****************************************************** * * * FileSafe Tape Software Release Version 5.2.3-TD * * * ****************************************************** ENHANCEMENTS ============ FileSafe AUTORUN.EXE program V5.01 ---------------------------------- This version of the FileSafe AUTORUN.EXE program is compatible with DOS versions 3.1 and greater, including DOS 5.0 and other popular command interpreters. The AUTORUN.EXE file can be copied to and run from any subdirectory, usually \MTN_TAPE. The AUTORUN.EXE program will look for the schedule file (AUTORUN.DAT) in the directory where the AUTORUN.EXE file resides. If AUTORUN.EXE cannot locate the AUTORUN.DAT file there, it will then search the root directory. This allows for compatibility with all versions of the Tape software. Using the /P option ------------------- The /P option is used to preempt programs that you may currently be in when an AUTORUN appointment is due. This means that while you are in your word processing program for example, and an appointment is due, the appointment will be executed and then you will be returned to your word processing program. When a program is preempted by AUTORUN, the memory that your program occupies is written to a temporary file on disk. If you are low on disk space, this file will not be written and your program will not be preempted. An error indicating this condition is usually given and AUTORUN will wait until you exit your program to execute the appointment. Some TSR's (Terminate-Stay-Resident programs) do not always behave properly with other TSR's loaded and can cause conflicts with AUTORUN. It is suggested that AUTORUN is the last TSR to be loaded. When using the /P option, it is not recommended that a TSR is loaded using an AUTORUN appointment. NEVER unload a TSR using an AUTORUN appointment when the /P option is used. If you wish to load TSR's via an AUTORUN appointment, load AUTORUN without the /P option. Some experimentation with your programs may be needed when using preemption, especially those programs that are run on a Network. If you experience any problems when using this option, then load AUTORUN without it. Loading AUTORUN into upper memory -------------------------------- AUTORUN can now be loaded into upper memory using a memory manager program. However, if AUTORUN is loaded into upper memory and changes are made to your schedule using the FileSafe AUTOSET.EXE program or the AUTOMATIC BACKUP option in TAPE, the schedule changes will not be recognized immediately by AUTORUN. AUTORUN can be unloaded from upper memory and then re-loaded to have the new schedule take effect. Data Compression ---------------- Data compression during backup typically doubles the useful capacity of any tape cartridge; those which formerly held 40 megabytes (QIC40) will now hold 80 megabytes, while those which held 150 megabytes (TD-101 with an extended length cartridge) may now hold 300 megabytes. Backup performance typically improves, depending upon hard disk and CPU speed. QIC40 and QIC80 users (those without a Mach2 card) in particular will notice increased speed when using compression. When 5.2.3-TD is first installed, the default is to write all volumes using data compression. If a user should wish to disable compression, this can be done via the Utilities, Defaults screen in the lower right hand corner. Most users will never have a reason to disable this feature. The actual capacity of each tape can no longer be precisely determined prior to a backup operation. This is because some files (e.g., data base or document files) compress very well, while others (e.g., previously ZIPped or ARCd files) do not compress at all, and may even expand slightly. Because of the inability to accurately predict tape capacity when writing compressed volumes, users will occasionally receive warnings from FileSafe that a given backup will not fit on a particular tape. When this happens, the user is given the opportunity to format additional tracks, change tapes, abort the operation, or to simply proceed. Often, the best choice when writing compressed is to simply proceed; the volume may in fact fit. Please see your user's manual and addendums for more details regarding this powerful new feature. New Integrated Mach2 -------------------- Supports new Mach2 controller board in "Setboard." PROBLEM CORRECTIONS =================== Fixed incompatibilities found using the Mach2 controller on some 386 and 486 systems. NEW DEFAULT HARDWARE CONFIGURATION ================================== The Mach2 controller for non-microchannel systems is now being shipped with jumpers set for DMA channel 3 and interrupt channel 5. This setting is best for AT-class machines; XT-class systems will fail CHKTAPE, however, because these settings conflict with the hard disk controller. If you are installing a Mach2 on an XT, be sure to change these jumpers first. We recommend using DMA 1 and interrupt 3 on XTs; alternatively, DMA 2 and interrupt 6 may be set. ****************************************************** * * * FileSafe Tape Software Release Version 5.2.2-TD * * * ****************************************************** PROBLEM CORRECTIONS =================== Add a patch to support interrupt handling with Phoenix Bios. ****************************************************** * * * FileSafe