Edition 2 [9/25/00] ==================== ============================================================ Contents of this Readme File ============================================================ This file is divided into the following main sections: I. General Information II. Viewing and Navigating the PDF Manual III. Creating Installation Diskettes from the CD-ROM ============================================================ I. General Information ============================================================ Potential limitations using WinBEEP 32 with paging services ------------------------------------------------------------ WinBEEP 32 is a send-only communication application. WinBEEP 32 cannot receive incoming messages, therefore it does not fully support two-way paging services. In addition, since WinBEEP 32 requires a modem connection to send messages, it may not work with paging services that have a voice greeting at the central phone number. Uninstalling WinBEEP 32 ----------------------- Before you uninstall the WinBEEP 32 software from your computer, make sure that you have stopped the WinBEEP 32 client and/or server programs. Do not attempt to uninstall while WinBEEP 32 is still running. Limitations of the WinBEEP 32 evaluation version ---------------------------------------------------- - With the evaluation version of WinBEEP 32, you are limited to installing on three or fewer computers. - The evaluation software will expire 45 days from the date of installation. Upgrading from the evaluation version to the full version --------------------------------------------------------- If you downloaded the evaluation version of WinBEEP 32 for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT, and you want to upgrade it to the full version, you must first contact your Artisoft dealer or reseller, or the Artisoft Direct Team. The Artisoft representative will assist you in the purchase of a full-version Serial Number and Verification Key. Instructions for contacting Artisoft appear in the Directory of Support Services, which can be downloaded from Artisoft's web site at www.artisoft.com. If you already purchased WinBEEP 32, but choose to install the evaluation version, you can upgrade to the full version by using the WinBEEP 32 Serial Number and Verification key that you received with the product. To perform the upgrade: 1. Go to a computer that you want to upgrade and open WinBEEP. (If your evaluation copy has already expired, skip to step 3) 2. Open the Help | About pulldown menu and select Upgrade. 3. Type in your full-version Serial Number and Verification Key. 4. Click Finish. 5. Restart the computer. 6. Repeat the above steps on each computer that you want to upgrade. Upgrading from a previous installation of Winbeep 32 ---------------------------------------------------- When upgrading from a previous version of Winbeep 32, it is un- necessary to uninstall the previous version. Setup will detect the previous installation and give you the option to save your data files. Your data is contained in two files, IRIS.PST and FOUNTAIN.PST. These files will be backed up automatically in the "\Program Files\Artisoft\Winbeep 32\PST Backup" directory. In addition, these files will automatically be restored during the installation of this upgrade. If you want to be exceptionally cautious, feel free to back up the data files prior to installing the upgrade. WinBEEP 32 on Windows NT ------------------------ The minimum NT system is Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 (SP3). NT 4.0 users can get SP3 from Microsoft. WinBEEP 32 on Windows 95 ------------------------ Windows 95 users must install DCOM for Windows 95 (DCOM95). DCOM95 is included with WinBEEP 32. SETUP will check for DCOM95 and prompt for permission to install it as part of the WinBEEP installation. Later releases of Windows 95 include DCOM95, and it's included in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 installation and Windows 98. DCOM and WinBEEP 32 for Networks -------------------------------- Questions about DCOM and WinBEEP 32 Q: Why does WinBEEP 32 need DCOM? A: WinBEEP 32 is made up of two primary components: a client (or User Interface) and a server (the Paging Engine). The server runs in the background to serve the paging requests from the client, making use of the latest Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) technology from Microsoft. Q: Where can I learn more about DCOM? A: Point your Web browser to Microsoft Support (Technical Support Online) at http://support.microsoft.com/support/ and search for DCOM95, or search for article Q158508 on COM Security, or Q174024 about frequently asked DCOM questions. Troubleshooting Tip ------------------- Problem: WinBEEP 32 logs the error "Could not set notifications." This can happen if WinBEEP 32 is on a Windows NT computer on which SP3 has not been properly installed. Re-install SP3 (or higher). Viewing and navigating the PDF files ------------------------------------ In Windows NT, 95/98: 1. With the Acrobat Reader 3.0 running, click the File menu then click Open. Acrobat Reader can be found on the cd in the \Acrobat\Win32 directory. 2. Select or type in the path to the PDF you want to use. For example, if you want to use a PDF on the WinBEEP 32 CD-ROM, find your CD-ROM drive in the Drives field by selecting or typing in the path D:\MANUALS (where D: is your CD-ROM drive letter). 3. In the File List field, double-click the document you want to view. Then follow the steps below to use the manual. 4. Click the View menu, then click Bookmarks and Page. A list of the main sections in the file appears on the left side of your screen. You can enlarge the Bookmarks window by dragging the double-triangle icon (next to the lower right corner of that window) to the right. 5. Click the triangle to the left of a listing in the bookmarks window to see its subsections. 6. You can tell when an item in the file is hypertext- linked by the way your cursor looks. Ordinarily, the cursor looks like an open hand. Any time the hand passes over a hypertext-linked item, it turns into a pointing finger. Just click to use that link. One click of the mouse takes you from the Chapter Contents list to a topic's location. Cross-references are linked, too. You can click a cross-reference such as "see page 16" and jump directly to the topic on that page. 7. You can look for a specific topic with the Find feature. Just click the binoculars icon in the toolbar and type in a keyword or two. You can repeat the Find command by pressing the F3 key until you find what you're looking for. 8. It's a good idea to pull down the Help menu to learn how to use the reader's toolbar, status bar and other features. For instance, it's helpful to know about the Go Back feature under the View menu, which retraces links you've used and takes you back to your starting point. Printing the PDF files ---------------------- You can print all or parts of a PDF file by following these steps: 1. Open the PDF file you want to print, then pull down the File menu and click Print. 2. Select All, Current or click a page range, then click OK. To print a file from the DOS reader, go to Print Setup and make sure the type of printer you're using is selected: either PostScript or Bitmap (select Bitmap for all non- PostScript printers). If you select Bitmap, scroll through the list of printer drivers and select the appropriate driver. ============================================================ III. Creating Installation Diskettes from the CD-ROM ============================================================ If one or more of the computers on which you want to install WinBEEP 32 do not have CD-ROM drives, you will need to make a set of installation diskettes. NOTE: You must have short-term access to a CD-ROM drive in order to make the installation diskettes. To make the installation diskettes: 1. Have at hand six (6) blank 1.44 MB diskettes. Format the diskettes if necessary. 2. Put the WinBEEP32 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. If the Autorun program starts, wait until the menu appears then click Exit. 3. Use "My Computer" or "Explorer" to locate and open the ARTISOFT\ENG\WINBEEP directory on the CD-ROM. 4. Label the formatted diskettes in a manner similar to that of the subdirectories in the CD-ROM's WINBEEP directory; for example: DISK1, DISK2, DISK3, etc... 5. Place the diskette labeled DISK1 into the floppy drive. Copy the entire DISK1 subdirectory onto the floppy diskette. 6. Repeat step 5 for each floppy diskette and each subdirectory, until you have made a complete set. NOTE: If you are installing WinBEEP 32 on multiple computers without CD-ROM drives, you only need to make one set of installation diskettes. You will, however, need to have a unique WinBEEP 32 Serial Number and Verification Key for each computer to install a licensed copy of the program.Download Driver Pack
