1) 56K MODEM TECHNOLOGY
   ====================

   General Information About 56 Kbps Connections
   ---------------------------------------------

   -In order to achieve 56Kbps connects, there can be only one
    digital to analog conversion between the connecting modems.
    Also, the modems at both ends of the call must support 56K
    connections to achieve 56K speeds. If they do not, they
    will negotiate a standard V.34 rate. Current US FCC 
    regulations limit download speeds of the modem to 53Kbps.

   -Several factors exist that can limit the modem's 
    performance. Factors that can contribute to lower connection 
    rates are:

    1. Noisy line conditions on individual calls
    2. Dirty or faulty wiring
    3. Poor connection ability of the modem/fax machine on the
       other side
    4. The Bulletin Board Service, Internet Service Provider or
       On-Line Service Provider may be forwarding the call to 
       another location (long distance)to extend their local 
       calling areas.

    To improve your modem performance, try connecting to and 
    from different locations.

3) WHAT'S NEW IN THE 2.00 SOFTWARE DRIVER RELEASE
   ==============================================
    
   -Difficulties in installing the R2BM56WG in Windows NT 4.0
    have been corrected.
   
   -Support for use in Windows NT 4.0 with Softex Card Services
    for NT has been added.
    
      
4) CREATING A DISK INSTALL
   =======================

   -If you need a diskette version of the R2BM56WG software for
    installation on a system without a CD-ROM, the CD-ROM 
    includes a utility, MAKEDISK.BAT, which will create three
    diskettes that contain all files necessary for installation.
    DISK1 includes SETUP.EXE, which installs all Xircom 
    utilities; DISK2 contains drivers for Windows 9.x and 
    Windows NT 4.0; DISK3 contains drivers for Windows 98SE 
    and Windows 2000.  

    IMPORTANT NOTE: Simply copying the files from the DISK1,
    DISK2, and DISK3 folders on the CD to diskettes WILL NOT 
    set up the diskettes correctly! The MAKEDISK.BAT utility 
    must be run for the diskettes to be constructed properly.

  
5) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES
   ======================

   -IBM ThinkPad 600 Model 2645-45U

    Before attempting to remove the R2BM56WG from an IBM 
    ThinkPad 600 Model 2645-45U, BE SURE to turn off the 
    computer completely.  Removing the card without turning 
    the computer off may cause the computer to power off 
    prematurely.  It may be necessary to detach the power cord 
    and remove the battery before attempting to turn the 
    computer on again.

    You can identify the specific model of the computer by 
    reading the barcode label on the bottom of the machine.  
    The text on the label will read "TYPE 2645-45U" if that is 
    the model you have.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