Tape Software Release Version 5.2.1-TD * * * ****************************************************** PROBLEM CORRECTIONS =================== Occasional Computer Lock-Ups ---------------------------- In prior releases, the TAPE software would cause the computer system to lock-up and require a power-on reset. This condition would occur during periods where the tape drive was not streaming, and the TAPE software was waiting for I/O buffers to be made available. This has been corrected in this software release. Mach2 Controller On PS/2 ------------------------ On some PS/2 models, such as the Model 70 25MHz, use of the Mach2 controller may occasionally cause the computer system to hang if the DMA mode is set to burst mode. If this problem is encountered on a PS/2, it is suggested that the DMA mode be set (via the reference disk) to Single Transfer for the Mach2 controller. KNOWN LIMITATIONS ================= IBM PS/2 Model 70 25 MHz ------------------------ Installing the TD4000 or 8000 Plus tape drives on this computer requires using the Mach2 controller board. However, some problems have been noticed when DMA channels higher than 6 are used for the tape drive. To avoid these problems, it is suggested that the Fairness mode be turned off (via the reference disk) for the IBM Fixed Disk Adapter when using DMA channels higher than 6. Compaq Deskpro 286 (TM) ----------------------- The CHKTAPE program automatically configures the TAPE software to run with the installed hardware. However, on this computer, the software will incorrectly set the "Controller type" to 5 when using a Mach2 controller with a an internal 8000 Plus (Part Number 01-30525-01). This will record QIC-80 format at slow speed. By entering the Utilities Install screen, the "Controller type" can be manually set to the desired format. Refer to the on line help for more information on this option. If you wish to run at high speed QIC-80 format, the tapes will require preformatting with the "Controller type" set to 5. After formatting, return to the Utilities Install screen and change the "Controller type" to the desired format prior to performing a backup. With the internal 8000 Plus (Part Number 01-30526-01), you will be unable to use any "Controller type" besides 7. CHKTAPE will automatically configure the software to run as type 7. Novell Users - Directory Naming ------------------------------- Novell allows creating directories which do not adhere to the DOS naming limit of 8.3 (as in ACCOUNTI.NG). Novell allows you to create the same directory as ACCOUNTING which exceed 8 characters. If such directory names are on the Novell partition when a backup is performed, an attempt to restore would result in a "Path not found" error for all data on the tape. To check for the existence of these directories, use the DOS TREE command and check for any messages indicating an invalid directory. Novell Users - Macintosh Interface ---------------------------------- Novell 2.15 operating system allows Macintosh users to store Macintosh files on the server. This version of the software does not support Macintosh files and uncertain results will occur if Macintosh files and directories exist on the server when a backup or restore is done. Novell Users - Restoring Rights and Trustee Lists ------------------------------------------------- Restoring data to a Novell system allows the option of restoring Novell security information in the form of Novell's Rights and Trustee Lists (R&TL). If a complete backup is always done, a restore will always retrieve the R&TL if requested. Backups using "Backup of modified files by archive bit or since": If this type of "modified since" backup was used and to ensure all R&TL are properly restored, you should start by restoring from the last complete backup answering Yes to "Do you wish to restore the Rights and Trustee Lists..." prompt, then restore the last modified since backup, again answering Yes to the prompt for R&TL. Backup using "Archive attribute backup only": Start by restoring the last complete backup, then restore IN ORDER all of the "modified since" backups. In all restores, answer Yes to the "Do you wish to restore the Rights and Trustee Lists..." prompt. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS ======================== Backup/Restore Verification --------------------------- It is highly recommended that a verification pass be made after a backup or restore operation. This will insure the integrity of the backup or restore, and can be used as a precaution against corrupted data. One convenient way to do this is to go into the Utilities Default screen, and enter YES to every "Verify After" options. This will configure the TAPE software to perform a verification by default immediately after a backup or restore operation. This default can be overridden from the Backup or Restore screen to minimize the time for these operations. Tape Retensioning ----------------- It is recommended that the tapes be retensioned periodically. Otherwise, there could be a potential for data corruption on tape which would result in a 223 error (Unrecoverable read/write failure). This situation is aggravated when the tape drive is not streaming, which could happen if backups of volumes from a file server are performed.Download Driver Pack
