Scanner Controller Software
===========================

The scanner controller software is the software used by
the scanner microprocessor to control the cameras,
the motor, the SCSI bus, etc. In the following the
scanner controller software is called firmware for short.

The scanner firmware is stored in FLASH memory, so new
versions can be downloaded to the scanner through the
SCSI interface.

This disk containes the file FIRMWARE.EXE which is a
selfextracting that must be copied to your hard disk and
expanded by running the commands:

copy a:\firmware.exe c:\temp\firmware.exe
firmware.exe

This c:\temp directory will now contain the loader and the
firmware. The loader is a character mode program that runs
in a DOS shell under Windows. The loader exists in two versions:

CTX_PRGM	works under DOS and Windows 3.11
CTX_PR32	works under Windows 95 and Windows NT

For the loader to function correctly the scanner must be
connected and powered on and an ASPI driver must be loaded
and running.

To download firmware copy the contents of this floppy to your
hard disk and run the following command:

	CTX_PRGM SCUxyy
or
	CTX_PR32 SCUxyy

The string SCUxyy is a placeholder for the actual string you
must enter to download firmware. To know what the correct
string is for the scanner you want to download firmware to,
open the scanner by removing the back cover and read the board
revision label on the SCU board.

Example of SCU board revision label:	SCUA12

Note that on some early production models the marking might be
8 characters long like SCUA0501, but you should just enter the
first 6 characters.

When running under Windows 95 or NT, the ctx_pr32 program will
automatically detect the SCSI adapter number your scanner is
connected to. When running under Windows 3.11 this is not the
case. If your scanner is not connected to SCSI adapter 0, you
can use the -a switch to specify the SCSI adapter your scanner
is connected to. For example if your scanner is connected to
adapter 1 use:

ctx_prgm -a1 SCUA12

Most ASPI drivers will display the adapter number when the PC
boots.

I case that downloading fails (this could be caused by a power
failure while downloading) the scanner may be loaded with an
invalid firmware. In this case the scanner will not be able to
startup correctly and it will automatically enter the scanners
programming mode. The scanner will indicate this by
continuously turning on and off all LED’s one at a time. You
can correct this problem by running the loader again as
described above.

In the rare occasion that downloading a new firmware failed,
but the loader in the scanner cannot see that the firmware is
invalid, you can force the scanner into programming mode by
turning off the scanner power, setting SCSI switch 7 to ON
and turn the scanner power back on. The scanner will now be in
programming mode and you can download new firmware as
described above. When you have downloaded new firmware you
must turn off the scanner power, set SCSI switch 7 to OFF
and turn the scanner power back on.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
