This disk contains the configurator and drivers for the Hewlett-Packard
J2970A PCI Combo LAN Adapter. This adapter supports connections to 802.3
10-Mbit/s networks.
NOTE: Use of this software is subject to the HP Software License Terms

1. Overview of adapter and driver installation
==============================================
Details on adapter installation and the HPVGSET utility are contained in
the Installation Guide that accompanies the adapter, and on the support
disk in the /TECHNOTE/DDIRECT.TXT file.
Briefly, the steps for installation are:
1. Prepare the computer for a new adapter.
2. Install the adapter.
3. Run HPVGSET to configure and test the adapter.
4. Attach the network cable.
5. Run SETUP to help locate the correct installation instructions.
Use the synopsis below to help locate the directory that contains the
driver needed for the networking software that is or will be loaded on
the PC. In the same directory, a README file details the steps to install
and configure the adapter driver.

2. Synopsis of directory contents on the support disk

DIRECTORY CONTENTS
\ (root) Contains the HPVGSET and SETUP utilities.
ARTISOFT Contains instructions for using the DOS NDIS 2.01 driver with
Artisoft LANtastic v6.00 (or later) workstations.
DOS Contains the Novell 16-bit ODI driver for DOS or Microsoft
Windows 3.X clients.
EMM386 Contains the Microsoft utility for updating EMM386.EXE to
version 4.49.
IBMLS Contains the NDIS 2.01 drivers for IBM LAN Server OS/2
servers and DOS clients.
MSLANMAN.DOS Contains the NDIS 2.01 DOS driver for use with LAN Manager
2.x DOS clients.
NDIS2 Contains installation instructions for NDIS 2.01 drivers
for DOS and OS/2 for use with other networking products.
NOVELL Contains the 32-bit ODI drivers for use with NetWare
servers (4.XX) and Windows NT Requester.
NT Contains the 32-bit NDIS 3.0 drivers for Microsoft Windows
NT 3.5X and 4.0 server and workstation.
OS2 Contains the Novell 16-bit ODI drivers for OS/2 Requester
client.
PCNFS Contains instructions for using the DOS NDIS 2.01 driver
with SunSelect PC-NFS.
PCTCP Contains instructions for using the DOS NDIS 2.01 driver
with FTP Software PC/TCP.
SCO Contains instructions on how to obtain the compressed TAR
archive of the LLI and MDI drivers for use with SCO systems.
TECHNOTE Contains technical notes on adapter installation and other
driver information.
VINES Contains instructions for using the DOS NDIS 2.01 driver
with Banyan Vines v4.00 (or later) clients.
WFWG Contains the 16-bit NDIS 2.01 driver used by Microsoft
Windows for Workgroups 3.1X.
WIN95 Contains the 32-bit NDIS 3.0 drivers for Microsoft Windows
95.

4. How to obtain driver updates
===============================
After obtaining an archive file set using one of the services described
below, go to the "CREATING AN HP SUPPORT DISK PROCEDURE" below for the
instructions for creating a support disk.
Using the Internet World Wide Web Site

Available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Click on "Drivers", "HP PC LAN Adapter Products", "Software & Drivers".
Click on "[English]" appearing beneath the desired file name, to
download the file.
The download file name consists of the six-character HP product
number J2970A followed by the file type (extension) ".exe" --
that is, J2970A.EXE.
Using the Internet FTP Archive
HP FTP Library Service
------------------------------
1. Run FTP. At the "ftp>" prompt, open a connection to the HP Internet
archive:
ftp> open ftp-boi.external.hp.com
2. Login as user "anonymous". A password is not required; for tracking
purposes enter your internet mail address:
User: anonymous
Password: YourName@YourComputer
3. Change directory to /pub/networking/software:
ftp> cd /pub/networking/software
4. Set file transfer mode to binary:
ftp> binary
5. List the HP PC LAN support disk archive files available:
ftp> dir
6. Use the "get filename" command to download the file to your local
computer. For example:
ftp> get J2970A.exe
7. Quit the FTP session:
ftp> quit
Using CompuServe

To obtain the updates, at the CompuServe prompt, enter
go hpsys
For the Network Library section, enter:
lib 7
To browse the library for a complete list of EtherTwist software
updates available, enter:

To obtain the updates:
1. Connect to BBS and register. Follow the instructions to add your
name to the BBS users list.
2. At the Main System menu, select "l" for "Libraries".
The Main System Menu (TOP) appears as follows:

3. In the Library menu, select "s" for "Select a Library".

3. List all the libraries by typing "?".
Choose the index for the library "HP Network Products Library"
4. Download PC LAN Adapter files by selecting "D" for "Download a file".
The download file name consists of the six-character HP product
number J2970A followed by the file type (extension) ".exe" --
that is, J2970A.EXE.
5. Choose the transfer type.
6. Initiate the download with your modem application.

CREATING AN HP SUPPORT DISK
PROCEDURE
---------------------------
To create a copy of the support disk, a blank formatted 3.5-inch floppy
and the support disk archive file are needed. For example, if the
support disk archive file J2970A.EXE is on the root of the C drive
and a blank 3.5-inch floppy is in the A drive, execute the following
commands:

NOTES: The /x option must be used to extract the directory structure.
A lower case "x" must be used.
Do not extract the Support Disk archive directly onto the floppy.
Temporary files used during the extraction will exceed the 1.44
Mbyte size limit of the floppy.

Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
