###################################################################### DELL OPENMANAGE(TM) REMOTE ASSISTANT VERSION 2.4 ###################################################################### This document contains updated information on the Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant Card (DRAC) II and Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant software. See the "Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant Card User's Guide" for general information about the DRAC II. You can find the guide on the "Dell Online Documentation" CD or at support.dell.com. ====================================================================== Open Issues ====================================================================== The following section describes open issues with your DRAC II software. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Remote Floppy Boot -------------------------------------------------------------------- Network connection through the Remote Floppy Boot feature is not supported. If the diskette you are booting from contains a protected mode paging application such as "emm386.exe", Remote Floppy Boot may fail. The applications allow writing to the area of memory where the DRAC II option ROM code is stored. If the option ROM code is overwritten, Remote Floppy Boot will not operate. Certain plug-in RAID cards conflict with DRAC II being able to access a second diskette during Remote Floppy Boot. Multiple diskette packages such as Dell Diagnostics fail to load the second diskette. This issue does not affect single-diskette applications such as BIOS or ESM firmware flashing. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Internet Explorer Browser Problem When Using DRAC II Web Console (DWC) -------------------------------------------------------------------- When you use Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer 4.x or 5.x, the screen refresh does not clear properly, and the screen flickers when scrolling. Dell recommends that you maximize the browser when using the DWC and use a minimum 1024 x 768 pixels desktop area to minimize scrolling. When using Internet Explorer version 4.72.3612.1713, the DWC does not start properly the first time DWC is installed. The desktop flickers rapidly and the application stops. Close Internet Explorer and relaunch DWC as a workaround. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Test the Pager Feature in IT Assistant -------------------------------------------------------------------- When issuing a test page from the "Remote Assistant Card Configuration" window in Dell OpenManage IT Assistant, you might see the following error message: "OpenManage IT Assistant encountered the following error: Unable to update the DRAC II user configuration." The test page is issued even though the error message displays. Change the IT Assistant Connection Service Timeout from 60 to 120 seconds as a workaround. For alphanumeric paging, using more then 10 characters in the "Pager Number" field causes a buffer overflow that can hang the system. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Screen Does Not Scroll Using Mouse Scroll Wheel -------------------------------------------------------------------- ActiveX control cannot sense the scroll wheel movement directly; it needs to be translated into regular mouse movements and communicated to the ActiveX control. If the mouse driver does not support translation into regular mouse movements, the scroll wheel does not work. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Erratic Mouse Movement on Managed Node During Console Redirect -------------------------------------------------------------------- The mouse movement on a managed node that is under console redirection from the DRAC II Web Console appears jerky and possibly erratic. To avoid this problem, Dell recommends not using the mouse and keyboard on a managed node while it is under console redirection. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Console Redirect Fails to Display the Windows Graphics Test -------------------------------------------------------------------- The DRAC II Console Redirection Service performs graphical video capture. It does not directly access the video driver or hardware. When the Microsoft Display Test is performed, it directly manipulates the video driver/video controller. This display cannot be captured by the DRAC II Console Redirection Service because the test is being performed at a low level and bypasses the normal video handling of Windows(R). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Time Differential Within the DRAC II Event Logs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Depending on where you are located, a time difference might exist between the DRAC II event log time stamp and the embedded server management (ESM) event log time stamp. NOTE: ESM is not supported on Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) 300, 1300, or 1400 systems. These systems do not display a System Event Log. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Event Logs and POST Codes in Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When accessing ESM event logs and power-on self-test (POST) codes, the DRAC II software might experience a delay in displaying information because it is busy processing another task. When this delay occurs, wait approximately 15 seconds and then refresh the display by clicking "Refresh." NOTE: ESM is not supported on PowerEdge 300, 1300, or 1400 systems. These systems do not display a System Event Log. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Num Lock and Console Redirection ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When you use the console redirection feature on the DRAC II, the <Num Lock> key on the local and remote keyboards can be out of synchronization. If you attempt to use the numeric keypad on the remote console and the keypad does not seem to function properly, switch the state of the <Num Lock> key. The numeric keypad should now work properly on the remote console. Dell recommends not using the mouse and keyboard on a managed node while it is under console redirection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Event Viewer Error After Uninstalling DWC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- After uninstalling the DWC, an error might occur in the event viewer relating to a virtual root problem for DRAC II. The system functions after this event. A problem occurs when you reinstall the DWC to a different directory. You can work around this problem by manually deleting the virtual root. If you reinstall the DWC from the "Dell OpenManage Applications" CD version 2.1 installation menu, the DRAC II virtual root is deleted before installation and no error occurs. Reinstalling the DRAC II software from previous versions of the "Dell OpenManage Applications" CD or from the DRAC II setup executable file on the Applications 2.1 CD might cause this problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II Users on a Linux Node Cannot be Deleted Through IT Assistant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Users loaded into the DRAC II either through the "racconf" utility or through IT Assistant on a managed node running the Red Hat Linux operating system cannot be deleted using IT Assistant. While deleting the user deletes the name from the "Users" tab on IT Assistant, the user name is still loaded on the DRAC II and this user can log into the DRAC II using the DWC. IT Assistant can overwrite the existing user with a new user by deleting the existing user before adding the new user. If you delete multiple existing users, you must add an equal number of new users to ensure that all existing users are overwritten. The "racconf" utility may also be used to delete existing users from the DRAC II. The issue exists in the Linux UCD_SNMP package and is expected to be resolved in a future release of Red Hat Linux. ===================================================================== Additional Information ===================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II System Information Page ------------------------------------------------------- The system information presented by the DRAC II is static information provide by the BIOS when the system boots up. This information is not system status and does not provide real time information for monitoring the system. IT Assistant is used to view system status. ------------------------------------------------------- "Crash" Screen Capture ------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II waits 30 seconds after a system crash to capture the crash screen for viewing. Setting the IT Assistant System Reset Timer to fewer than 30 seconds does not allow DRAC II enough time to capture the crash screen. ------------------------------------------------------- Version Information of DRAC II Files ------------------------------------------------------- The files loaded for DRAC II software version 2.4 do not always display a version number beginning with 2.4. If no changes were made to the file from previous versions of DRAC II software, the file version number is the same as the last version at which the file was revised. ------------------------------------------------------- Location of DRAC II Event Logs ------------------------------------------------------- Alert events logged by the DRAC II system are logged into the Windows application log on the management station where the DRAC II service is running. ------------------------------------------------------------- Warnings Received During DRAC II Reset ------------------------------------------------------------- Changing the Internet protocol (IP) address of the DRAC II causes the DRAC II to reset. If simple network management protocol (SNMP) polls the DRAC II before the card initializes, a temperature warning is logged as the correct temperature is not transmitted until the card is initialized. ====================================================================== Information in this document is subject to change without notice.
