WINDOWS 2000

Windows has extensive USB support built in to the operating system. To use Windows 2000 with your Imation USB SuperDisk drive, just plug it in and the correct Microsoft driver will be installed if needed.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

USB drivers should install without difficulty in most situations. It is not normally recommended that the software drivers be installed using the Setup.exe utility within the driver folder. It is highly recommended instead to just plug the drive into the USB port on the computer and let Windows detect the presense of new hardware and search for suitable drivers.

If the drive is not detected by Windows there are several possible scenarios. 1) The drive was already detected by Windows and a suitable driver was already installed. 2) The drive was already detected by Windows and was installed as an unknown device with no driver, and 3) The system is not USB ready.

	1) Driver already installed: If the driver is already installed the plugging in the drive while Windows is running will result in an icon appearing in My Computer or Windows Explorer. The icon may be labeled either a 3 1/2 Floppy or a Removable Disk depending upon the driver version and the view you are using.

	2) Unknown device. If the drive was improperly installed it may appear as an Unknown device. To correct this problem; with the device connected open Start | Control Panel | System | Device Manager and look under UNKNOWN devices; If the Imation drive is listed there click on it to select it, and press the Remove button. Unplug the device, wait 10 seconds, and re-connect the drive to the USB port. When the Add Hardware Wizard launches make sure you point it to the correct driver location. (The folder where this file was extracted to.)

	3) USB Ready? - To be ready to accept a USB device your system must have the following configuration: 1) It is running Windows 98 or Windows 98-SE. 2) It has built-in USB ports. 3) The USB ports are active., and 4) The USB hardware is fully functional.

Testing for USB Ready. A program can be downloaded from http://www.usb.org/shopping_bag.html it has a link called "USB evaluation utility" which can be downloaded as the file USBReady.exe . Running this utility will inspect your system for the presence of proper OS, hardware, and system settings. It does not test the actual port for functionality or whether the USB connector is properly connected.

Looking to the device manager will also reveal if USB is active in your machine. Near the bottom of the device list should be a section called "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", expanding that should reveal at least the following, a) a "USB Universal Host Controller", and "USB Root Hub". If either of those are not present you may have some hardware configuration issues.
