Chapter 1	Introduction

The GF100TXRIII/GF100TXRIII ACPI fast Ethernet PCI-Bus LAN adapters are network
adapters designed for connecting IBM PCs or the compatibles with PCI extension bus to
networks. It is incorporated with a 10/100Mbps dual-speed RJ-45 connector with automatic
speed detection function. This feature allows it to be connected to an IEEE802.3
10BASE-T standard or an IEEE802.3u 100BASE-TX standard Ethernet network. In
addition, the GF100TXRIII ACPI is designed for wake-up NIC only in PCs with the 3-pin
header connector on the PC motherboard.

Inserting Adapter in PCI Slot & Connecting the Remote Wake-Up Cable

Step 5 to 7, only for the GF100TXRIII ACPI adapter

Follow these steps to insert the GF100TXRIII/GF100TXRIII ACPI adapter in your
computer:

1. Turn off the computer's power. Remove all power cords.

2. Open or remove the computer's cover.

3. If your order does not include the Boot ROM option, go ahead to the next. If your order
includes the Boot ROM option, then install the Boot ROM Chip by plugging the chip
into the Boot ROM socket on the GF100TXRIII card.

4. Insert the adapter in a PCI expansion slot.

5. Connecting the Remote Wake-Up Cable. (Connecting the Remote Wake-Up cable is
optional. Connect this cable only if your PC supports Remote Wake-Up and you want
to use this feature.)

6. Insert the Remote Wake-Up cable into the connector on the GF100TXRIII ACPI.

7. Attach the cable to the connector on the PC motherboard.

8. Secure the adapter to the rear of the computer's chassis.

9. Close or replace the computer's cover.

Connecting the Network Cable

Connect the network cable to the connector provided on the adapter. Plug the UTP/STP
Category 5 cable to the RJ-45 connector on the adapter. The other end of the UTP/STP
cable should go to a 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX hub. The maximum length of this
UTP/STP cable is 100 meters (from the computer to the hub). See the following figure for
illustration.

The following table summarizes the 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet topology
comparison.

LED Indicators

The LED indicators are used for following diagnoses.

? Link LED : Link indicator

"ON" indicates good linkage between the GF100TXRIII /GF100TXRIII ACPI and its
supporting hub.

? Activity LED : Activity indicator

"Blinking" indicates network data is being transmitted or received.
