------------------------------------------------------------------ Elite 600 Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------ Elite 600 and Elite 600et Release Notes Version 1.1 November 1994 Introduction ------------- Congratulations on your purchase of an Elite 600 or Elite 600et laser printer from GCC Technologies. It is important that you read these brief release notes. Some last minute items that are not documented in the User's Manual are discussed below. PostScript/PCL Auto-Sensing and Switching ------------------------------------------ The Elite 600 can be configured to accept PostScript, PCL, or automatically sense and switch between PostScript and PCL. The factory default for Elite 600 is PostScript only. To enable PCL emulation, use the front panel to change the PS/PCL Sensing sub- menu to Auto Switch, or PCL only (see page 2-6 of User's Manual for instructions). PCL will then be enabled to print at 300 dpi. To enable 600 dpi PCL, change the Resolution sub-menu in the PCL menu to 600 dpi. See page 2-7 of the User's Manual for complete instructions. Macintosh Font Installation ---------------------------- When installing all 25 of the Elite 600 TrueType fonts, a dialog box appears stating "Please insert disk 2 with: Elite 600 TT Fonts Installer.2". This refers to the disk labeled "Printing Software 2". This dialog box may not appear if you perform the custom install, and do not select all of the TrueType fonts available. PCL Fonts ---------- The Elite 600 includes 15 PCL fonts that are compatible with those in the HP LaserJet III. These fonts consist of 7 bitmap and 8 scalable fonts. If you have configured your Elite 600 to print PCL at 600 dpi, the internal bitmap fonts will only print at 300 dpi. The internal scalable fonts will print at 600 dpi, as will any downloaded scalable font. PostScript or PCL Complexity Errors ------------------------------------ If documents containing very complex text and graphics get PCL complexity, PCL fragmentation, or PostScript VM errors, you should perform the following steps to determine if the cause is insufficient memory: 1. If a PostScript document fails to print, and PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto Switch, try changing the PS/PCL Sensing to PostScript only, and reprint the document. This setting will make more memory available to PostScript printing. If the document prints successfully, then either leave the Elite 600 set to PostScript only, or add additional memory to return to Auto Switch mode. If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PostScript only, try printing the document at 300 dpi. Additional memory may be required to print at 600 dpi. 2. If a PCL document fails to print, and PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto Switch, try changing the PS/PCL Sensing to PCL only, and reprint the document. This setting will make more memory available to PCL printing. If the document prints successfully then either leave the Elite 600 set to PCL only, or add additional memory to return to Auto-Switch mode. If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PCL only, try printing the document at 300 dpi. Additional memory may be required to print at 600 dpi. Refer to pages 2-6 and 2-7 of the User's Manual for additional details on changing printer settings. LaserJet III Compatibility --------------------------- The Elite 600's PCL 5 is compatible with Hewlett Packard's LaserJet III, with the exception that the Elite 600 offers PCL 5 at 600 dpi and the LaserJet III does not. When using DOS applications that do not support PostScript, select an HP LaserJet II or LaserJet III printer driver to print to the Elite 600. If your document uses 300 dpi user-defined patterns or 300 dpi bitmap fonts, the Elite 600 will only be able to print these at 300 dpi even if 600 dpi PCL is selected. Displaying The Active Port --------------------------- Pressing the Enter button on the Elite 600's Control Panel during "waiting", "processing" and "printing" will display the input port that a document is being received, processed, or printed from. Printing the PCL Font Page --------------------------- The PCL font page will only print if PCL is enabled. The factory default is PCL disabled. To enable PCL, and print the font page, refer to pages 2-6 and 2-7 in the User's Manual. Initializing Externally Attached Disk Drives --------------------------------------------- To attach two or more disk drives to the Elite 600's SCSI port, it is recommended that each drive is initialized separately prior to chaining them together. Refer to pages 5-8 through 5-10 of the User's Manual for more information on initializing disk drives. Apple LaserWriter 8 Driver --------------------------- A customized version of Apple's LaserWriter 7.1.2 driver and a standard version of Apple's LaserWriter 8 driver are provided on the Macintosh Printing Software disks. GCC's extensive Software QA process has found that some applications are not compatible with the LaserWriter 8 driver. If you experience printing problems while using the LaserWriter 8 driver, use the Elite 600 7.1.2 driver. Color/Grayscale versus Black/White ----------------------------------- The Elite 600 7.1.2 driver, as with all Macintosh printer drivers, has a Print: Black/White or Color/Grayscale radio button selection in the Print Dialog Box. The Elite 600 will print in Color/Grayscale if Black/White is selected, thus there is no difference in the printed output between these two selections. This is consistent with Apple's laser printers and is a bug in Apple's printer driver. Novell PDF ----------- The Elite 600 Windows Printing Software disk contains a Novell PDF file in a Novell directory. This file should be used when printing to an Elite 600 from DOS via a Novell print server. You should copy this file to your print server's SYS:PUBLIC directory and then import the device definition using PRINTDEF. Use PRINTCON to Edit your print job configuration to use Elite 600's printer device definition. Instructions for proper use of both PRINTDEF and PRINTCON are in the NOVELL Print Server NetWare manual. PCL and Novell ATPS -------------------- Novell's AppleTalk Print Server (ATPS) is not compatible with binary files and therefore cannot print PCL documents on the Elite 600. It is recommended that you connect your Elite 600 to the Novell print server's parallel port to print PCL files. Novell ATPS can be used to print ASCII PostScript files. Elite 600et PPD ---------------- If you have an Elite 600et, and are using the LaserWriter 8 driver, it is recommended that you change the default memory from 4 Mbytes to 6 Mbytes in the driver setup. Refer to pages 3-4 and 3-5 in the User's Manual for more information. EtherTalk Zone Changes ----------------------- If you have an Elite 600et and are using LaserWriter Utility to change the EtherTalk zone your printer appears in, you must restart the printer for the zone change to take effect. Parallel Port -------------- If the printer's parallel port is connected to a computer, the computer must be turned on. =================================================================== All trademarks and registered trademarks mentioned herein are the property of their respective holders.
