GARMIN eTrex Software Upgrade Information ------------------------------------------------------------ WARNINGS: If this software is uploaded to a GPS unit other than the product for which it is designed, you will not be able to operate that unit. If the upload software fails, verify that you have good batteries installed and try again. If repeated upload attempts fail, you may need to return the unit to GARMIN for service. ------------------------------------------------------------ Instructions for uploading the new software to your eTrex using Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT: 1. Download the appropriate self-extracting archive file for your eTrex onto your hard drive. 2. Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable file. 3. Connect your eTrex to a free serial port (Com 1, 2, 3, or 4) on your PC with a PC interface cable. 4. Turn on your eTrex and ensure the Serial Data Format is set to "GARMIN". You can find this setting in Menu Page -> Setup -> Interface. 5. Change to the directory in which you unzipped the files, (i.e., C:\GARMIN), and run the update program, updater.exe. Select the appropriate serial port and click "OK" to begin the software upload. During the upload, the eTrex's display will indicate "SWT LOADING" The upload process should take 3-10 minutes to complete. When the upload is completed, the eTrex will reset itself and turn on normally. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.11 to 2.14: 1. Software modified to support hardware changes. Does not effect user operation. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.10 to 2.11: 1. Added +5:45 "other" time offset to accommodate Nepal time zone. 2. Prevent excessive number of track points from being recorded. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.09 to 2.10: 1. Added an Advanced Skyview mode on the GPS page that displays the location in the sky of each satellite that the unit is tracking. Along with this skyview is the signal strength for each satellite. To get to this new mode press the ENTER key while on the GPS page and an option menu will appear. This option menu contains two items: SETUP DISPLAY and ADVANCED SKYVIEW. The SETUP DISPLAY option will take you to the Display Setup page for adjusting contrast and light controls. Selecting the ADVANCED SKYVIEW option will switch the GPS page to display the advanced skyview information. 2. Allow display of speed and track when velocity is below 1.0 MPH and selective availability is off. 3. Fixed route leg distance calculation that occurred when the unit did not have a fix. 4. Fixed Dutch grid conversions and added new Dutch map datum to accompany the Dutch grid. 5. The map datum list on the Units Setup page is now displayed alphabetically. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.08 to 2.09: 1. Fixed elevation display on the Compass page so that it does not "dash out" after 9999. 2. Improvements in positioning to fix erroneous track logs. 3. Improved the arrival alarm. 4. Changed the meter unit symbol from 'mt' to 'm' to be consistent with international standards. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.07 to 2.08: 1. The UTC label is no longer displayed on the time when the UTC offset is zero. 2. The user selected north reference offset is saved correctly. 3. The restore defaults button on the units setup page saves the defaults correctly. 4. Elevation is no longer displayed in kilometers or kilofeet when exceeding 1,000. It now remains in meters or feet. 5. Shortened the Australian grid abbreviations. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.06 to 2.07: 1. New display option on the Map page for the Goto navigational line. The line can be displayed from your current position (default) or from your original point of navigation as a course line. This option can be changed from the Map page's option menu by selecting "SHOW BEARING LINE" (default) or "SHOW COURSE LINE". ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.05 to 2.06: 1. New user configurable north reference offset that can be modified on the units setup page. 2. New project waypoint feature that allows you to create waypoints from existing waypoints given a distance a bearing. 3. New hide/show waypoints feature on the Map page that is accessed from the option menu. 4. Editing the location of a waypoint is now displayed correctly. 5. Added PVT output support. 6. Fixed rare memory anomaly caused by uncontrolled shutdown. 7. Added bearing and distance to the map when veiwing a waypoint from the Review Waypoint page. 8. The elevation on the Review Waypoint page can now be modified. 9. Added more time zones. Note: Daylight savings needs to be turned on/off manually for time zones out of the United States. 10. More zoom levels on the Map page. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.04 to 2.05: 1. Initialized user grid for proper software upgrade to existing units that contain software version 2.03 or less. ------------------------------------------------------------ Changes Made from Versions 2.03 to 2.04: 1. Turned on seconds attribute for time display. 2. Added user grid format and user datum setups. 3. New data entry pages for number fields and position origin field. 4. After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
