IBM drive FW rev 3636 for 2GB DFHSS2F & 4GB DFHSS4F NCR Case Candidate Knowledge Base ID#: DAYH010001C5B2 Peripherals Procedure Short Description: Download IBM 3636 Firmware To SGI Drives ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Product Category: Peripherals / Disk Arrays Product: 6256, 6299 Non-Confidential ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Procedure: NOTE! This procedure is used to upgrade IBM / SGI disk drive firmware. This procedure applies to IBM drives with an SGI Product ID used in the 6299 and 6256 disk arrays only. The UNIX package "scd" version 1.02.10 or later is required. Exclusive access of the disk array is required. All data bases must be shutdown and all file systems unmounted. CAUTION! This procedure is intended for use by RAID Manager and Disk Array trained personnel. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the disk drives becoming inoperable and all stored data lost. VERIFICATION OF DRIVES STEP #: 1) Enter the UNIX or DOS RAID Manager screens. Select the "ace" utility and determine which LUNs (Logical Units) are associated with each physical rank of array drives. Choose one LUN in each rank and record the device name (example c21t5d4). Exit RAID Manager. 2) From a root prompt type "ncrm" and press "enter." 3) From screen #1 select "tests" and press enter. 4) From screen #2 press F2 (Choices). Using the arrow keys and F2 mark the device names recorded in step #1. Press enter. From screen #2 press F3 (Save). 5) From screen #3 select "tests (n)" and press enter. 6) From screen #4 select "ID Disks" and press F2 (Mark). Press enter. 7) From screen #5 select "run" and press enter. 8) From screen #6 ignore the options and press F3 (Save). 9) The device name accessed is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. Information for each disk drive associated with the LUN is displayed one screen at a time. The individual drive can be identified by the "Channel #." 10) Determine that the displayed drives have a "Vendor ID" of IBM, a "Product ID" of SGI, and a firmware version of 3524. Remove the device names from the list in step 1 that do not match the above criteria. If no drives match the Vendor and Product TD type or the firmware version is current on all drives the process is complete. 11) Press F7 and select "Exit." Press enter. FIRMWARE DOWNLOAD STEP #: 1A) Determine if the disk array is connected on a shared SCSI Bus. If yes, shut one of the host systems down (Init State 0). If no, go to step 2. 2A) Bring the host system to init state "s" (shutdown -is -g0 -y). 3A) Copy the firmware file (imlst23f.bin) to the /tmp directory. 4A) From a root prompt type "ncrm" and press enter. 5A) From screen #1 select "tests" and press enter. 6A) From screen #2 press F2 (Choices). Using the arrow keys and F2 mark the device names recorded in step 10. Press enter. From screen #2 press F3 (Save). 7A) From screen #3 select "tests (d)" and press enter. 8A) From screen #4 select "Disk F/W Download" and press F2 (Mark). Press enter. 9A) From screen #5 select "run" and press enter. 10A) From screen #6 ignore the options and press F3 (Save). 11A) The firmware download started menu screen is now displayed. If there is any doubt about the drives in this LUN use the #1 option to display the drive information again. Select the #2 option and press enter. 12A) Continue the firmware download by entering "y" and press the enter key. Enter the Disk Drive Vendor name (IBM) and press enter. 13A) Enter the Disk Drive Product name (SGI) and press enter. 14A) Enter the full path and file name of the firmware version to download (/tmp/filename) and press enter. Note! If the wrong firmware file is downloaded for the selected Vendor and Product IDs the disks may become nonfunctional and any stored data may be lost. 15A) The firmware will now be downloaded to each drive in the selected LUN that matches the Vendor ID and Product ID entered. An error message will be displayed for each drive in the LUN that does not match the Vendor or Product ID entered. 16A) Repeat this process for all IBM / SGI disks until all drives have been updated with the new firmware. 17A) Use the "tests (n)" function to again display the individual drive information and verify that the firmware has been upgraded on all IBM / SGI disks. 18A) Exit the ncrm utility (F7 and exit) and return the system to init state 3 (multi-user). 19A) Use the UNIX or DOS RAID Manager utilities to check the status of all LUNs associated with the updated drives. All LUNs should display an "optimal" status.
