Tape Device Driver Installation Instructions
Windows NT 3.51

==================================================================

To install tape device driver files:

 1. Double click on the "Windows NT Setup" icon in the "Main"
    program group.

 2. Select "Add/Remove Tape Devices..." in the "Options" menu of
    Windows NT Setup.

 3. Make a note of the type of drivers currently installed. For
    each of the tape drivers you want to update, sequentially
    select each driver and click "Remove" to remove the driver
    from list. If you are initially adding new drivers, please
    skip this step.

 4. Select "Add..." in the "Tape Device Setup" window.

 5. Open/expand the "Device:" list in the "Select Tape Device
    Option" window.

 6. Select "Other (Requires a disk from a hardware manufacturer)"
    at the bottom of the "Device:" list in the "Select Tape
    Device Option" window.

 7. Enter the drive/path to the directory where the desired set
    of tape device driver files and their "oemsetup.inf" file are
    stored on disk.

 8. Select "OK" in the "Insert Diskette" window.

 9. Select one of the options in the "Choose a Tape Driver
    supported by this hardware manufacturer's disk." list in the
    "Select OEM Option" window; i.e., select the description of
    the set of tape drives that you want load a device driver
    for.

10. Select "OK" in the "Select OEM Option" window.

11. Select "Install" in the "Select Tape Device Option" window.

12. If the option appears, then select "New" in the "Windows NT
    Setup" dialog; otherwise, enter the same drive/path to the
    floppy disk that was entered in step #7 above. IMPORTANT:
    always select "New" if it appears -- do NOT select "Current".

13. Select "Continue" in the "Windows NT Setup" window. The
    "Tape Device Setup" window will reappear with a line item now
    included in the "Tape Devices installed on ..." list.

Repeat steps 4 to 13 for each storage device that you wish to
add. When complete, close the "Tape Device Setup" window,
close/exit Windows NT Setup, and shutdown and restart Windows NT
to activate the changes made.

B. Storage Device and Driver Information
========================================

The following is a list of drivers supplied with Backup Exec v7.0.
This list displays specific device support for each driver
class as of August 26, 1997. Any capacities noted with specific
devices assumes no hardware compression. The left column (where
noted) identifies the SCSI INQUIRY string of the device. The
right column identifies Vendor and/or Model.

Note: Any information referenced with "loader" pertains to the
drive internal to a loader. Autoloader support requires a
separate driver.

Support for ATAPI tape drives are shipped with Windows NT 4.0;
however, ATAPI tape drive support is NOT included in Windows NT
3.51. Several computer system manufacturers have done extensive
testing and qualified these drives in some of their systems under
NT 3.51. We require Service Pack 5 for NT 3.51 systems;
however, ATAPI.SYS in NT 3.51 Service Packs 4 and 5 will NOT work
with ATAPI tape drives. ATAPI.SYS in Service Pack 3 can be used
with NT 3.51 Service Pack 5 to support ATAPI tape drives.

ATAPI.SYS from NT 3.51 service pack 3 logs tape drive busy
conditions as timeout errors in the system error event log. These
are normal conditions for tape drives and can be safely ignored.

Some computer system manufacturers have produced a replacement for
ATAPI.SYS. Please follow you computer system vendor's
recommendations.

* ATAPI device driver support is supplied for Intel platform only.

Hardware Compression
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tapes made using hardware compression on one manufacturers drive
may not be readable by a different manufacturers drive.  If
exchange between different tape drive manufacturers is desired,
then software compression (or no compression at all) should be
used.  Additionally, it is recommended that when hardware
compression is used on the first set on tape, all subsequent sets
should also be hardware compressed.  Mixing of hardware and
software compression on the same tape should be avoided.
However, mixing of software compression and sets containing no
compression is acceptable.
Notes on specific loaders
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spectra Logic SPECTRA 4000, 5000, 9000 & 10000 Tape Library - This
loader's touch pad is not disabled during Backup Exec operation.
The only functionality that is disabled is tape movement from
slots to the access door. This makes it possible to move
tapes around in the magazine; however, various Backup Exec
hardware errors will result.
