Technical Support ========================================================================== 1. General Instructions As with almost any hardware installation, you should be familiar with certain aspects of your computer. Specifically, you should know which devices are already installed in your machine, as well as any resources that they occupy. The leading cause of all installation headaches is specifying a resource that is not available or in use by some other piece of hardware. Also, if you have Card and/or Socket Services installed, please ensure that they are configured properly. The second leading cause of most installation headaches is software interfering with new hardware. Lastly, please read the manual(s) included with your new Trumpcard before beginning installation. ========================================================================== 2. Windows 95 Installation Ositech Communications is proud be one of the first network card manufacturers in the world to provide NDIS4 driver support to their valued customers. NDIS4 drivers are more robust and better performing than the older NDIS3 standard drivers. Unfortunately, NDIS4 drivers are not compatible with all versions of Windows 95. NDIS4 support was introduced in Windows 95 OSR2 (also known as Windows 95B). To find out which version of Windows 95 you are using, open a DOS box and issue the VER command. Windows 95 will now return its version number. "Windows 95 [Version 4.00.950]" means that you are running an earlier version of Windows. You can ONLY use NDIS3 drivers. If any other version is displayed (i.e. "Windows 95 [Version 4.00.1111]") then you can use the NDIS4 drivers or the NDIS3 drivers. 2.1 First Time Install First time users can just insert the Four of Diamonds into an available PC Card slot and Windows 95 will detect new hardware. At this point Windows 95 may ask for a driver disk or will begin installing default drivers. To avoid using the default drivers, please run CLEAN_95 BEFORE(!) inserting your Trumpcard into your computer. Once you have run CLEAN_95, you may then insert your Trumpcard. Windows 95 will detect new hardware and then ask for a "Manufacturer's driver diskette". Please point Windows 95 to the location where the drivers are located. If you can use NDIS4 drivers (see above), specify the W95_OSR2 directory. If you can only use (or want to use) NDIS3 drivers, specify the WIN95 directory. 2.2 Upgrading From Previous Drivers Remove any previously installed Ositech Trumpcards from the Control Panel/System/Network Adapters. Then run the CLEAN_95.exe program found in the CLEANUP directory. The CLEAN_95 program will run a uitlity that removes all Ositech Trumpcard Windows 95 .INF files and registry entries. Please follow the onscreen prompts. This will allow you to perform a clean installation of your Trumpcard. After running the CLEAN_95 program, when you insert your Trumpcard, Windows 95 will ask you for a "Manufacturer's supplied disk". Please point Windows 95 to the location where the drivers are located. If you can use NDIS4 drivers (see above), specify the A:\W95_OSR2 directory. If you can only use (or want to use) NDIS3 drivers, specify the A:\WIN95 directory. ========================================================================== 3. Windows NT Installation The Windows NT drivers for the Four of Diamonds are located on the "Network Drivers" diskette. For Windows NT 3.51, open the "Main" program group, double click on the "Control Panel" icon and open the "Network" option. If you do not have NT Networking installed, you will need to install it now. When you are asked to select a network adapter choose "<other>" and then insert the "Network Drivers" diskette and specify the location of the drivers as A:\WINNT. Then, when the Trumpcard Configuration screen appears, please provide available resources (IRQ, I/O Port, etc.) for the Four of Diamonds. Now follow all onscreen instructions to complete the installation of the Four of Diamonds Trumpcard. For Windows NT 4.0, click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings" and then open the "Control Panel". Now double click on the "Network" icon. If NT Networking is not installed, you will be prompted to install it now. From the "Adapters" tab, click on the "add" button. When NT provides a list to choose from, click on the "Have Disk" button and then insert the "Network Drivers" diskette into the floppy drive and provide the location of the driver as A:\WINNT. When the Trumpcard Configuration screen appears, please provide available resources (IRQ, I/O Port, etc.) for the Four of Diamonds. Now follow all onscreen instructions to complete the installation of the Four of Diamonds Trumpcard. ========================================================================== 4. Windows 3.1x / Windows for Workgroups 3.1x Installation Please install the