Export Module for Adobe Photoshop Software
and Kodak Digital Science Calibration Utility
for Microsoft Windows

For Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, and Windows NT 
Server 4.0 configurations, do the following to install the
export module:
1.) Run SETUP.EXE from the installation disk.  

2.) The setup program prompts you for the location of Photoshop's
    plugins directory. Use the default, or specify a new location
    if your copy of Photoshop is installed in a different
    directory.

3.) The installation program copies the export module into the
    plugins directory along with the help file KDK8657.HLP.
    The media file(s) are copied into a newly created MEDFILES
    directory.  A RGBTABL directory is created from the Photoshop 
    plugins directory, and the supplied printer tables are copied 
    into it.

4.) After the installation completes, start Photoshop and open a 
    file.  Make sure a printer is connected to an LPT port or an 
    Adaptec SCSI host adapter.  Select "Kodak 8657 Printer..." 
    under the FILE-EXPORT menu.

5.) The first time you use the export module, it asks which
    media file to use.  Locate and pick the media file for the
    particular ribbon loaded in your printer.  It then informs
    you that the default port LPT1 has been selected and
    displays the export dialog box.

  Using a Network Printer with Windows 95 
-------------------------------------------
To export an image to a network printer, do the following steps: 

1.) Create a printer queue on a network server for
    each Kodak 8657 printer used over the network.

2.) Each PC with Windows 95 must contain the queue name in its 
    connectivity list.
     a. Go to Control Panels.
     b. Click Printers.
     c. Click Add Printer.
     d. Click NEXT>>.  Choose Network Printer.  Click NEXT>>.
     e. Type in the queue name created in step 1. 
          Example:  \\OurServer\NetPrinter1
          You may click the BROWSE button to locate it.
     f. Click NEXT>>, and pick any printer driver.  Even though
        the printer does not use a printer driver, one must be
        selected to get the queue name into the Windows 95 
        connectivity list.  Click NEXT>>.
     g. Type in a suitable printer name, and click NEXT>>.
     h. Choose "No" for printing a test print.  Click FINISH.

3.) Once Windows 95 has the printer queue in its connectivity
    list, the export module must be told to use it.
     a. Start Photoshop, open an image, and bring up the export

        module
     b. Click SELECT to open the Select Printer dialog box.
     c. Click NETWORK, and type in the queue name you created in 
        step 1.

Now all exported images will be sent to the network queue.  To
export an image locally again, click SELECT to open the Select
Printer dialog box, and choose the LPT or SCSI port the printer
is connected to.

  Using a Network Printer with
  Windows NT Workstation 4.0
  and Windows NT Server 4.0     
--------------------------------
Note: This export module was tested using TCP/IP protocol
between the client workstation, the NT server, and the printer.
Other protocols may work as well.  For configuration details, 
refer to the "KODAK Network Interface Card User Guide" 
(PN4B9863, v1.3) which may be obtained at the following
internet address:

To export an image to a network printer, do the following steps:

    each Kodak 8657 printer used over the network.

2.) Each PC with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT 
    Server 4.0 must contain the queue name in its

     d. Choose Network printer server.  Click NEXT>>.
     e. Type in the queue name created in step 1. 
          Example:  \\OurServer\NetPrinter1
          You may locate the printer queue using the
          browse window.  Click OK.
     f. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0 
        will warn that a suitable printer driver is not
        installed.  Click OK, and pick any printer driver.
        (Even though the printer does not use a printer driver, 
        select one to get the queue name into the Windows 
        connectivity list.) 
     g. Click FINISH.

3.) Once Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0
    have the printer queue in their connectivity list, the export
    module must be told to use it.
     a. Start Photoshop, open an image, and bring up the export
        module.
     b. Click SELECT to open the Select Printer dialog box.
     c. Click NETWORK, and type in the queue name created in 
        step 1.

Now all exported images will be sent to the network queue.  To
export an image locally again, click SELECT to open the Select
Printer dialog box, and choose the LPT or SCSI port the printer
is connected to.

