1. logged in as root, edit /etc/conf.modules, and add a line saying
"alias eth0 rtl8139"
2. either load the RTL8139 module immediately by hand (modprobe rtl8139)
or restart the machine (shutdown -r now) which will automatically load
it
3. configure the card as you would any other (e.g. start X windows and
click on the Network icon).

The RTL8139 cards that I have installed under RedHat Linux 5.1 and 5.2
(kernel versions 2.0.34 and 2.0.36 respectively) work flawlessly in both
10 and 100Mb/s networks.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
