This Readme file contains important information that supplements the 
"PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card User's Manual". This file is divided into

2.0 PREPARATION
================
Make sure your netowrk environment is properly setup and connected.  
To do this, check the following:

1. WindowsCE Service 2.x or higher version should be installed on your Host PC.
  
   Note: "Host PC" refers to the partner computer connected to your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro
         via a serial cable or Ethernet network connection. The Host PC could be a Desktop PC 
         or a Notebook PC.

2. There must be a serial connection between your Host PC and Palm-size PC/Handhled PC.

3. Configure your Host PC for Ethernet and install the Microsoft Network clinet and TCP/IP protocol.



3.0 INSTALLATION
================

Installing AMB8610 to a Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro
------------------------------------------

Connecting an Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro to a Corporate Local Area Network

1. Establish a partnership between your Palm-size PC/Handhled PC and a Host PC via a serial
   connection. For more information, refer to "The Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro Companion"
   included with your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro package.

2. If you are using a Palm-size PC, insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card 
   Installation diskette in the disk drive on your Host PC. Click Start, then Run.... 
   In the Open: box, type A:\SETUP and follow the on-screen instructions.  

   If you are using a Handhled PC, please skip this step and continue with step 3.

3. Press the Reset button to complete the installation. The new Ethernet
   software will be loaded upon start up.

4. Disconnect the serial cable between the H/PC and your Host PC. 

5. Using the AMB8610 Ethernet cable, connect one side to
   the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash Card and plug the other side to an
   Ethernet hub. 

6. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card in your Palm-size/Handheld PC.

   If you are using a Palm-size PC, the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash card 
   configuration windows will be display. Follow the steps below to complete the configuration.
 
   If you are using a Handheld PC, please select "NE2000 Compatible Driver" and proceed the follwing steps.
   
   Note:
   If you are connecting to a local area network with a DHCP server, make
   sure Obtain an IP address via DHCP is selected and proceed to step 7.

   If your network does not use a DHCP server, select Specify an IP address
   and enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway addresses that
   were supplied by your network administrator.

7. Click the Name Servers tab. 

8. Enter the DNS and WINS addresses provided by your network administrator,
   if necessary, and tap OK.

9. Remove and reinsert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash Card in your
   Palm-size PC/Handhled PC so the new IP settings can take effect. 

10. On your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro, select the Start menu, tap Programs, 
    Communication, and then ActiveSync. 

11. Tap the drop down list box to select Network Connection and the name
    of your Host PC.

12. Tap the Connect... button. After a few seconds, you will see the
    Connection Status dialog.  

13. Once the Connection is made, the Mobile Device icon comes up and you can 
    access the Palm-size/Handhled PC files.


Connecting an Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro to a Host PC Only

1. Establish a partnership between your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro and a Host PC 
   via a serial connection. For more information, refer to "The Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro Companion"
   included with your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro package.

2. On your Host PC, insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash Card
   Installation diskette in the disk drive.

   If you are using a Palm-size PC, click Start, then Run.... In the Open: box, 
   type A:\SETUP and follow the on-screen instructions. 

   If you are using a Handhled PC, please skip this step and proceed step3. 

3. Press the Reset button to complete the installation. The new Ethernet
   software will be loaded upon start up.

4. Disconnect the serial cable between the Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro and your Host PC. 

5. Using the AMB8610 Ethernet cable, connect one side
   to the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet PC Card and plug the other side
   to an Ethernet hub. 

6. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card in your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro.  
   
   If you are using a Palm-size PC, the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash card 
   configuration windows will be display. Follow the steps below to complete the configuration.
 
   If you are using a Handheld PC, please select "NE2000 Compatible Driver" and proceed the follwing steps.
   
7. Select Specify an IP address, then enter the IP Address and Subnet Mask.
   You can leave the Default Gateway field blank. 
 
   If you are unsure of the correct addresses to specify, we recommend
   using these to help avoid conflicts with existing addresses:  

   IP Address    192.168.1.2
   Subnet Mask   255.255.255.0. 

8. Click the Name Servers tab. This dialog will be displayed:

   Enter the Primary WINS address (this is actually the Host PC's IP
   address) and leave the rest of the fields blank.  Then, click OK. 

   If you are unsure of the correct address to specify, we recommend this
   Primary WINS address to help avoid conflicts with existing addresses: 
 
   Primary WINS  192.168.1.1 

9. Remove and reinsert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet Compactflash Card in your
   Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro so the new IP settings can take effect.

10. On your Palm-size PC/Handhled PC, select the Start menu, tap Programs, Communication, and
   ActiveSync. 

11. Tap the drop down list box to select Network Connection and the name
    of your Host PC.

12. Tap the Connect... button. After a few seconds, you will see the
    Connection Status dialog.

13. Once the connection is made, the Mobile Device icon comes up and you can access the Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro files.