  Maximum Host Adapters
-------------------------
Up to three host adapter cards (HACs) are supported by the export.
If more than three are installed, only the first three lowest
addressed cards are accessible.

  Reprints
------------
Page Size:
    When you use the reprint buffer, the printer remembers 
    the paper size and type required for the original print.
    If you changed the paper size or type after the original
    and then make a Reprint, the printer will require the 
    original size paper be loaded before the image will print.

Printer Tables:
    Reprints can be made using different printer tables.
    However, if the printer table is set to 'None' during a
    reprint, the table from the previous job will be used again.
    If this is not desired, print the original job with the
    printer table set to None, and then apply different tables
    using the reprint feature.

  Printing in Black and White using a color ribbon
----------------------------------------------------
Grayscale images require a black ribbon in the printer.
However, by converting the image to RGB mode in Photoshop, 
(select MODE->RGB COLOR) it can be printed using a color ribbon.

  Canceling Jobs
------------------
To cancel a job quickly, hold down the ESC key on your PC.  The
cancel button on the printer's front panel waits until the whole
job is received before actually canceling.

  Export module does not
  show up in Photoshop
--------------------------
The installer may have been unable to determine the location of
your Photoshop plugins directory.  This occurs when you use
versions of Photoshop earlier than 3.0.5.  To correct the
problem, upgrade to Photoshop 3.0.5 and run the export
module setup program again.  Be sure to verify that the
plugin path is correct when you are asked where to install the
module.  (Usually it is C:\PHOTOSHP\PLUGINS.)  If not, use the 
BROWSE button to locate the plugins directory manually.

  SCSI support with Windows NT Systems
----------------------------------------
If you are experiencing problems using SCSI with Windows NT
systems, make sure that the following items are in place:

1.) Your NT system should be equipped with an Adaptec 1542 or
    2940 SCSI host adapter.

2.) ASPI drivers must be installed.  These drivers may be
    obtained by downloading ASPI32.EXE from 
        http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/upgrades.html

    Once ASPI32.EXE has been downloaded, double-click it and
    follow the prompts.

NOTE: The listed internet addresses were valid at the time of
      this software release, but they may change in the future.
      If you have trouble accessing them, go to

      and start searching from there.

  SCSI printer not showing up
  in the selection dialog box
-------------------------------
Check the Host Adapter selection in the lower right corner of
the selection dialog box.  If other adapter numbers are present,
try using one of them.

If the printer still does not show up on SCSI, turn off the
printer and the PC, and then turn on the printer first.  After the
printer displays "READY-RASTER" on its front panel, turn on the PC.

  "8650" displayed in SCSI list 
  for the selection dialog box
---------------------------------
The 8657 printer reports itself as an 8650 on the SCSI bus, and
will show up as such in the selection dialog box and the status
dialog box.  Choose it as your printer.  If both an 8657 and an
8650 printer are connected to the SCSI bus, the 8657 can still be
distinguished since it will always report 7.5 x 8 inch media.

NOTE: If an 8650 printer is accidentally selected and a print from
    the 8657 export module is sent, the job will be processed and
    the front panel of the 8650 will request 7.5 x 8 inch media.
    Simply cancel the job from the printer's front panel, and select
    an 8657 printer the next time.

  PC locks up when a printer
  is connected over SCSI
------------------------------
The SCSI bus must be terminated properly.  A terminator 
must be present on the devices at  both ends of the bus.
Typically, the SCSI card is terminated itself, and a single
terminator is needed on the last device connected.  However, if
your PC has an internal SCSI hard drive, the drive is usually
terminated as well.  In this case, refer to the documentation
included with your SCSI card for disabling its termination.

Make sure that the SCSI ID of the printer is not used by
another SCSI device.  Each device must have a different ID.

  The application is quiting unexpectedly
-------------------------------------------
The application using the 8657 export module may quit
unexpectedly when the export module is setup to use
the SCSI port.  If this happens, the ASPI drivers installed
on you PC are probably too old.  Download the latest 
ASPI drivers from Adaptec's Web site.  (Version 4.57 or later.)
For more information on downloading these drivers, refer to the
section "SCSI support with Windows NT Systems" in this file.

