New features and additions

WebAdmin(TM)
WebAdmin allows you to manage your printer remotely using any World Wide
Web browser. For more details on WebAdmin, please refer to the Elite XL
Networking Guide located on the Elite XL Software and Documentation
CD-ROM.

NetWare(R) NEST(TM) (Elite XL 616, 808, 1208, 1208S)
NEST (Novell(R) Embedded Systems Technology) provides the ability to
print in a NetWare environment using NetWare (IPX/SPX) network
protocols. Please see the Elite XL Networking Guide located on the Elite
XL Software and Documentation CD-ROM for complete information about
printing with NEST.

TCP/IP now standard
A TCP/IP network protocol stack now comes standard with the Elite XL.
Please see the Elite XL Networking Guide located on the Elite XL
Software and Documentation CD-ROM for complete information about
printing with TCP/IP. Please note: Use of TCP/IP requires that the
Elite XL be equipped with an Ethernet interface.

12x21 paper size (Elite XL 1208S)
The Elite XL 1208S now supports a new paper size, 12x21, which has
dimensions of up to 12 x 21 inches (304.8 x 533.4 mm), with a printable
area of 11.69 x 20 inches (297 x 508 mm). This allows full-bleed
printing of 11 x 17 inch spreads on oversize paper or polyester plates,
with more space for registration marks and page labels.

12x20 paper size
The Elite XL 608, 616, 808, 1208, and 1208S now support a new paper
size, 12x20, which has dimensions of up to 11.69 x 20 inches (297 x 508
mm), with a printable area of 11.69 x 19.29 inches (297 x 490 mm). This
allows full-bleed printing of 11 x 17 inch spreads, with more space for
registration marks and page labels.

Super B paper size
The Elite XL 608, 616, 808, 1208, and 1208S now support a new paper
size, Super B, which has dimensions of 11.69 x 17.32 inches (297 x 440
mm), and provides edge-to-edge printing. This allows full-bleed printing
of 11 x 17 inch spreads.

Oversize paper support determination
The paper support information listed in the above three items applies to
current shipments of Elite XL printers with the current version of
firmware. Depending on when your printer was manufactured, it may
support fewer or more sizes than listed above. In order to unambiguously
determine which sizes your printer supports, use the Elite XL front
panel Printer Info menu or print a Configuration Page to check your
printer's OS Version and HW Version. The HW Version should contain the
letters "FX", followed by a letter ("N" for Elite XL 608, 808, 1208 and
1208S, or "H" for Elite XL 616), followed by a single digit. Note the
digit's value and refer to the following rules:

+ If the OS version is 2.9 or later and the digit is 4, your printer
supports 12x21.

+ If the OS version is 2.8 or later and the digit is 3 or 4, your
printer supports 12x20.

+ If the OS version is 2.7 or later and the digit is 2, 3, or 4, your
printer supports Super B.

+ If the OS version is 2.6 or earlier or the digit is 1, your printer
does not support any of the above sizes.

+ If the letters "FX" are followed by a character other than "N" or
"H", call GCC Technical Support if you wish to determine your printer's
oversize paper support.

Do not try to use a paper size which your printer does not support, even
if the size is listed in the Page Setup or Print Setup dialog box.
Otherwise, your job may not print, images may be incomplete, and the
paper may jam.

Remember that on Elite XL 1208S (SuperSize), you may use paper up to 12
inches wide when selecting from these sizes. On all other models, the
maximum paper width is 11.69 inches.

AccuGray (Elite XL 616, 808, 1208, 1208S)
The Elite XL 616, 808, 1208 and 1208S incorporate GCC's application-
independent AccuGray halftone correction software. AccuGray enables
PostScript(R) halftones (printed from any application) to be
automatically corrected for grayscale variations due to dot gain.

The AccuGray system applies varying amounts of halftone correction
depending on the screen frequency selected for the halftone. This means
that halftones rendered at 141 lines per inch (lpi) will be equivalent
in perceived grayscale to halftones rendered at 53 lpi. Halftone
correction can be disabled at any time from the Elite XL's front panel
(see page 2-8 in the user's manual).

