3.0 Contents of the CD
======================

The KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 TWAIN Data Source installer is on your installation CD in the form of one folder "Disk1".

The user manual is included on the CD in the folder called Manuals.
Along with the manual is Acrobat Reader installer.
After installing Acrobat Reader, you must reboot your machine for the Reader to function properly.

WINDOWS 98 / WINDOWS NT 4.0 INFORMATION:

The scanner should be connected to the computer prior to booting so that Windows 98 / Windows NT will be able to access the scanner.

If the scanner was not on at the time of boot-up it will be necessary to power ON the scanner and reboot the computer in order for it to be seen by the Data Source.

WINDOWS 2000 INFORMATION:

Adaptec does not support the ASPI layer on Windows 2000 and Windows Me, however, testing suggests the ASPI layer can be installed on Windows Me and Windows 2000 to support the Kodak Professional Thermal Printers and RFS scanners. Testing was done only for the Kodak Professional 8650 Thermal Printers, Kodak Professional 8660 Thermal Printers and Kodak Professional RFS Film Scanners; other SCSI devices were not tested. If you choose this solution, be aware that conflicts may arise if any other SCSI device is added to your computer.

Installation process for Windows 2000, Windows Me and Windows XP Professional:

Run the ASPICHK.EXE from Adaptec and verify that you do not have some sort of ASPI layer installed and running:

   ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

If you have an ASPI layer and it is operating, you are all set. If you do not have an ASPI layer or it is not operating, get ASPI32.EXE from Adaptec and run it:

   ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi32.exe

Note: It is recommended that if you have Adaptec CD Creator or Windows Media Player 7.1 installed that you do not upgrade your ASPI layer. You should reinstall these applications to reestablish your ASPI layer.

WINDOWS XP INFORMATION:

WINDOWS XP Professional - The RFS 3570 Plus TWAIN Data Source software has been qualified to work on systems that have either an upgrade, a new or a full version of WINDOWS XP Professional. The installation of the TWAIN Data Source software must be done by your system administrator.

WINDOWS XP Home Edition - The RFS 3570 Plus TWAIN Data Source software has been qualified on systems that have a new or a full version of WINDOWS XP Home Edition. You CANNOT use the RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner on a system that used the Upgrade option to install Windows XP Home Edition.

If the SCSI host adapter that you are using supports a SCSI transfer rate greater than 10MB per second slow it down to 10MB per second for the scanners SCSI ID.

===============================
6.0 New Features / Enhancements
===============================
V1.4
1) Error_No Error message on Windows (PC) platforms has been virtually eliminated.

2) Improved focus positioning algorithm has been implemented for optimum sharpness. If optimum focus is not determined by the scanner, focus position will be set to the last good focus position found.

3) Added more sharpening level selections for finer sharpening adjustments.

4) New prompt to remind you that your displayed image does not match your current settings.

5) NEW! Enhanced Optical Magnification, with increases in magnification and speed of viewing magnification changes. You can now view magnification changes without forcing a recalibration. Users can change the magnification slider and select "View Changes" for each mag change without incurring a recalibration step. A subsequent "Prescan", or "Scan" will force a recalibration to occur if it is needed.

V1.3
1) Optimized film terms for improved first time scans.

2) NEW! Cropped autobalance feature for autobalance within a crop region.

3) New "Custom" Ektacolor PPN film term designed for custom over-exposures.

4) New algorithm feature to remove "red pixel" and column defects.

5) Two modified film terms for the Professional Portrait market:
	-Kodak Portra_KPro
	-Vericolor III VPS_KPro
These films are specifically tuned to provide warmer skin tones for portrait and studio photographers.

==============
7.0 Known Bugs
==============

1) Windows 2000 users: Each time your computer is powered up the Hardware Wizard will appear stating that a new hardware device is found and you will need to install the software drivers for the hardware. Once the software is loaded on to your machine you will NOT have to go through the software installation process again. Simply cancel the Hardware Wizard dialog menus and continue. As long as your computer remains powered on you will not see the Harware Wizard dialog messages. Each time you power on your computer you will have to dismiss the Wizard and continue on with your normal operation.

2) At certain magnifications and moving the brightness slider to compensate for the darker image, selecting autobalance changes the "color" of the scan.

3) If the user chooses a name for a custom film term larger than the Film selection field, some anomalies will appear on the interface when this film term is selected.

4) Slight difference between preview and final scan for over/under exposed images.

5) CAUTION!! P.C. SCSI HARD DRIVE PROBLEM:
If you are using the KODAK PROFESSIONAL RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner TWAIN compliant Data Source with an IBM or compatible computer you MUST NOT connect a SCSI disk drive to the same SCSI adapter board which the RFS 3570 Plus Film Scanner is attached to. For example if you have an Adaptec card with your SCSI boot drive attached to it, you must install a second Adaptec card.

