Downloading the Drivers

All driver updates for the "Rapid Transit 56K ISA Modem" and
"56K V90 ISA Modem" are located on the "All Drivers and Updates"
page of the SMART Modular Technologies website. The latest
recommended updates are on the "New Drivers and Updates" page.

		http://www.smartmodulartech.com/i_otech.html

Click on the description for the "Rapid Transit 56K ISA Modem"
or "56K V90 ISA Modem", then click on the link to the FTP site
	ftp://www.smartm.com/BBSfiles/v566iw9x.exe This will begin the
download for you, the file that you should receive in the
	download is V566iW9x.EXE

When the download is complete, the update file can be found in
the specified Download directory of your system.

Note: Files downloaded from the SMART Modular Technologies
website are stored in the default Download directory of your
system. This is the location on the hard drive, where files you
receive are temporarily stored. The name and location of the
directory is specified in the settings of your Web Browser or
your internet access software. The following are examples
indicating the default locations used to store download files.

America Online (AOL)	C:\America Online 5.0\Download

	MS"Dial-Up-Networking"	C:\Windows\Temp
	(Internet Explorer 5.0)

Creating the Installation Diskette

All driver files on the SMART Modular Technologies website with
the .EXE file extension are self extracting compressed file. To
extract the updated drivers place a blank 3.5" floppy diskette
in the A: drive. Locate V566iW9x.EXE on your system's hard drive
and RUN the file, this will extract the contents (drivers) to
the floppy disk, creating an installation disk.

After extracting the driver, it is recommended that you take a
few moments to thoroughly review the README.TXT file which will
be on the newly created installation disk.

Note: Do Not copy the original download file to the disk in the
A: drive. Attempting to extract the drivers onto the same disk
in the A: drive, which also contains the downloaded file, will
result in a "Not enough disk Space" error.

Updating the Modem Drivers

The modem drivers are easily updated from within the Win 95/98
"Device Manager". In the Device Manager list, click on the "+"
(plus), next to the Modem icon. This will bring up the list of
currently installed modems by name ie; "Rapid Transit 56K ISA
Modem" or "56K V90 ISA Modem". Click on the modem which will
receive the update, and then click the "Properties" button.

In the "Modem Properties" click the "Driver" tab followed by
clicking on the "Update Driver" button. Follow the prompts from
Windows as it searches for the new driver.

	"Control Panel"--->"System"--->"Device Manager"--->"Modems"--->
								      |
	<---"Driver"<---"Properties"<---"Rapid Transit 56K Modem"<-----
	|
	--->"Update Driver"

Note: By default, some versions of Windows 95 begin the search
for new drivers in the C:\Windows\INF directory on the hard
drive or on the \Win95 of the Windows 95 CDROM. Searching in
these locations will cause Windows to post the report
"...drivers for the device were not found in the specified
location...". This message can be, and is often misinterpreted,
leading many into believing the installation has failed. However
the installation did not fail, Windows simply starts it's
search looking in the wrong drive and directory location.

When Windows prompts that it will "....search for the updated
drivers in the specified location", make sure that the
specified location is the Installation Diskette in the A: drive
Or, if the drivers were extracted to a directory which is
located located on the hard drive, when Windows prompts it will
search for the drivers, be sure to specify the location of the
	drivers on the hard drive.

Should you have problems installing the updated drivers....

The most common problem which causes the updated drivers not to
install properly, are the presence of the previous or OLD
drivers on the system. This is caused by the method used to
install the modem for the first time. If the NEW drivers do not
install properly through the Windows "Update Drivers" tool.
Following, in sequence, the steps below generally will allow
the NEW drivers to install properly on most systems.

1)	Prepare a blank diskette and place it in the floppy disk drive
	(A:\ drive)
2)	Run the V566iW9x.EXE file, the drivers will extract to the disk
in the A:\ drive, this will create an install disk.
3)	From within the Win 95/98 "Device Manager" click the " + "
sign next the icon for "Modems", then click once (highlight) on
the Rapid Transit 56K Modem and click the "Remove" button to
delete the current installation of the modem from the System's
 	Registry.
4)	Use the Windows "Files and Folders" search tool to locate and
delete copies of the modem's .INF files from the
C:\Windows\INF\Other directories. The names of the file to look
	for are: LTMODEM.INF and LTWAVE.INF

In some systems running Win 95b, Win 95c and Win 98, Windows may
change the file names to LTLTMODEM.INF and LTLTWAVE.INF.

	LTMODEM.INF (LTLTMODEM.INF)	LTWAVE.INF (LTLTWAVE.INF)
	LTMODEM.VXD LTDSVD.DLL
	LTCOM.VXD LTVCD.VXD

IMPORTANT NOTE: In some later systems, such as those offered by
Quantex, the driver files may have been renamed L56419X.INF and
L56419XW.INF The drivers are located in the C:\Windows\INF
directory, with additional (Hidden) copies in the
C:\Windows\System directory. If these files are present, copy
and place them into a temporary directory or onto a diskette
for back-up purposes. By re-locating or removing these files
from the C:\Windows\INF and C:\Windows\System directories,
Windows will be able to install the new drivers.

5)	Once again, using the Windows "Files and Folders" search tool,
locate and delete the files, LTMODEM.VXD, LTCOM.VXD, LTVCD.VXD
and LTDSVD.DLL files. These are located in the
	C:\Windows\System directory.
6)	Check for and any additional copies of the INF, VxD and DLL
files that are still present on the system. Several PC
manufacturers that include modems in their system, typically
will place copies of the modem's driver files in a hidden
directory. Most commonly this is the C:\Windows\Options\CABS
directory. You should run a complete system search to locate
any copies of the old drivers.
7)	Once the OLD driver files have been deleted from the system.
Reboot the system and allow Windows to detect the modem as
"New Hardware". Complete the installation of the modem using
	the installation disk you created.
