                    ARCDRIVE Systems driver installation
                               for Windows 95

                  For ARCDRIVE-HD, ARCDRIVE-CD and THINKCD

PCMCIA & Parallel Port HD & CDROM DRIVES

Section 1 "PCMCIA PLUG & PLAY DRIVERS" below covers the
installation of the PCMCIA drivers under Windows 95.

Section 2, "REAL MODE PARALLEL PORT DRIVERS" deals with the
installation of the Parallel Port Interface drivers if your model
of ARCDRIVE is fitted with a Parallel Port Interface Cable.

If your ARCDRIVE is delivered with both interfaces, PCMCIA and
Parallel Port, you must follow the instructions of both Sections.

1 - PCMCIA PLUG & PLAY DRIVERS
------------------------------

If the DOS PCMCIA software layer was already installed on your
machine when Windows 95 was first installed, you should be able to
edit the CONFIG.SYS file and see that the lines concerning the
PCMCIA socket drivers have been REMarked out. Normally, the
Windows 95 Installation Wizard REMarks out these lines when it
detects both a PLug & Play PCMCIA hardware and a Plug & Play machine
BIOS at installation time.

There are at least two such lines, one for the Socket Services
driver and the other for the Card Services driver. An example is
given below:

'REM Socket Services Driver : DEVICE = XXXXSS.SYS'
'REM Card Services Driver : DEVICE = XXXXCS.SYS'

If these lines are not REMarked out in CONFIG.SYS, you should try
again to install the appropriate Windows 95 PCMCIA Socket Driver
from the Windows 95 Control Panel running the program 'Add New
Hardware'. If this does not succeed, i.e. if the above lines are
not eventually REMarked out, this probably means that your machine
does not support Plug & Play PCMCIA and that you can only install
traditionnal so-called REAL MODE DOS drivers. In this case,
follow the manual instructions to install the DOS and Windows 3.x
ARCDRIVE drivers which should still work fine under Windows 95 in
REAL MODE.

To check that the PCMCIA socket hardware has been dully recognized
and installed by the Windows 95 Installation Wizard, you should
see your PCMCIA socket hardware in the list of installed devices
given by the 'Device Manager' (click on 'System' in the 'Control
Panel' and then 'Device Manager' to display the list of installed
devices).

When the ARCDRIVE PCMCIA card is first plugged into one of the
PCMCIA sockets, once the PCMCIA socket hardware has been mounted by
Windows 95, the Installation Wizard will pop up a window informing
you that a new piece of hardware has just been found and
requesting you to select a driver for this new hardware from the
following options :

        . Windows default driver,
. Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer,
. Do not install a driver,
. Select from a list of alternate drivers.

Select the second option, 'Driver from disk supplied by Hardware
Manufacturer', insert the ARCDRIVE diskette and follow the
instructions given by the Installation Wizard. The ARCDRIVE
should be recognized after installation without rebooting.

If by mistake, you have installed the Windows 95 Default Driver
called 'Standard ESDI/IDE driver', or some other, which you can
see from the list of installed hardware from the Device Manager,
you should Remove this driver from the list, pull out the ARCDRIVE
card from the PCMCIA slot, insert it back and start the installion
anew.

There are now two new entries in the list of devices displayed by
the Device Manager, one under the heading 'CDROM' which shows the
model of CDROM drive (e.g. TOSHIBA CDROM XM5xxx) and one under
'Hard Drives' with the name of the device driver 'ARCDRIVE PCMCIA
& Parallel Port CDROM Drive'. The same driver is used for the
ARCDRIVE hard drives and CDROM drives.

2 - REAL MODE PARALLEL PORT DRIVER
----------------------------------

As it stands there is no possibility to identify the ARCDRIVE
Parallel Port interface as a PLUG & PLAY device. The Parallel
Port Interface is therefore installed in REAL MODE as a standard
DOS/Windows 3.x driver. If the Parallel Port Interface was
installed prior to Windows 95, it should continue to operate in
the same way from Windows 95 with no change in CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

If this is the first time installation, proceed exactly as
described in the ARCDRIVE manual for DOS/Windows 3.x, insert
the ARCDRIVE diskette in drive A and type :

   A: <ENTER>
   INSTALL <ENTER>

and follow the instructions given by the install program.

Two lines are added by the install program, in CONFIG.SYS:

   LASTDRIVE = M
   DEVICE = C:\ARCDRIVE\ARCCD.SYS

and one in AUTOEXEC.BAT:

   MSCDEX /D:ARCCD001
