                          Issue No : UM-8038TXD3A-00
                          Date : 1998.02.23

                                  Overview

The 10/100Mbps PCI Fast Ethernet Card is a PCI Local Bus based network
adapter . Featuring a high data transmission rate of 100 Mbps on a 100Base-TX
network , it conforms to the IEEE 802.3 10Base-T and 802.3u 100Base-TX standards.

By using a single-chip bus master , the card can minimize the processor involvement
in the controller operation during normal reception and transmission . To minimize
the host CPU utilization and the bus traffic , the received runt frames are
filtered and the collided frames are automatically retransmitted without a
repeated fetch from the PCI memory .

  The card is a dual-speed adapter with a single auto-sensing 10/100Mbps RJ-45
connector . Either UTP or STP can be used for connection to a 10Base-T or 100
Base-TX network . The speed is determined by the kind of hub the card is connected to.

For various network operating systems, such as Novell NetWare, Personal NetWare
, Artisoft LANtastic , Microsoft LAN Manager , Windows 95/NT , Windows for Workgroups
, and IBM LAN Server , an extensive network driver library which includes an NDIS driver
, and SCO UNIX driver is available .

                            Installing Boot ROM

The optional boot ROM can be purchased separately for cards with a Boot ROM
socket. Before executing any remote boot function, a boot ROM should be
installed into the ROM socket on the card. Beware that the notch on the ROM
should be carefully aligned with that on the socket in the same direction .

                            Inserting the Card

To insert the adapter into the computer, you should :

1.Power off your computer and disconnect all cables attached to the main
  system unit .
2.Remove the case of the computer and choose any available PCI expansion
  slot .
3.Insert the card to that slot .
4.Restore the case of the computer and reconnect the cables being previously
  disconnected .

*****************************************************************************************

                          Connecting to the Network

When you finish setting up your card, you can connect to the 10Base-T or 100Base-TX
network . The 10/100Mbps PCI Fast Ethernet Card provides a single auto-sensing
RJ-45 connector on the backplate . It automatcally detects and switches to the
network speed to which it is connected .

For 10Base-T networks, the card use Category 3 , 4 or 5 shielded or unshielded
twisted-pair (STP/UTP) cables . For 100Base-TX networks , the card uses Category
5 shielded or unshielded twisted-pair (STP/UTP) cables .

Make sure that you are using the appropriate cables for 10Base-T or 100Base-TX
connection.
