ReadMe.txt Driver File Contents (lavadrivers.zip)

The "Utils" (utilities) subdirectory of your LavaPort diskette contains
several programs that you may find useful when using your LavaPort with
an external modem. The included utilities are:

1. Lava Com Port Redirector
2. Modem Speed Set Utility (ONLY FOR LAVAPORT [16650] Serial Port Cards)

These programs are described below. You may run the Lava Com Port Redirector
from the diskette without installing it if you wish. The Lava Speed Set Utility
must be installed using the standard Windows95/98 Add New Programs procedure in
in order to work.

NOTE: These utilities are for use with Windows95/98 ONLY !! Do not attempt to use
these programs with any other operating system.

1. Lava Com Port Redirector (Redirect.exe)

Users of Windows 95/98 are theoretically able to install up to 255 serial ports
on their PC's. However, many applications that use serial ports have
configuration programs that install only from COM1 to COM4. At Lava, several of
our products can be installed with port addresses higher than the traditional
COM4. Because certain application programs do not take advantage of this
feature, Lava has included a Com Port Redirect Utility that will allow
ports with COM names above COM4 to be used with older software. The Lava
Port Redirector changes COM names without changing the I/O adresses or
IRQs that are assigned to them.

2. Modem Speed Set Utility (MdmSpeed.exe) (ONLY FOR LAVAPORT [16650] Serial Port Cards)

Many external modems have the ability to connect with the serial
port at 230,400 or 460,800 bps. However, because most PC's ship with the
standard 16550 UART Com Port which supports a maximum data rate of
115, 200 bps, many manufacturers' modems were originally designed to work
only at this speed. With a LavaPort you are able to take advantage of
higher speed settings - 230,400 or 460,800 bps.

Because high speed data rate settings are usually extended options, many
modems require a complicated and time consuming process of sending AT
commands through a terminal application and setting port and modem
parameters manually. Lava's Modem Speed Set Utility eliminates this.

Through a click of a button you can now configure most modems to run at
a serial data rate of 230,400 thereby configuring both the port and modem
automatically.

Lava's modem speed set application looks into the registry of Windows 95,
detects all the LavaPorts installed and all the active modems installed
on the LavaPorts. It then allows you to enable the 230,400 setting for
the modem(s) that are currently connected to your LavaPorts or set to set
them back to autobaud (115,200 bps or slower). In addition, for some
modems, the Lava Speed Set Utility also allows you save your settings to
the modem's memory through a special advanced section.
