No warning for page size and ribbon size incompatibility -------------------------------------------------------- Driver does not display an error message if you select a page size it conflicts with the size of the installed ribbon. For example, you can select a page size of 8X12 when the printer has only short (10 inch) ribbon, even though trying to print with this combination will produce an error during printing. No error message displayed when encountering printing problems -------------------------------------------------------------- If you use the "Fast User Switching" facility in Windows XP any errors that occur during printing may not be displayed in a message box. The only user who will see any error messages will be the one who logged onto the system first. Loss of communication if the USB cable is disconnected ------------------------------------------------------ If you disconnect the USB cable during printing and then reconnect it, the printing operation will not pick up where it left off (i.e., on the next page, or on the next job). In addition, you may need to reboot the operating system and power cycle the printer to re-establish communications. My borderless prints print with a thin white border --------------------------------------------------- See the Driver Tips section on Printing Borderless Pictures. ******************************************************************* * * * D R I V E R T I P S * * * ******************************************************************* Changing the picture used in the 'Adjust Color' preview windows --------------------------------------------------------------- If the picture used in the 'Adjust Color' preview windows does not suit your needs you can change it to one more specific to your needs. The picture must be a valid BMP file, preferably less than 500KB. Optimally the picture should be 168 x 183 pixels (width x height) although the software will scale the picture to use as much of the window as possible. There are two ways to change the default picture to use your own. 1) Rename your picture to EK9810_preview.bmp and copy it into c:\"windows directory"\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3. Unless you save a copy of the file this operation will overwrite the original picture. 2) Copy your BMP file (with whatever file name you choose) into c:\"windows directory"\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3. Edit EK9810.ini in the same directory so that the "File" keyword in the "Image Preview" section points to your file name. Only include the actual file name and not the path. Printing Bordered Pictures ========================== The printer creates 1/4 inch (75 pixel) borders on all page sizes. The imageable area in pixels for bordered printing follows: Page size Imageable Area =============== ============== 8 x 10 (EK9810) 2250 X 2850 8 X 12 (EK9810) 2250 X 2450 You do not need nor want to make the oversize image considerations for bordered printing that you need to make for borderless printing (See Printing Borderless Pictures). Printing Borderless Pictures ============================ All printers have difficulties making borderless prints that exactly equal the physical size of the the paper they use. Paper can track through the printing system in a way that misses one or more pixels on the edges of the paper. When this occurs, an unwanted thin white border can print on some edges of the borderless print. The KODAK PROFESSIONAL 9810 Digital Photo Printer solves this problem by making the print head (and the image area of the page) slightly larger than the page size. In this way, a slight tracking error through the printer will still allow printing at the extra wide print head without causing a thin border. However, this feature works only when the application provides the printer with a slightly larger image than the page size. You can find out how large an image to send to the printer for borderless printing by going to the Printers dialog in Control Panel and select File->Server Properties. In the Forms tab of the Print Server Properties dialog you can find the following page sizes: 8 x 10 (EK9810) 8 x 12 (Ek9810) Select the page sizes and look at the measurements information displayed by the Form tab. This tab displays the printer's the image sizes in inches or metric units. For example the 8x10 page size shows its true image size as 8.21 x 10.08 inches or 20.85 x 25.60 cm. Generally, for most image printing applications you ' want to know the image size in pixels. The printer supports one resolution: 300 DPI. As a result, while 8 inch wide paper requires 8 x 300 or 2400 pixels, the printer requests 2464 wide images on 8 inch paper (32 pixels extra on either side of center). On 10 inch long prints, the paper requires 3000 pixels for height, but the printer requests 3024 pixels (12 extra pixels top and bottom). On 12 inch long prints, the paper requires 3600 pixels, but the printer requests 3624 pixels (again, 12 extra pixels top and bottom). If you use an application like Adobe Photoshop to print your images, and you make 8X10 images that have exactly 2400 x 3000 pixels, Photoshop, depending on your settings and the version of Photoshop, might center your smaller image in a white background of the size the printer requests. This can defeat the purpose of the printer's larger page size and cause the production of thin, white borders. As a general rule, you should use the following pixel sizes for borderless printing of 8 x 10 and 8 x 12 images: 8 x 10 2464 x 3024 8 x 12 2464 x 3624 You can use fewer pixels left and right and top and bottom in your applications, but to prevent thin white borders on borderless prints, you must always use a few more pixels left and right and top and bottom than the exact size of the paper. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (c) 2005 Eastman Kodak Company.