  New Hardware Found dialog box displays
  when Windows 95 starts up
------------------------------------------
If the New Hardware Found dialog box displays by Windows 95
the first time your PC is restarted with an active Kodak printer
attached to the SCSI port, choose NEXT to let Windows search
for a driver, and then choose FINISH after Windows is unable
to find a driver.  (The printer utilizes a Photoshop export 
module rather than a SCSI driver.)

  SCSI printer is not
  automatically selected
--------------------------
If your SCSI printer is not automatically selected after
the export module is first installed, click SELECT in the
export module dialog box, and pick your SCSI printer.


--------------------------
  Printer does not print
--------------------------
The printer will not print under the following circumstances:
  1. If the job was printed by selecting FILE->PRINT in
     Photoshop, it will not print while the printer is in Raster
     mode.  
     You must select "FILE->EXPORT->KODAK 8657 PRINTER..."

  2. Jobs scaled smaller than 5 pixels in height or width will
     not print.  Increase the scale factor by small amounts
     until the job prints.

  3. When used over Parallel on systems running Windows NT, be
     sure a printer is connected and turned on.  The export module
     may not be able to detect if a printer is ready under Windows NT,
     and will always send the job.  If the printer is not ready, 
     Windows NT will display a "device not responding" dialog box
     anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute later.

  Printer ejects a page during
  the middle of a job with 
  Windows 95 and a parallel port
----------------------------------
If the printer consistently stops printing and ejects the
page before completing the job, the parallel port on your
system may be sending the data faster than the printer can
process it.  To correct the problem, do the following steps:
  1. In Windows Explorer, use the right mouse button to select
     the Lpt.vxd file in the Windows\System folder, and then
     click Rename on the menu that displays.

  2. Rename the Lpt.vxd file to Lpt.xxx.

  3. Drag the Lpt.vxd file from the Drivers\Printer\Lpt folder
     on the Windows 95 CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder on
     your hard disk.

  4. Restart Windows 95.

Note: If you do not have Windows 95 on CD-ROM, Lpt.vxd may be 
obtained from Microsoft Windows 95 Service Pack 1.

Note: To undo the above change, delete the Lpt.vxd file and
rename Lpt.xxx back to Lpt.vxd.

  "Unhandled MFC Exception" and      
  "Unable to open session with printer"
   error messages display
-----------------------------------------
If one of the above error messages displays without reason, 
the preferences file (C:\WINDOWS\KDK8657.PRF) may have
become corrupt.  Delete it manually, or install the export
module software again.


------------------------------
  XtraLife checkbox disabled
------------------------------
XtraLife will always be disabled for reprints.


--------------------------------
  Scaling problem when opening
  the export module
--------------------------------
You may get a scaling error message when you open the export
module if your previously printed image was large and scaled to
a large value as well.  If this occurs, click OK on the error
message and make sure the scale factor is set to 100% in the 
export dialog box.  


----------------------------------
  Unable to print over a network
----------------------------------
A queue name must be established by your network administrator
for the Kodak 8657 printer, and the steps involved depend on the
type of network used.  The export module was tested using
a Novell Netware Server with an IPX print queue.  Other networks
should work as well, as long as a queue name is associated with
the printer.

If a queue name has been established and problems still occur, be
sure spooling is enabled.  Printing directly to the printer may 
cause 'timeout' or 'exception' errors, particularly with larger
jobs.  Spooling print jobs should eliminate these errors.

Note: These tips are relevant only when using the Kodak 
      calibration utility software.

  CANCEL button does not
  undo media file selection
-----------------------------
Clicking CANCEL in the Printer Setup for Calibration dialog box
does not undo the selection of a new media file.  If the wrong
file is selected, select another file using the SELECT button.


----------------------------
  SEND&PRINT over parallel
----------------------------
If you are experiencing problems during the SEND&PRINT operation
while connected via parallel, make sure the printer displays "READY" 
on its front panel for at least five seconds before you click 
PRINT in the final dialog box.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
