1. WINDOWS 95 SUPPORT
1.1 Driver Installation
INSTALLING FROM MOUSE PROPERTIES
Use this procedure to change from a standard Windows 95
mouse driver, or from another driver that uses the
standard Mouse Properties sheet:
- From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel,
then double-click Mouse to open Mouse Properties.
NOTE: If you cannot find Mouse Properties, or if
your version does not have a Change option, skip
ahead to "Installing from Device Manager."
- Select the General tab, then click Change. The Select
Device screen will appear.
- Click Have Disk and insert the driver disk in your
floppy drive. Confirm or correct the source file path
(normally "A:\"), then click OK.
- Click Alps GlidePoint, then click OK to copy the
driver files to your system.
- After the files are copied, Mouse Properties will
show the new device name. Click Close.
- The System Settings Change message will offer to
restart your computer so the new settings can take
effect. Click Yes.
INSTALLING FROM DEVICE MANAGER
Use this procedure if you cannot access the Change
option through Mouse Properties (for example, your
current driver substitutes its own control panel):
- From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel,
then double-click System to open System Properties.
- Select the Device Manager tab, then View devices by
type. Click the plus sign next to the Mouse category.
One or more device names will appear under Mouse.
- Double-click the device name that matches your
hardware, opening its property sheet.
- Select the Driver tab, then click Change Driver. The
Select Device screen will appear.
- Click Have Disk and insert the driver disk in your
floppy drive. Confirm or correct the source file path
(normally "A:\"), then click OK.
- Click Alps GlidePoint, then click OK to return to the
property sheet Driver tab.
- Click OK to copy the driver files to your system.
- The System Settings Change message will offer to
restart your computer so the new settings can take
effect. Click Yes.
INSTALLING FROM ADD NEW HARDWARE
Another way to change drivers is through the Add New
Hardware Wizard in Control Panel. However, this method
produces a confusing display in Device Manager, because
it adds new Mouse entries without clearing the old
ones. It may also lead to inaccurate information about
which pointing devices are active or inactive.
1.2 Using the Alps GlidePoint Control Panel
- From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel,
then double-click Alps GlidePoint to bring up the
Alps GlidePoint Control Panel. (This enhanced control
panel replaces the standard Mouse Properties sheet.)
TIP: You can create a shortcut for this step by
dragging the Alps GlidePoint icon onto the desktop.
- The Alps GlidePoint controls are grouped into five
categories (Pointer, Motion, Orientation, Shortcuts,
Tapping). Online Help is provided for all topics.
- When you are satisfied with your settings, click OK
to close the Alps GlidePoint Control Panel.
1.3 Control Panel Restrictions
Most of the Alps GlidePoint Control Panel features
operate identically under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95,
except for the following:
- Pointer Growth: These controls are disabled under
Windows 95, where Pointer Growth is not currently
supported.
- Pointer Trails: This feature requires a compatible
display driver. It will remain dimmed and unavailable
if the current display driver lacks the necessary support.
- Pointer Color and Size: This feature requires a Windows 95
standard cursor. If you installed the MS-Plus, please set a
Windows 95 standard cursor.
1.4 Restoring Your Installation
The Alps GlidePoint drivers are compatible with most
standard mice and similar pointing devices. However, if
you do change drivers to use another device, you can
restore the Alps GlidePoint installation (including
your previous control panel settings) as follows:
- Follow the first-time installation procedure in
section 1.1, using the Mouse Properties or Device
Manager method, up to the Select Device screen.
- In the Models column, select Alps GlidePoint. Click OK (twice
if you started from Device Manager).
- If you entered through Mouse Properties, click Close
(not necessary with the Device Manager method).
- The System Settings Change message will offer to
restart your computer so the new settings can take
effect. Select Yes.

2. WINDOWS 3.1 SUPPORT
2.1 Driver Installation
To install the Alps GlidePoint driver for Windows 3.1
(including Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups) or
any DOS version (3.3 or later is recommended):
- Insert the driver disk in your floppy drive. If you
are running Windows, close any open applications.
- From the DOS prompt or the Program Manager File/Run
menu, type "A:\INSTALL" (using your floppy drive
letter) and press Enter (or click OK).
- You will be asked to confirm the installation type
(DOS, Windows, or both), the driver directory, and
whether the DOS driver should be loaded at startup
time. If you are unsure about any question, simply
accept the default response.
- In most cases, Install will offer to restart your
system so the new settings can take effect.
2.2 Using the Alps GlidePoint Control Panel
- From the Program Manager, open the Main program
group, then double-click on Control Panel.
- Double-click the Alps GlidePoint icon to bring up the
Alps GlidePoint Control Panel. (This enhanced control
panel replaces the standard Mouse Control Panel.)
- The Alps GlidePoint controls are grouped into five
categories (Pointer, Motion, Orientation, Shortcuts,
Tapping). Online Help is provided for all topics.
- When you are satisfied with your settings, click OK
to close the Alps GlidePoint Control Panel.
2.3 Restoring Your Installation
The Alps GlidePoint drivers are compatible with most
standard mice and similar pointing devices. However, if
you do change drivers to use another device, you can
restore the Alps GlidePoint installation (including
your previous control panel settings) as follows:
- If you are running Windows, close any open
applications.
- From the DOS prompt or the Program Manager File/Run
menu, type "C:\GPOINT\INSTALL" (using the drive and
directory from your original Alps GlidePoint
installation) and press Enter (or click OK).
- Follow the prompts. For the driver directory, again
specify the same path (e.g., C:\GPOINT) from your
original Alps GlidePoint installation. Using this
path will cause Install to restore the previous
configuration using those files and saved settings.
- In most cases, Install will offer to restart your
system so the new settings can take effect.

3. DOS SUPPORT
The Windows 95 installation described in section 1.1
automatically includes the DOS driver, AMOUSE.COM. This
driver provides the support needed for mouse-aware DOS
applications, either full-screen or windowed.
If you are not running Windows 95, use the INSTALL
program as described in section 2.1 to install the Alps
GlidePoint drivers for DOS only, Windows only (version
3.1), or both DOS and Windows.
Some of the Alps GlidePoint settings (such as
sensitivity, acceleration and orientation) are shared
between the DOS and Windows drivers. The easiest way to
set these options is through the Alps GlidePoint
Control Panel in Windows. The DOS driver will pick up
any changes the next time it starts up.
Other settings (such as the pointer options) may differ
between DOS and Windows, and are stored separately in
the MOUSE.INI file. You can change the DOS settings
directly by editing this file or by adding option
switches to the AMOUSE command line.
For a summary of the available command line options,
type "AMOUSE /?" at the DOS command prompt. For further
details, see AMOUSE.TXT or AMOUSE.WRI.