Default screens
A Default Screens submenu has been added to the PostScript submenu of
the Emulations menu in the printer's front panel. The submenu enables
you to set a specific halftone screen frequency for your output. This
option is useful if the application you are using does not allow for
adjusting screen frequencies.

Additional fonts
Elite XL printers currently ship with a bonus set of Bitstream(R) fonts.
The Elite XL 608 and 616 come with 45 additional TrueType(R) fonts. The
Elite XL 808, 1208 and 1208S come with 250 additional fonts, stored on a
CD-ROM, in both Type 1 and TrueType formats.

In order to use these fonts in your documents, you must install them on
your computer.

Macintosh(R)

The Macintosh font set for the Elite XL 608 and 616 comes in a
compressed form on a floppy disk and must be installed using the
accompanying installer application. The installer automatically places
the fonts into the correct location depending on the Macintosh System
version in use.

The Macintosh font set for the Elite XL 808, 1208 and 1208S are
contained on a CD-ROM. Copy the fonts directly into the appropriate
locations, according to the System version you are using, as follows:

+ System 7.5, 7.1 - Install fonts into the Fonts folder in the System
folder.

+ System 7.0.1, 7.0 - TrueType fonts and Type 1 bitmapped fonts need to
be installed into the System suitcase. Type 1 outline fonts should be
copied into the Extensions folder.

+ System 6.0.8, 6.0.7 - TrueType fonts should be copied into the System
file, using Font/DA Mover 4.1. Type 1 bitmap fonts need to be installed
into the System file and the Type 1 outline fonts should be copied into
the System folder.

Note: If you are using System 6.0.x, you must have the Apple TrueType
extension in your System folder. Copies of the TrueType(R) extension and
Font/DA Mover 4.1 are included with the Printer Software disks and are
automatically installed when a System 6 installation is performed.

Windows(R)

The PC font set for the Elite XL 608 and 616 comes on floppy disks and
should be installed using the Add button available in Fonts option of
the Control Panel.

The PC font set for the Elite XL 808, 1208 and 1208S are contained on a
CD-ROM. Install the TrueType format fonts via the Fonts option in the
Control Panel window, by using the Add button. Install the Type 1 format
fonts into Windows using Adobe Type Manager (ATM).

For more information see the "Fonts" chapter in the Elite XL User's
Manual.

Additional information, operational tips, and work-arounds

AccuGray at low resolutions
Please be aware that AccuGray is calibrated for consistent, high-quality
results at resolutions of 600 dpi and above. At resolutions of 300 or
400 dpi, which are sometimes used for faster draft printing, AccuGray
will not compensate for dot gain with the same precision as for the
higher resolutions.

Mixing paper feed orientations
If you are feeding Letter size or A4 paper from more than one paper
source, make sure the paper is inserted with the same orientation in
both sources.

For example, if Letter-size paper is inserted in Tray 1 in long-edge
feed orientation, then Letter-size paper placed in the multipurpose
feeder or an optional lower tray must also be inserted long-edge feed.
Do not insert one long-edge feed and one short-edge feed.

QuarkXPress(R) 3.3 for Macintosh, LaserWriter(TM) 8 and PPD vs. PDF
files
The Printer Type pop-up menu in the QuarkXPress 3.3 Page Setup window
now lists all PDF files located in the PDF folder as well as all PPD
files located in the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions
folder. (The PDF folder is located inside the QuarkXPress 3.3 folder.)

When using LaserWriter 8, we recommend (as does Quark) that you choose
the PDF file. The Elite XL PPD and PDF are named internally in such a
way that only the PDF will appear in the Printer Type menu, if you have
installed all the software as follows:

1. Performed a complete installation of the Elite XL software.

2. Installed the QuarkXPress PDF file into the PDF folder in the main
QuarkXPress folder. The PDF file is located in the Elite XL software
Application Files folder (specific to your Elite XL model). The
Application Files folder is located in the Elite XL Folder. Both of
these folders are copied onto your hard drive during the initial
installation.

