Linksys EtherFast Series LAN Cards README File for PC LAN (DOS) -- Workstations & Servers Copyright (C) 1997 Linksys, All Rights Reserved ------------------------------------------------ Before You Begin Files Provided Setup for Workstations for Servers Technical Support Before You Begin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for purchasing your EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card from Linksys. The instructions below explain how to set up the card's network software drivers for use with your particular network operating system like Windows 95, Novell, Unix, etc. The EtherFast card is built for use in 32-bit, Plug-and-Play desktop computers with auto-configuring PCI slots. It must be used in your PC's bus master PCI slot. For further information, see the User Guide that came with the card. When a PCI card is used in a computer that has a Plug-and-Play BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), the card is automatically configured by the PC each time the machine is booted. The card's IRQ, memory address, and other operating parameters are automatically assigned. There is no way to change a Plug-and-Play card's IRQ and other settings outside of the BIOS menu(s) that your computer providse. If the resources that are assigned to your EtherFast card seem to conflict with other devices in your computer, you will need to use your system's BIOS to resolve the conflicts. If you have problems configuring your BIOS or resolving IRQ or other hardware conflicts, consult your computer manual or contact your PC's manufacturer for BIOS setup & configuration directions. Here are some general guidelines to follow when installing a PCI card (like the EtherFast card) into your computer: * If you need to configure your PC's BIOS in order to resolve an IRQ or other conflict with the EtherFast card, there are a few possibilities: - Your PCI may not allow you to change the IRQ value(s) of the PCI slot(s). In this case, you will ONLY be able to use the IRQ & MEM values that have been pre-assigned to each slot. The popular BIOS from Phoenix, for example, does not allow you to modify BIOS-assigned IRQ settings. - You may be able to change the IRQ & MEM values for a given PCI slot by setting jumpers on your PC's mother board. Please refer to your PC's motherboard user guide for specific instructions. - Your PC may allow you to change the IRQ & MEM values for a given PCI slot by accessing the PC's BIOS setup menu. Please refer to your PC's user guide for specific details. The BIOSs from companies like AMI and Award are fully customizable from their BIOS menus, for example. * When loading the EMM386.EXE program in your computer's CONFIG.SYS, you MUST use version MS-DOS 6.22 or above. If you load an older EMM386.EXE program (below DOS 6.22), your computer will hang up while loading the network driver. * The EtherFast LAN adapter should be used in a 32-bit PCI slot that supports PCI Local Bus Mastering. It cannot be plugged into a PCI Bus Slave slot. Consult your motherboard's documentation for more information on master & slave slots. * When using NT, set your BIOS PCI settings, and the PCI settings within NT itself, to MANUAL. NT is *not* a Plug-and-Play BIOS, and will not usually recognize LAN cards if they are set to be automatically detected & configured. ----------------------------------------------- FILES PROVIDED ------------------------------------------------ The following files under on the EtherFast disk under the NDIS\DOS directory are used during the setup: LNE100.DOS DOS NDIS2 driver PROTOCOL.INI Driver binding information and operational parameters ------------------------------------------------ WORKSTATION SETUP ------------------------------------------------ The following instructions are for installing the PC LAN program on a workstation. The section after this gives instructions for installing PC LAN on a server. Both procedures use the LAN Support Program (LSP) for the installation process. 1. At the DOS prompt, insert the IBM LAN Support Program (LSP) v1.3x diskette. 2. Type: DXMAID 3. Press [Enter] three times. The Environment Information screen appears. 4. Specify the values that follow for the fields on this screen. Use the spacebar to cycle through the available options for each field. For LSP v1.30 and v1.33: Configuration for this computer? Yes Use existing configuration information? No Do you have adapter option diskettes? Yes Are you configuring for two adapters? No Source for LSP A:\ Target for new configuration C:\LSP For LSP v1.35: Are you updating an existing configuration? No Do you have driver diskettes? Yes Target for LSP: C:\LSP CONFIG.SYS to update: C:\CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT to update: C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT 5. Press [Enter] to accept these selections. The program prompts you to install the "option" diskette. 6. Insert the Linksys disk into your floppy drive and specify the path: A:\NDIS\DOS 7. Press [Enter]. The files are copied from the Linksys disk to the target directory on the hard disk. 8. For LSP v1.30 and v1.33 users, press [Enter] two times. For LSP v1.35 users, press [Enter] once only. The files are copied from the Linksys disk to the target directory on the hard disk. 9. When prompted, re-insert the LSP diskette and press [Enter]. The Current Configuration screen appears with "10/100 Ethernet Adapter". 10. Press [F4]. LSP is installed. 11. Use a text editor to edit the CONFIG.SYS file, specifying at least 20 files in the FILES= line. Example: files=20 12. Save your CONFIG.SYS file and reboot your system. 13. If you are using DOS v5.0 or later, type at the DOS prompt: SETVER CIP_MAIN.EXE 5.00 14. Press [Enter]. 15. Reboot your system. 16. Insert the PC LAN Install diskette in your computer floppy drive. 17. Type: INSTALL 18. Press [Enter]. 19. Press [Enter] three more times. 20. The default is C:\DOS. 24. Specify the machine ID and the domain ID. The domain ID must be the domain server ID, and it must be the same for all workstations on the network. 25. Follow the prompts to complete the installation until you reach the Change System Configuration File screen. Usually, you should accept the default for the system configuration file. The Change System Batch File screen appears. Usually you should accept the default. ------------------------------------------------ SERVER SETUP ----------------------------------------------- The following section provides instructions for installing PC LAN on a server. This procedure uses the LAN Support Program (LSP) for the installation process. 1. At the DOS prompt, insert the LSP diskette. 2. Type: DXMAID 3. Press [Enter]. 4. Press [Enter] twice. The Environment Information screen appears. 5. Specify the values that follow for the fields on this screen. Use the spacebar to cycle through the available options for each field.
