1. Introduction
   ============

AmbiCom Inc. is an industry leader in designing and developing mobile
networking products. This README file includes the most recent information and
is a quick reference for the AmbiCom 10/100 Ethernet CardBus PC Card.

The AmbiCom 10/100 Ethernet CardBus PC Card is designed to work with notebook
PCs which provide CardBus slots. CardBus is new industry standard PCI-based
32-bit wide bus that dramatically improves performance compared to older
PCMCIA 16-bit ISA-based buses. The CardBus standard maintains the 16-bit PC card
physical design and provides backward compatibility with 16-bit PC Cards.
AmbiCom CardBus PC Card supports 10/100Mbps Ethernet auto-negotiation
connectivity that provides much higher network bandwidth. In addition, no user
or system administrator intervention is required to link at 10 or 100 Mbits
speeds.

Please remember to complete your Product Registration card and mail it to
AmbiCom to receive information about software upgrades and new products
releases.

4. Getting Started
   ===============

   1) Make sure the notebook PC supports CardBus slots BEFORE attempting
      installation. If a 32-bit CardBus PC Card is inserted into 16-bit PC
      Card (16-bit PCMCIA card) slots, it may DAMAGE the notebook PC and the
      CardBus PC Card.

      If you're unsure if the notebook PC has CardBus slots, AmbiCom
      provides the CBFIND.EXE utility to help you. CBFIND.EXE, is a WIN32
      based program running on Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, used to identify
      if CardBus slots are in the notebook PC. CBFIND.EXE can be found in
      A:\UTILS. After running CBFIND.EXE, if you want to install the AmbiCom
      10/100 Ethernet CardBus PC Card driver for Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0,
      you need to shutdown and restart the computer before installing the new
      driver.

   2) Connect one end of the PC Card Cable to AmbiCom 10/100 Ethernet CardBus
      PC Card and another end to the twisted-pair cable (not included in the
      product package) connected to the network.

   3) Please refer to the Section 6 Quick Reference Guide in this file
      for installation.

5. Machine Specific Notes
   ======================

AmbiCom has done a tremendous amount of detailed work to ensure that our PC
Cards are compatible with the widest range of notebook PCs possible. Since
Windows NT 3.51, 4.0, NetWare ODI in MS-DOS and other platforms using NDIS 2
drivers does not automatically support CardBus PC Card, the AmbiCom 10/100
Ethernet CardBus PC Card comes with all the drivers needed to support the
above-mentioned platforms. The default IRQ setting is 10. However, for the
notebook PCs listed below, IRQ should be set as follows:

	   a) Micron Transport XPE: 5
	   b) AcerNote Light383:    9
	   c) Chicony 9780:         5, 7, or 9
	   d) Featron 8850:         9
	   e) FIC StepNote SE:      11

   1) For Toshiba notebook PCs with CardBus support, make sure the BIOS is set
      to CardBus mode before installing any drivers for different OS
      platforms. Reboot the machine into MS-DOS mode. At the DOS prompt, run
      the Toshiba setup program TSETUP, inside the program menu, find an item
      titled "PC Card Controller Mode", press space bar to change the mode to
      CardBus/16-bit if the mode is set to PCIC Compatible.

    2) For AcerNote Light, to enable CardBus Support, go to System Security in
       BIOS setup and set to ENABLE.

    3) To install/run any drivers/programs in MS-DOS mode, make sure
       Plug and Play O/S in BIOS in the machine is set to NO as in the
       Gateway 2000 Solo.

7. Known Limitations
   ==================

      a. If you double click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon from Control Panel
         window when a PC card is used at the same time as the AMB8100 CardBus
         PC Card in Windows NT 4.0, you will see the status of the PC Card on
	 one socket and a RED cross mark on the other socket for the AMB8100.
	 This is a limition of Windows NT 4.0 because it can only support
	 Plug-and-Play for 16-bit PC Cards, so it cannot detect any 32-bit
	 CardBus PC Cards.

      b. If you are running Windows 95 OSR2 (950B or 950C) or Windows 98,
         you can use the AmbiCom 10/100 Ethernet CardBus PC Card with a second
         PC Card in your notebook PC.
	 However, since some other operating systems do not support this
	 feature, you can only use the PC Card by itself for now.

      c. Hot-swapping for CardWizard for NT does not work yet at the time of
	 this release. A newer driver will be posted on the web site whenever
	 it is ready.
