Installation Procedure.  Please read this carefully before proceeding to upgrade the firmware of your NEX II Digital Player.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
====================
1. Pentium Processor 133 MHz or higher
2. 32 MB RAM
3. Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
4. USB host hub connector
5. NEX II Digital Player
6. USB Cable
7. Fresh set of AA batteries


INSTALLATION
============
To upgrade your NEX II Digital Audio Player, please follow these procedures:

1. Download firmware 1.43 from www.frontierlabs.com/Downloads.html

2. Save firmware 1.43 on your computer hard disk.  Remember which directory you have saved it to.

3. Unzip firmware 1.43 and you will find the following files:
   - LOAD16.img
   - nexiiug.img
   - IMPORTANT - READ ME.txt (this file)

4. Insert a Compact Flash Card into NEX II.

5. Insert a fresh set of AA batteries into the NEX II Player

6. Turn on NEX II

7. Connect NEX II to your computer with the USB cable that came with your NEX II package.  (Connect the flat end to the player and the USB end to your computer)

8. Both NEX II and the computer should automatically detect each other.

9. Delete all contents in the CF card.  Or format the CF card (with FAT file system *NOT FAT32*) to erase all contents.

10. Locate the unzipped firmware files mentioned in item 3 above from your computer.   

11. Drag & drop LOAD16.img and nexiiug.img file to the Compact Flash card in your NEX II. The transfer will take a few seconds.  Make sure the flashing "Downloading..." message on the NEX II has dissapeared first.

12. After the transfer is completed, disconnect the USB cable and turn off your NEX II.  

13. Keep the Compact Flash card inside the player.

14. Turn your NEX II back on and the upgrading of the Firmware will automatically proceed.  DO NOT SWITCH OFF the player while upgrading is taking place.  Interrupting NEX II during upgrading will cause irreversible damage to the player!

15. You will see on the LCD of NEX II the following messages:
    - erasing old img
    - writing new img

16. When the upgrading is complete, the LCD screen will read 'Upgrade complete, press STOP'

17. Press STOP and hold to switch off the player.

18. The upgrade is now complete.  To check which version of Firmware you are using, you can go to "Information" under the Function settings menu of NEX II.

19. The automatically renamed firmware files that remains on your compact flash can be now safely deleted.


About NEX II Firmware
======================================

The NEX II Firmware version 1.43 that you are about to upgrade onto the NEX II player is the main software and operating program that will power and control the NEX II player.  The Firmware actually consists of a number of different files that will do the following:

- Provide an operating system for NEX II
- Provide a user interface
- Control the USB connection with your computer

The following improvements and changes have been built into NEX II Firmware version 1.43

- Corrected data loss during USB transfer with some pc motherboards.
- Combined "c" and "m" versions of previous firmwares.
- Added more memory buffering to accommodate some "slow" CF cards
- Eliminated song cut off at the end of each song with previous "m" firmware versions.
- Lengthened the backlight duration from 3 seconds to 5 seconds
- Increased the speed of fast forward and fast rewind.
- Player will not turn on with Lock button switched on.
- Corrected fast forward and fast rewind bug for WMA formatted songs.
- Improved USB connection with some computers
- Improved compact flash card compatibility.
- Added delay to FN & Stop buttons

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
