bus master PCI slot is not available
on your computer, or if a bus master driver is not available for your
network operating system, the LAN adapter can operate in I/O-mapped or
 memory-mapped mode.

 Procedure
 =========
To install, configure, and verify the HP DeskDirect 10/100 PCI LAN Adapter,
follow this procedure (detailed in the "Installation Guide"):

  1. Install the HP DeskDirect LAN adapter into a PCI slot in the computer,
preferably a PCI slot with bus mastering enabled.

NOTE: Ensure that power has been disconnected from the computer before
           opening the computer's case.

Follow the adapter's "Installation Guide", along with the computer
documentation for installing an accessory board into the computer.
Do not yet attach the LAN cable.

  2. Test the LAN adapter by doing the steps listed below.

PCI computers feature Plug-and-Play configuration of PCI adapters.
When the computer boots, the PCI BIOS will assign to each PCI adapter
the resources that may be needed. For this LAN adapter, these include
I/O address range, interrupt (IRQ), and memory map address range.

     A) Reconnect power to the computer and boot DOS.

     B) Run the HP utility "HPVGSET" on the HP Support Disk to verify that
the Plug-and-Play PCI BIOS successfully configured the LAN adapter.
For example, if the HP Support Disk is in drive A, enter the
following commands at the DOS prompt:
              A:
              HPVGSET

NOTE: If more than one HP LAN adapter is installed, then use "Select
carD" to select the specific adapter to test.

NOTE: If HPVGSET fails to find the HP DeskDirect LAN adapter, see the
              section "Installation Problems" below.

     C) Select "Card test" to verify the adapter.

NOTE: The Plug-and-Play PCI BIOS may assign the memory map address
range above extended memory; if so, HPVGSET attempts to
temporarily move the memory map addresses to an empty block
of the upper memory area to complete its testing.

NOTE: All three transfer modes (bus mastering, memory mapping, and
I/O mapping) are tested, to allow any of these modes to be used
by the driver selected in step 6 below. Any resources not
needed after that step, such as memory map addresses, will be
turned off. Since bus mastering allows for the fastest data
transfer, bus mastering will be used by default by the drivers
              where possible.

NOTE: The bus master test will fail if the LAN adapter is installed
in a PCI slot not enabled for bus mastering. Do one of the
following if this bus master failure occurs: (1) enable bus
mastering on the slot (following the computer's documentation),
or (2) move the LAN adapter to another slot that is enabled
for bus mastering, or (3) in step 6 below select a driver for
I/O-mapped or memory-mapped mode (an "IOMEM" driver).

  3. After "Card Test" passes, connect the LAN cable to the adapter.

  4. [Optional] You may do a preliminary test of the adapter's ability to
communicate on the link by selecting "Link test" in HPVGSET.

  5. To quit HPVGSET, select "Exit program".

  6. Install the network driver.

The HP Support Disk contains the driver files that allow the LAN
adapter to be used with the networking product on the computer.

Run the HP utility "SETUP" on the HP Support Disk to view the driver
installation instructions. For example, if the HP Support Disk is in
drive A, enter the following commands at the DOS prompt:

           A:
           SETUP

NOTE: If the HP DeskDirect LAN adapter is installed in a non-busmaster
capable slot, bus master mode (the fastest) cannot be used.
Instead select a I/O-Memory (IOMEM) driver, which will use
memory-mapped mode. Also see the section "Using Memory-Mapped Mode"
in the LAN adapter's "Installation Guide".

Otherwise, a bus master driver can be used, and the I/O address
range and the memory map address range previously configured will
           be removed.

 Installation Problems
 =====================
Since PCI computers feature Plug-and-Play configuration of PCI adapters,
conflicts with other adapters are not possible. If HPVGSET could not
recognize the HP DeskDirect LAN adapter, the most likely problem is the
adapter is not correctly seated in a PCI slot.

PCI slots are usually white and shorter than ISA or EISA slots. PCI
adapters have their components on the side of the adapter opposite to
that of ISA or EISA adapters. Ensure the adapter is fully seated in
the PCI slot by pushing the adapter straight into the slot.

On some computers the motherboard can be configured to enable or disable
PCI slots. Follow the computer's documentation to ensure that the PCI
 slots are enabled.
