Overview

This is the Gateway supported integrated Intel Pro/100 VE network driver for Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 98.


Identification

To determine if this is the correct driver to install, check Device Manager.

In Windows XP:

1.  On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.

3.  In Performance and Maintenance, click the System icon.

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

5.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters.

6.  If Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection appears under Network adapters, this is the correct driver.

In Windows 2000:

1.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

4.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters.

5.  If Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection appears under Network adapters, this is the correct driver.

In Windows 98:

1.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.

4.  On the Device Manager tab, double-click Network adapters.

5.  If Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection appears under Network adapters, this is the correct driver.


Installation

In Windows XP:

1.  The files are extracted to C:\cabs\7512318. 

2.  On the Start menu, click Control Panel.  

3.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.

4.  In Performance and Maintenance, click the System icon.  

5.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    
6.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, and then select Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection.  On the Action menu, click Update Driver.

7.  In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, select Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.

8.  In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, select Don't search I will choose the driver to install, and then click Next.

9.  In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click Have Disk.

10.  In the Install From Disk dialog box, type: C:\CABS\7512318.  Click OK.

11.  In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, select the first Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection listed, and then click Next.

12.  In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click Finish to complete the installation.

In Windows 2000:

1.  The files are extracted to C:\cabs\7512318.

2.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  

3.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

5.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, and then double-click Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection.

6.  In the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

7.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

8.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and then click Next.

9.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Have Disk.

10.  In the Install From Disk dialog box, type: C:\CABS\7512318.  Click OK.

11.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, select Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection, and then click Next.

12.  In the Update Driver Warning dialog box, click Yes.

Note: This driver has been fully tested by Gateway, Intel, and Microsoft.  The compatibility warning can be disregarded.

13.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

14.  In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Finish.

In Windows 98:

1.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.

4.  On the Device Manager tab, double-click Network adapters, and then double-click Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection.

5.  In the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

6.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

7.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then click Next.

8.  In the Select Device dialog box, click Have Disk.

9.  In the Install From Disk dialog box, type: C:\CABS\7512318.  Click OK.

10.  In the Select Device dialog box, select Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection (3-14-2002), and then click OK.

11.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.

12.  In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Finish.

13.  In the System Settings Change dialog box, click Yes.


Removal

In Windows XP:

1.  On the Start menu, click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.

3.  In Performance and Maintenance, click the System icon.

4.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

5.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, and then select Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection.  On the Action menu, click Uninstall.

6.  In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.

In Windows 2000:

1.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.  

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

4.  In Device Manager, double-click Network adapters, and then select Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection.  On the Action menu, click Uninstall.

5.  In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.

In Windows 98:

There is not an easy way to remove the drivers in Windows 98.  This procedure is recommended for advanced users.  Before performing the following steps, ensure that you have a copy of the previous network drivers on disk or CD and that you know how to install the previous version of the drivers.  Many of the settings specific to your network may be lost.  Ensure that you know all of your network settings.  If applicable, ensure that you have permission from your network administrator to remove the driver.

1.  On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

3.  In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.

4.  On the Device Manager tab, double-click Network adapters, select Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection, and then click Remove.

5.  In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.

6.  In the System Settings Change dialog box, click No.

7.  From the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

8.  In the Exploring (C:) window, on the View menu, click Folder Options.

9.  In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab, and then perform the following steps:

 a.  In the Advanced settings area, verify that Show all files is selected.
 b.  In the Advanced settings area, verify that Hide file extensions for known file types is not selected.
 c.  Click OK.

10.  In the Exploring (C:) window, on the Tools menu, click Find, and then click Files or Folders.

11.  In the Find All Files window, perform the following steps:

 a.  In the Named text box, type: Net82557.inf.
 b.  In the Look in box, verify that drive C is selected.
 c.  Click Find Now.

12.  In the Find Net82557.inf window, on the Edit menu, click Select All.

13.  In the Find Net82557.inf window, on the File menu, click Delete.

14.  In the Confirm File Delete dialog box, click Yes.

15.  On the Start menu, click Shutdown.

16.  In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart, and then click OK.

17.  Reinstall the previous drivers.


Troubleshooting

Windows XP:

Run Network Diagnostics to help determine the network configuration problem.

1.  On the Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click System Information. 

2.  In the System Information window, on the Tools menu, click Net Diagnostics.

3.  In the Help and Support Center window, click Scan your system.

4.  The results are shown.  Click the plus sign (+) next to Network Adapters for additional information. 

Note: Verify whether the link light on the back of the network card is lit.  If not, reseat the cable.  If the light still is not lit, check the cable and the port on the hub or contact your network administrator.

Windows 2000:

Check your network configuration in System Information.

1.  On the Start menu, point to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click System Information. 

2.  In the System Information window, click the plus sign (+) next to Network, and then click the Adapter folder.

3.  In the System Information window, in the pane to the right of the Adapter folder, scroll down, and then click Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection.

4.  Check your TCP/IP settings.

Note: Verify whether the link light on the back of the network card is lit.  If not, reseat the cable.  If the light still is not lit, check the cable and the port on the hub or contact your network administrator.

Windows 98:

Ensure that you log on.  You are not able to explore your local network if you cancel the logon.

Run WinIPCFG to check your TCP/IP settings.

1.  On the Start menu, click Run.

2.  In the Run dialog box in the Open text box, type: WinIPCFG.  Click OK.

3.  In the IP Configuration window, click the DOWN ARROW key for Ethernet Adapter information, and then select Intel PRO Adapter.  PPP Adapter is for dial-up networking.

4.  In the IP Configuration window, click More Info.

5.  Check your IP settings.

Note: Verify whether the link light on the back of the network card is lit.  If not, reseat the cable.  If the light still is not lit, check the cable and the port on the hub or contact your network administrator.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
