II. Special Considerations
==========================
------------------------------------------------------------
-- Caution on loading drivers in a PCI machine --
------------------------------------------------------------

If, after loading a driver (DOS or OS/2) an error message
is returned indicating that the device could not be found,
and you have verified that the BIOS setup and/or the PCI
setup procedure for the slot in use is correct, then
re-load the driver with the following switch in the
appropriate configuration file for your driver:

    BUSTYPE = PCI1

The exact format of this switch will depend upon the driver
in use. For example, for the ODI workstation driver, add
this line to the NET.CFG file in the LINK DRIVER section
for the AT-2450 card (omit the = sign). For the NDIS 2.0
driver, add this line to the AT-2450 section of the
PROTOCOL.INI file. For the packet driver and the Novell
server drivers, use this switch on the command line which
loads the driver or in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

To de-install the driver, remove the driver line from the
AUTOEXEC.BAT (or a batch file loaded from AUTOEXEC.BAT) or
REM the driver line.

------------------------------------------------------------
-- Cautions on re-booting the PCI machine --
------------------------------------------------------------

Whenever re-booting your PCI machine after configuring or
modifying an application for use with an AT-2450 Network
Adapter Card, always COLD boot (power down then power up
the machine). WARM boots (Ctrl-Alt-Del) may result in a
failure to reset a DMA device.

IV. Adapter Card Installation
==============================

NOTE: IN WINDOWS 95 ENVIRONMENT, RUN CLEAN95.EXE ON THE
CARDASSISTANT DISKETTE BEFORE INSERTING THE ADAPTER
CARD IN YOUR COMPUTER. THIS UTILITY PREVENTS WINDOWS
95 FROM ASSIGNING THE WRONG DRIVER. IF YOU HAVE
ALREADY PUT THE CARD IN AND BOOTED WINDOWS 95,
CLEAN95 CORRECTS THE DRIVER INSTALLATION. SEE
TOPIC V BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.

To install and configure the AT-2450:

1. Install the AT-2450.

Refer to the AT-2450 Installation Manual and the
computer documentation for the correct procedure to
install the AT-2450 Ethernet Adapter Card in the
computer. Ensure that power has been disconnected from
the computer before opening the computer's case.

As a PCI device, the AT-2450 is self-configuring.
Depending on your PCI BIOS, you may need to use the PC
BIOS setup (CMOS setup) utility to determine which IRQs
are available for use by the PCI bus. Refer to the
    computer documentation.

2. Connect the LAN cable to the AT-2450.

IV. CardAssistant Options (16-bit--Win or WFW 3.x--or DOS)
==========================================================

If you use 16-bit version of Windows or DOS platform, run
CardAssistant from native DOS (not the Windows "DOS Prompt"
applet). Boot from a DOS diskette and execute the file
SETUP24.EXE on the ATI CardAssistant diskette.

1. Configure Port or Duplex Mode:

Most AT-2450 settings are handled automatically by the
PCI BIOS and cannot be modified with CardAssistant. The
Configuration dialog box allows you to select media
port on dual-port model cards (default is Auto Select)
and change to full duplex (requires a full-duplex hub)
(default is Half Duplex). Press F10 when complete to
    accept changes.

2. Run Diagnostics:

Performs simple internal tests to indicate that the
card should be operating correctly. Boot into DOS
without loading a driver to perform diagnostic tests.
(Check batch and config files used in boot routine.)

V. CardAssistant Options (32-bit--Win NT and Win 95)
=====================================================

When running Windows 95 or Windows NT, use CA.EXE for
configuration and SETUP24.EXE to run diagnostics.

1. Install CA.EXE:

Use Windows Run menu item to launch CA.EXE from the
CardAssistant floppy diskette. The File:Install CardAssistant
menu item copies the ATI adapter card setup and diagnostics
utility, CA.EXE, and help files to the ATI directory on the
hard drive. Windows NT only: You must reboot to load the
    CardAssistant driver.

2. Configure Port or Duplex Mode:

Most AT-2450 settings are handled automatically by the PCI BIOS
and cannot be modified with CardAssistant. The Configuration
dialog box allows you to select media port on dual-port model
cards (default is Auto Select) and change to full duplex
(requires a full-duplex hub) (default is Half Duplex). Press
F10 when complete to accept changes.

3. Run Diagnostics:

Performs simple internal tests to indicate that the card
should be operating correctly. Do not perform diagnostic
tests if a driver is loaded. Boot into DOS without loading a
driver to perform diagnostic tests. (Check batch and config
    files used in boot routine.)

Windows 95: Reboot and immediately press F8. Select option #7
"Safe mode command prompt only" from the list. Execute the file
SETUP24.EXE on the ATI CardAssistant diskette.

VI. DOS Command Line Options
============================

It is also possible to configure an adapter card with the
SETUP24 program from the DOS command-line interface. You
can use switches that express the configuration in the
invoking command line. These methods may be convenient for
the network administrator who may wish to prepare and
configure many AT-2450 cards for users in an assembly-line
approach.

To run the SETUP24 program from the DOS command line or in
batch mode, the syntax is as follows:

    setup24 [parameters]

where "parameters" may be one or more of the following (in
either upper or lower case):

/r=filename filename = name of configuration file to read
/w=filename filename = name of config. file to write
/p=port port = UTP, BNC, AUI, FIBER port, or AUTO
/X performs diagnostics (when no driver is
loaded; other parameter switches are ignored)
/d=mode mode = full or half-duplex (default) commun.
  /? Displays the parameter switches
  /s Show current configuration (settings)

For example:

    setup24 /p=UTP
    setup24 /p=Fiber
    setup24 /w=c:\ati\adapcard.prm

Using the command-line method, the SETUP24 program will
configure the adapter card according to the parameters
specified. Not all parameters need be specified - any
parameter not specified will cause that configuration value
to remain unchanged. For example:
    setup24 /p=BNC
changes only the selected port to the BNC port, but leaves
all other configuration values unchanged.

The /w and /r parameters are specialized switches which
should be used on their own (i.e., without specifying other
parameters). They are used instead of the command-line
configuration switches to create a configuration file that
SETUP24 can use to configure subsequent cards. You use
the /w switch to create a file from an adapter card and the
/r switch to configure a card by reading the configuration
from the file. Alternatively, you can create a configuration
file using a text editor. This file is an ASCII file that
must contain ALL parameter values IN ORDER. The order is:

Board instance The identifier of the adapter card
                     being configured; the first adapter
                     card is 1
Duplex Mode Half Duplex or Full Duplex
Media Selected Ethernet medium or AUTO SELECT

NOTE:
If you have multiple adapter cards in the same computer,
the setup program counts them when it runs. This count
correlates to the "board instance" parameter in the
configuration batch file. The cards are counted by base
I/O address in descending order (from the highest address
to the lowest). When using command-line parameter values,
SETUP24 can only configure one AT-2450 card at a time. If
multiple boards are to be installed, either invoke
CardAssistant's graphical user interface or use a
  configuration file:
  e.g. "setup24 /CWfile.nam".

Comment lines are preceded by "//".

The /X parameter is a specialized switch that performs
diagnostic checks on the AT-2450 adapter card installed in
the computer instead of executing the setup program. This
switch should be used on its own (i.e., without
specifying other parameters) and with no driver loaded.
