Procedure for Upgrading Firmware on WangDAT 3100, 3100DX, 3200 and
3400DX Tape Drives
This utility must be run from a DOS command prompt. If a DOS platform
is not available, a bootable floppy disk may be used.
WARNING: KNOW YOUR VERSION OF FIRMWARE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FIRMWARE
DOWNLOAD. ALL DRIVES CANNOT BE UPGRADED TO THE CURRENTLY POSTED
VERSION. ATTEMPTING TO DOWNLOAD AN INCORRECT FIRMWARE VERSION MAY
RENDER THE DRIVE INOPERABLE. IN THIS EVENT, THE DRIVE WOULD HAVE TO
BE SENT TO TECMAR SERVICE TO HAVE THE DRIVE RETURNED TO THE
ORIGINAL FIRMWARE VERSION. STANDARD SERVICE CHARGES WOULD APPLY.
Below is a chart of compatible firmware versions. Please review the
chart before proceeding.

* Tecmar Dat 2000, 4000 and 8000 models with Read/Write/Select
indicator lights should not be upgraded from 2.2 to 2.5. Doing
so will disable the lights.
** Drives with firmware 2.0A cannot be upgraded via the download
file. They must be returned to Tecmar.
# Upgrading to version 2.5 will add a feature that causes both
LED's to flash amber simultaneously when the drive needs to be
cleaned. Cleaning the drive with a cleaning cartridge will reset
the lights.
Before you begin, verify the following:
1. The drive is attached to a SCSI host adapter.
2. A config.sys file is loading which contains a device line pointing
to the correct ASPI driver for the installed host adapter.
Example: for an Adaptec 154x controller, add the following line:
device=c:\apsi4dos.sys /d
The device statement should denote the path to the aspi driver.
3. There is not a tape cartridge in the drive.
NOTE: A POWER LOSS TO THE DRIVE DURING THE UPGRADE PROCEDURE CAN
CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVE.
To Process the Firmware Upgrade:
1. Type the following command:
download xxxxx.dfi n
x's = firmware file name
n = Tape drive SCSI id number
Example - to upgrade firmware on a 3400DX set to SCSI id 4 to
version 5.0J, enter the following at the DOS command
prompt:
download 34FAS50JF.dfi 4
2. The LEDs on the front of drive will display a sequence of flashes.
3. When the upgrade procedure has completed, the LEDs will stop
flashing and the drive will return to a ready state. At this
point, the system should be rebooted to allow the SCSI controller
to recognize the new firmware.