Trumpcard software by running the SETUP.exe file found on this diskette. The program will copy over files and once it is done, it will run the configuration program. This program must be run in order for you to fully benefit from the advanced features of the Four of Diamonds. At the configuration screen you will be able to setup your environment, including: specifying the hardware resources (i.e. interrupts (IRQs), I/O addresses (PORTs) and memory windows that the Trumpcard will require, as well as selecting the type of network driver you will require. You will also be able to further define your network requirements by choosing/selecting: frame types, MaxTransmits, media type, etc. Please see your network administrator for more information on these settings. Ositech installs Novell's NetWare Client for DOS/Windows if you choose either of the ODI network driver selections. If you choose any of the Windows NDIS network selections, Windows will install its client software (included with Windows) when you install the network support in Windows. For all other network selections you will need to install the client software and then tell the client installation to copy the driver from the "Network Drivers" diskette. PLEASE NOTE !!!!!!!!!!! The ODI driver supplied requires a special switch in the NET.cfg file (usually located in your NetWare Client directory). The switch is "ERX 0". This switch should be placed in the "Link Driver OTCETH" section and MUST be indented AT LEAST 1 (one) space in. Your NET.cfg should look like the following: Link Driver OTCETH ERX 0 {any other parameters} {any other sections} This switch will prevent Windows for Workgroups from "hanging" when using the Ositech ODI driver. When you use the Trumpcard Configuration Program this switch is placed into the NET.cfg file automatically. Otherwise, you must add this switch. The configuration program will also modify your CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.bat, SYSTEM.ini, WIN.ini and PROTOCOL.ini files to reflect your choices. The original files are saved with the extension .ot0. The installation program also gives the option to "de-install" the Trumpcard software and it uses these backed-up files to restore your original configuration. In Program Manager there will be a new group containing icons for the configuration program and the on-line help. If you need to make changes to your configuration, just double click on the configuration program icon. ========================================================================== 5. DOS Installation (Not a DOS Box) There is no automated DOS installation provided with this version of the Four of Diamonds software. All DOS drivers should be installed using the Windows 3.x installation program (See # 4 above). Advanced users may try to manually install drivers, but this is not advisable. The 32-bit ODI driver/Netware Server driver, OTCETH.lan must be manually installed. Instructions are provided in the \NETWARE\NWSERVER directory, found on the "Network Drivers" disk. ========================================================================== 6. Other Operating Systems (SCO Unix, UnixWare, OS/2 etc.) For other operating systems supported by this Trumpcard, please see the diskette corresponding to that OS (i.e. for SCO Unix and/or UnixWare please see the "SCO Unix and UnixWare Drivers" diskette, for the Macintosh please see the "Macintosh Installation and Drivers Diskette" etc.) These diskettes are not included in all Four of Diamonds packaging. Therefore, if you have purchased a Four of Diamonds which does not have these disks, please download copies of these disks from Ositech's 24-hour Customer Support Sites. For locations of these sites, please see the Technical Support Section (section 8) below. ========================================================================== 7. Trumpcard Diagnostics Ositech Communications supplies a comprehensive diagnostics tool for your new Four of Diamonds Trumpcard. If you ever experience a problem with your Trumpcard, please run the program 4ODDIAG.exe from the root directory of the "Installation and Diagnostics" diskette. This program will help you solve almost any problem that you may have with your Trumpcard. Please note that this program must be run in a "CLEAN" DOS environment or from Windows 95's "Safe Mode, Command Prompt Only". To get to a "CLEAN" DOS prompt, press F5 when you see the "Starting MS-DOS..." message or use a boot disk with no config.sys or autoexec.bat. To get to Windows 95's "Safe Mode, Command Prompt Only", press F8 when you see the "Starting Windows 95..." message. Then choose the "Safe Mode, Command Prompt Only" option. Please run the diagnostics program BEFORE calling Technical Support, as it will help you solve most problems. ========================================================================== 8.
