 3. Installing and Uninstalling the Driver
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: The following installation and uninstallation instructions are only
for Windows 98 SE. A new feature in Windows 2000, called Windows file
protection, prevents certain files from being overwritten. This leads
to installation problems under Windows 2000. We're currently working
with Microsoft to resolve this problem. Once we do, we'll include
installation and uninstallation instructions for Windows 2000 in
            subsequent driver kits.

================================================================================
 Installing the driver

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Before you begin

If you already have a WDM-style driver installed, make sure you uninstall the
driver before installing a different one. For details, see "Uninstalling the
 driver."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing the driver using the Found New Hardware wizard

After the computer restarts and you log in (if necessary), the Add New Hardware
wizard appears to help you find and install a driver for the audio controller
 (labeled PCI Multimedia Audio Device).

To install the driver, follow these steps:

   1. Click Next.
The next page appears asking you what you want to do.

   2. Click "Search for the best driver for your device", and then click Next.

The next page appears asking you which locations should be searched.

   3. Click the checkboxes so that only the "Specify a location" check box is
      selected.

   4. In the text box, type the pathname for the driver you want to install (or
use the Browse button), and then click Next.

   5. If a page appears asking you what you want to install, click "The updated
      driver", and then click Next.

The next page appears indicating the location of the driver that Windows
      is going to install.

   6. Click Next.

Windows copies the driver files to their appropriate folders on your hard
      disk.

   7. Click Finish.

A series of windows appear telling you that Windows is installing the
      driver.

================================================================================
 Uninstalling the driver

To uninstall the driver, you need to do two things:

    * Uninstall the audio controller
    * Remove the driver files from the computer's hard disk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Uninstalling the audio controller

   1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

   2. Click the Device Manager tab.

   3. Click "View devices by type".

   4. Click the plus sign next to the "Sound, video and game controllers"
      category.

   5. Right-click the "Crystal SoundFusion" device, and then click Remove.

   6. Click OK.

   7. Click Close to close the System Properties dialog box.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Removing the driver files from the computer's hard disk

   1. Delete the c:\windows\cwcdata folder.

   2. In the c:\windows\inf\other folder, delete the following file:

      crystal semiconductor corporationcwcwdm.inf

   3. In the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, delete all files whose names
begin with "cwc" and have a .sys extension (cwc*.sys).

   4. Restart the computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 4. Known Issues and Limitations
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

   1. When the audio controller is attached to a PCI bus other than bus 0,
Device Manager displays the game port with a yellow exclamation point.
Microsoft plans to fix this problem in DirectX 7.0.

   2. There is a change in MIDI tempo caused by changing volume when using
      DirectSound applications.

   3. Suspending and resuming while playing a MIDI file causes noise.

   4. There is some stuttering whenever the system is restarted while playing
      a wave file.

   5. There is some stuttering during the playback of wave files (using the
      DSound buffer test application).

   6. There is a prompt to restart when Input/Output configuration setting of
      Game Port is changed.

   7. Disabling and re-enabling certain devices may require a reboot to
      complete the operation.

   8. When reinstalling the driver under Windows 2000, if the recommended
procedure was not followed, registry problems may occur.