The RFS TWAIN Data Source has not been tested with :

Windows XP Professional Upgrade
Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade

==========================
8.0 RFS 3570 Plus Features
==========================

"CROPPED AUTOBALANCE" FEATURE:

The cropped area autobalance is calculated only on the crop area and will NOT be applied to the whole image if the crop area is "de-selected". Users must scan using the crop area for the autobalance to be applied correctly.

How to use the autobalance or cropped autobalance function:

Each time you change the selection on the preview window, the image path calculations change. Thus, each time the crop area is changed, you have to select "view changes" to see what your final image will look like.

================
9.0 Installation
================

To install the KODAK RFS3570 TWAIN Data Source place the CD into your CDROM drive. The CD is set up to automatically run Disk1\Setup.exe. If the autorun capability fails for some reason, click Start and choose Run. At the prompt enter the following:

	D:\Disk1\Setup.exe

where D is the CDROM drive letter. You can also navigate to the installation CD, disk1 folder, and double click on the Setup.exe file.

If the installation files are copied from the CD to a network drive, the installation may fail with the message "The parameter is incorrect." if the network path to the installation directory is too long. This problem can be resolved by moving the installation directory to a location with a shorter network path.

Turn on the Scanner, and then turn on the PC. The action of this and the previous step ensures that the Scanner will be operating with the latest version of its 'firmware' (internal operating instructions).

==================================
10.0 Electronic Access of Upgrades
==================================

When Kodak prepares updated versions of the software Data Sources for the scanner, it makes those updates available electronically on a public ftp server. Downloading an update from this network is the quickest way to obtain the most current Data Source. You receive the Data Source directly, in a timely fashion, at your convenience.

Downloading the Data Source or film terms requires access to the internet. Communication software and internet access are not supplied by Kodak.

1) Via the World Wide Web at
"http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/software/rfs/navigation.shtml"

This page contains links to Data Source listings by product type.
We encourage you to visit our software Data Source web site on a regular basis.

Once you have obtained a Data Source, continue at "Installing the Software Driver" in the RFS 3570 Plus scanner manual, Appendix F.

============================
11.0 Operational Information
============================

Note: If you have anything other than the Calibration Mask in the RFS 3570 Plus scanner on initial calibration, the scanner may not be able to focus. If this occurs you must power the scanner off for 15 seconds then insert the Calibration Mask and turn the scanner on to recalibrate.

FIX FOR BUBBLES / DIMPLES
	This Data Source contains a button called "Recalibrate". If you experience image artifacts which appear to look like bubbles, dimples, or blisters, this button will significantly reduce their appearance. This symptom is due to dust particles which have collected on the surface of the diffuser glass. If you experience these symptoms, please follow this procedure:

	1.Focus the image at the desired format and magnification
	2.Click on the RECALIBRATE button
	3.Remove the film and holder from the film gate
	4.Insert the CALIBRATION MASK
	5.Click on OK (the scanner will calibrate)
	6."Please Wait Calibration in Process......" message appears
	7."Calibration Complete....." message appears
	8.Place the film and holder back in the film gate
	9.Click on OK (clicking on FOCUS is optional but not recommended)
	10.Select SCAN to complete the image capture

This procedure should only be necessary once except under the following conditions:

A.The film format changes i.e. 35mm, 46mm, 120mm, etc.
B.The magnification changes i.e. slider value -20% to +20%
C.Presence of "new" dust introduced during the process of scanning

The Magnification Adjustment of -1 thru -20 will have no effect at the 70 mm Film Size setting.

Due to mechanical tolerances it may not be possible to see all four sides of 70 mm film. If you must see a portion that is not visible in the PreScan, you can move the film or rotate it 180 degrees.

Changing between the Film Size settings of 6 x 4.5, 6 x 6, 6 x 7, and 6 x 9 will not cause the scanner to recalibrate since no change in the magnification optics occurs.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION TIPS:

SCANNING BLACK & WHITE FILMS:
We recommend users select the B&W check box in the TWAIN Data Source dialog when scanning Black & White films to scan a true gray scale image. If three color image data is desired, make this change in the Photoshop application program.

AUTOBALANCE:
When scanning color transparency films, such as KODAK EKTACHROME, it is recommended that the user scan with the Autobalance option unchecked (off). Any density or color differences that need to be corrected can effectively be made with the RGB, Contrast and Brightness slider controls. This will allow the scanner to acquire the image as is without unnecessary alteration. If the image is severely over- or under-exposed, or has a pronounced color cast, Autobalance ON may be helpful in producing a better image. Again, the user may find that using the slider controls will yield better overall results.
When scanning color negative films, it is recommended that the user scan with the Autobalance option checked.

CLICK WHITE RECOMMENDATION:
The CLICK WHITE Balance feature works best in neutral areas. Areas that are shadow white leaning towards white, gray or areas that are neutral in color should be selected (RGB values of 80-200). If the area selected is saturated or very dark the CLICK WHITE Balance option will not give optimal color balance.
