Before you install the printer driver, read this document and fully understand its contents. ----------------------------------------------------------- Introduction ----------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for your purchase of Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer. The Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver is compatible with Microsoft Windows 95 (hereon referred to as Windows 95), Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (hereon referred to as Windows NT 4.0), Microsoft Windows 3.11 for Workgroups (hereon referred to as WFW 3.11), Microsoft Windows 3.1 (hereon referred to as Windows 3.1) and Microsoft Windows XP (hereon referred to as Windows XP). < Compatible operating systems > The Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver can only be used with Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, WFW 3.11, and Windows 3.1. The printer driver is not compatible with OS/2 or other operating systems. < Win32s installation > When installing the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver in WFW 3.11 or Windows 3.1, Microsoft Win32s (hereon referred to as Win32s) must already be installed on your computer. If you are using WFW 3.11 or Windows 3.1, and Win32s is not installed on your computer, install Win32s from the Win32s disks (two disks) that are included with the printer and then install the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver. If you are using WFW3.11 or Windows 3.1 and are not sure whether Win32s is already installed on your computer or not, try to install Win32s. If Win32s is already installed, Win32s installation program will quit installation automatically. After the installation is complete, restart Windows and you can begin operating the printer. If you are using Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, it is not necessary to install Win32s. ----------------------------------------------------------- Printer Driver Limitations (WFW3.11 and Windows 3.1) ----------------------------------------------------------- The Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver has the following limitations with WFW3.11 and Windows 3.1: < Application Software in the StartUp Group > If you are using WFW 3.11 or Windows 3.1, close all applications from the [StartUp] group in [Program Manager] before installing the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver. After you install the printer driver, it is necessary to restart Windows. If applications in the [StartUp] group launch at this time, the memory needed for the application software may not be secured, and cause Windows to not start properly. < Paper size changed message > In Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0, paper size changed message appears when you change paper size. This message is not displayed in Windows 3.1 and WFW 3.11. < Adobe PhotoShop Installation > Before installing Adobe PhotoShop, be sure to restart Windows. Otherwise error may occur on installation. < Print job is ignored in Adobe PhotoShop > If your print job is ignored and printing will not start, change "win.ini" by following these steps. 1) Use Notepad or another ASCII text editor to add "zspool32.exe" into the load= line in the [Windows] section. <Example> [Windows] spooler = yes load = zspool32.exe << add "zspool32.exe" into this line run = 2) Save the change and close Notepad or another ASCII text editor. 3) Restart Windows < Cancel print from Adobe PhotoShop > When you cancel print by clicking [Cancel] button of Adobe PhotoShop, the application may be closed by canceling print. In such case, please open the file again to continue your work. < User can not start Lotus Freelance Graphics > If you can not start Lotus Freelance Graphics, do the following: 1) Single click Lotus Freelance Graphics' icon. 2) Click "File" (Menu bar of Program Manager). 3) Change the file name of the Command line from "flw.exe" to "flwmain.exe". <Example> (before change) c:\lotsuite\flw\flw.exe (after change) C:\lotsuite\flw\flwmain.exe 4) Click "OK". ----------------------------------------------------------- Notes for Uninstallation ----------------------------------------------------------- To remove the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver, use the Uninstall program in the Xerox DocuPrint P8 group. If you try to remove the driver from the Control Panel by clicking the Remove button, you will fail to remove some driver files. If by mistake you do remove the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver from Control Panel, you can perform a correct uninstallation by installing the printer driver again, and then using the Uninstall program in the Xerox DocuPrint P8 group. ----------------------------------------------------------- Using with Other Printer Drivers ----------------------------------------------------------- Installing the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver on a computer that already has a Windows Printing System or GDI printer driver installed on it can lead to a conflict between the printer drivers. This can cause them to not perform properly. To avoid this problem, change your current printing destination with the printer driver from Parallel (usually LPT1) to File, and then install the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver. ----------------------------------------------------------- Use with a Zip Drive <Windows 95> ----------------------------------------------------------- When connecting Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer to the parallel port of your computer through a Zip drive, pay attention to the following notes: If you access the Zip drive while Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer is printing, an error might occur. To prevent this problem, do not access the Zip drive (i.e., open or close a file on the drive) during printing. When printing a file from the Zip drive to the Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer, change the printer driver settings as explained below. Using this procedure will allow the data to be temporarily saved to your computer's hard drive before printing, so that the Zip drive is not accessed. 1) Click on [Spool Settings] in the [Details] tab in the Xerox DocuPrint [Properties] dialog box. 2) The Spool Settings dialog box appears. Click on the "Start printing after last page is spooled" radio button. 3) Click the OK button. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hints ----------------------------------------------------------- < Image Date Underrun > You may experience "Image Date Underrun" error when you print a complex image. In such case, try the following to print the document. Close the applications you have opened to release the resources for printing the job and ... 1) Click [Retry] button to print with the same resolution again. If you failed printing with 1), 2) Click [Cancel] button and then click [OK] to print with lower resolution. (Only the page with the "Image Date Underrun" will be printed with lower resolution.) If you failed printing with 1) and 2), 3) Click [Cancel] button. And print the page after changing the resolution to 300 dpi from Paper Tab of printer properties. < Scaling > When you print a document with changing scaling from an application (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Corel DRAW!) which supports scaling, set the scaling from application. Then set the scaling of printer properties to default (100%). < Toner Saving mode > The Xerox DocuPrint P8 supports Toner Saving mode. This feature allows you to save toner by controlling toner density and will make your toner last longer. Output printed with TonerSaving mode is readable, but is suitable for drafts, not final prints. < Halftone Pattern > You can select one halftone pattern from "Fine", "Medium", "Coarse" in Halftoning Tab. The following are the suggested guidelines for selecting a halftone pattern. Fine : very small pattern which is appropriate for natural images (bitmaps) Medium: appropriate for business graphics Coarse: appropriate for photocopying or faxing < Dot Gain > Please limit Dot Gain Selection -99 to +99 instead of -100 to +100. If you can not see fine thread color lines ( from a color document) in your output, try changing the Dot Gain of Halftone Tab . < Multiple Copies under certain application > (Particularly QuarkExpress, MS-Works, Harvard Graphics) Under these applications, you may not be able to print multiple copies under this release. Please try printing one copy at a time if this happens. < Adjust Halftone Image > You can adjust the tone of halftone image by changing the settings on Halftoning Tab and Image Tab. Normally you can get the expected print near the default setting. When you change those setting to near the limit, you may experience worse image quality. < When printing application or Windows help > When you want to print the Windows help , application help, etc., do not open printer driver help. If you open the printer driver help, the previously opened help will be closed by opening the printer driver's help. If this occurs, open the Windows or application help again and print the help. < When you open the driver's help > You may experience the driver's help is not displayed correctly when you open the same help multiple times. ----------------------------------------------------------- Xerox Corporation, SHARP Corporation, and Zenographics Inc. do not guarantee the information in this document or the software (Xerox DocuPrint P8 printer driver) included with it, including any adaptability for specific purposes. ----------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft, Windows, Windows NT, MS-DOS, and Windows Printing System are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries.
