TCP/IP Network Protocol LPD Filters
========================================================================

This directory contains source code for "filter" programs that can be
used with the Berkeley Unix print spooler, lpd, to send print jobs to
the Elite XL across a TCP/IP network. You don't need the filters if you
don't intend to print from a Unix machine, or if you will print from
Unix by forwarding jobs to the printer's internal lpd (this requires
connecting a SCSI disk to the Elite XL).

To install this software, follow these steps:

1. Copy the binary file "filters.tar" to the Unix machine that will be
the master spooler for the printer. Please note that file transfers
should be done in binary mode.

2. Use the Unix program "tar" to unpack the file. This will create a
directory named "filters" containing several files. The following
command may be used on most Unix machines:

    tar xvf filters.tar

3. Follow the instructions in filters/Makefile to compile and install
the filters, and to add an entry to the text file /etc/printcap.

For more information, see the Makefile and the TCP/IP section of the
printer manual.