If you have done this, you will see the Elite XL (PDF) displayed in
Printer Type box in the Page Setup window. The PDF file for the Elite XL
will appear as follows:

GCC Elite XL (followed by the model number of your printer)

Remember, if you do not copy the Quark PDF file from the Elite XL's
Application Files folder to the QuarkXPress PDF folder, the Elite XL
selection in the Printer Type menu will be the PPD, not the recommended
PDF.

If for some reason you need to select the PPD, remove the Elite XL PDF
from the Quark PDF folder, restart the application, and reselect the
Elite XL option in the Printer Type menu.

Complexity errors
Elite XL supports PostScript Level 2 and PCL(R) 5/HP-GL/2(R) emulation.
With the "all ports active" and "auto-sensing and switching" features,
Elite XL can differentiate between PostScript and PCL print jobs
received through any of its active interfaces. This includes
LocalTalk(R)/Serial, Parallel, and EtherTalk(R) ports.

However, because of the memory requirements of auto-switching, documents
containing complex text and graphics may not print due to low memory
failures. PCL complexity, PCL fragmentation, or PostScript VM errors,
are a symptom of this problem. Printing failures may be avoided if you
select the "PostScript only" mode when printing complex PostScript
documents, or "PCL only" mode when printing complex PCL documents.
Installing additional RAM in the printer will prevent low memory
failures when in "Auto Switch" mode. The factory default setting for
Elite XL is "PostScript only" mode. See your User's Manual for
additional information on configuring your Elite XL and enabling PCL
functionality.

To determine if a document is not printing due to insufficient memory,
try the following:

PostScript

If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to
PostScript only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the
document. This setting will make more memory available to PostScript
printing. If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print
documents of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the
printer set to PostScript only, or install additional memory to use
"Auto switch" mode.

If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PostScript only, try printing the
document at a lower resolution. Additional memory may be required to
print at higher resolutions.

PCL

If you are printing a Letter or A4 size document in long-edge-feed
orientation, change the paper feed orientation to short-edge-feed.

If PS/PCL Sensing is set to Auto switch, change PS/PCL Sensing to PCL
only, switch the printer off and on, and reprint the document. This
setting will make more memory available to PCL printing.

If the document prints successfully, and you frequently print documents
of similar complexity, you will either have to leave the printer set to
PCL only, or install additional memory to use "Auto switch" mode.

If PS/PCL Sensing is already set to PCL only, try printing the document
at 300 dpi. Additional memory may be required to print at higher
resolutions.

Refer to pages 2-8 and 2-9 of the Elite XL User's Manual for additional
details on changing printer settings.

Starting the printer with a hard drive attached
When a hard drive is attached to the printer, make sure that the drive
is powered on before powering on the printer. Otherwise, either the hard
drive will not be recognized or the printer will not initialize.

Printer's name after reset
As shipped from the factory, the printer's name, in the front panel,
will read Elite XL (followed by the model #). If you reset the printer
to its factory settings (see page 2-3 of the user's manual), the
printer's name will change to Elite XL (no model # following).

Default resolution after reset
If you reset the printer to its factory default settings (see page 2-3
of the Elite XL User's Manual), the PostScript default resolution is
reset to the highest resolution that your Elite XL model is capable of
printing at. Therefore, an Elite XL 616 will reset to 600 dpi, an Elite
XL 608 or 808 will be reset to 800 dpi, and an Elite XL 1208 or 1208S
will reset to 1200 dpi.

Note for Elite XL 608 users: The Elite XL 608 is shipped with the
PostScript resolution set to 600 dpi. However, the default resolution is
800 dpi (as detailed above). The printer's standard memory is not enough
to efficiently process documents at 800 dpi.

Therefore, when the default resolution is used on the Elite XL 608, all
documents will take longer to print, and many documents, especially
those that are larger than letter size with moderately complex text or
graphics, will not print. If you want to continue to print at the higher
resolutions, we highly recommend upgrading the printer's memory (see
page C-1 of the user's manual). Otherwise, set the printer's resolution
back to 600 dpi (see the user's manual).