Installing AMB8610 to a Laptop PC
---------------------------------
Using Windows 2000 

1. Start Windows 2000.

2. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card into CompactFlash-to-PC Card adapter.

3. Insert the CompactFlash-to-PC card adapter with the AMB8610 CompactFlash Card into the PC Card slot. 
   The Found New HardWare window will be displayed and Windows 2000 will first attempt to find the 
   Microsoft Digital signature.

4. Click Yes on the Digital Signiture Not Found windows to continue the installation.

5. The Files Needed windows will be displayed.  On the box, Copy file from:, type in A:\win2000 and click OK.

6. The Found New Hardware windows will be displayed again and the wizard will complete the installation.


Using Windows 95/98/OSR2

1. Start Windows 95/98/OSR2 on your Laptop PC.

2. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card into CompactFlash-to-PC Card adapter.

3. Insert CompactFlash-to-PC card adapter with the AMB8610 CompactFlash Card into the PC Card slot.
   The New Hardware Found window will be displayed.

3. Select the Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer option,
   and click OK. The Install From Disk window will be displayed.

4. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet ComapctFlash Card User Installation
   diskette in your disk drive.  In the Install From Disk dialog, type
   A:\WIN9X and click OK. The Select Device window will appear. 

5. From here, select AmbiCom PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card (AMB8610) and
   click OK. The Copying Files window will be displayed.

6. Type the path where the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM is located (for example,
   E:\WIN95).  Click OK to complete the installation (Windows 95/98/OSR2
   will ask you to insert the disk labeled Windows 95/98 CD-ROM).  

7. From the System Settings Change window, click Yes to reboot your
   Laptop PC.


Using Windows NT 4.0 

1. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card into CompactFlash-to-PC Card adapter.

2. Insert CompactFlash-to-PC card adapter with the AMB8610 CompactFlash Card into the PC Card slot.

3. Start Windows NT 4.0 on your Laptop PC.

4. Select the Start menu, choose Settings, Control Panel, and double-click
   the Network icon. The Network Settings window will be displayed.

5. Select the Adapters tab and click Add.

6. From the Select Network Adapter dialog box, click Have Disk... and then
   the Continue button.

7. Insert the AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card User Installation
   diskette in the disk drive.  The Insert Disk dialog will be displayed.

8. Type A:\WINNT and click OK. The Select OEM Option screen will be
   displayed.

9. From here, highlight AmbiCom PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card (AMB8610)
   and click OK

10. From the Network Settings window, check the appropriate hardware
   settings for AMB8610 by selecting the Configure button, then click OK.

11. A dialog box will appear prompting you to restart your Laptop PC.
   Click Yes to reboot your PC.
 


 
4.0 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
==============================
 
This section covers common questions that may arise when using the AMB8610 
PowerSaver Ethernet ComapctFlash Card on a Palm-size PC, Handheld PC or Laptop PC. Please note
that "Host PC" refers to the partner computer connected to your Palm-size PC/Handheld
PC via a serial cable or Ethernet network connection. The Host PC
could be a Desktop PC or a Laptop PC. 

1. What version of Windows CE should I install on my Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro?   

   In order for your Handheld PC to work with the AMB8610 PowerSaver
   Ethernet CompactFlash Card, Windows CE V2.x or higher version should be installed. Windows CE V2.x
   supports Ethernet connections, whereas Windows CE V1.x does not. 

2. What network protocol should I use on my Host PC?

   The TCP/IP protocol should be running on your Host PC.  This is the
   only network protocol supported by Windows CE. We also suggest that you
   install the Client for Microsoft Networks in order to use ActiveSync.
   To do this, select the Start menu, choosing Settings, Control Panel,
   and then double-click the Network icon.


3. How do I use ActiveSync over the Ethernet?

   In order to ActiveSync on the Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro, you will need to choose the Start
   menu, select Programs, Communications, and then the ActiveSync option.
   A dialog will be displayed for logging on to the Windows 2000/95/NT
   Workstation/NT server. 

   Once the connection is made, the Mobile Devices window will be displayed
   on the Host PC.  Double-click the icon to access your files on the Palm-size PC/Handhled PC Pro. 

4. How do I verify that AMB8610 is properly installed?

   You can make sure that your Palm-size PC/Handheld PC Pro recognizes the AMB8610 by selecting the
   Start menu, choose Settings, Control Panel and double-tap the System
   icon. In the System section of the System Properties window, locate the
   Expansion Slot area.  "AMB8610 PowerSaver Ethernet CompactFlash Card" should be
   listed. 

5. How do I find more help for the AMB8610?

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
