PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO BEGINNING!

HARDWARE INSTALLATION

1. Power off the PC and remove its cover.  Turn off the computer and all peripherals.  Follow the instructions in your PC User's Guide to remove the cover.

2. Insert and secure the adapter.  Select any available PCI slot and remove the slot cover.  Carefully install the adapter into the expansion slot by firmly pressing the card into the slot until the adapter is snugly seated.  Fasten the retaining bracket with the screw from the slot cover.

3. Replace the PC cover.  Replace the computer's cover and reconnect any previously disconnected cables.

4. Repeat the above procedure to fit the network adapter into any other computers to be networked.

You are now ready to physically connect this computer to the hub using twisted pair cable (UTP).

CONNECTING TO THE 10/100MBS HUB

1. To connect the UTP cable to the hub, align the RJ-45 connector on one end of the twisted-pair cable with the notch on the network adapter's RJ-45 port and insert it into the port until it clicks into place.
2. Align the RJ-45 connector on the other end of the twisted-pair cable with the notch on one of the hub's RJ-45 ports and insert it until it clicks into place.
3. Repeat the procedure in steps 1 and 2 to connect the other PCs to the hub.

NOTE:  You cannot connect the nodes directly to each other through straight twisted-pair cable.

4. Plug the hub power adapter into an AC power source and then into the hub's power socket.  Your network components are now connected.

NOTE:  There is no power switch on the hub.  Once the power adapter is connected, the hub is powered on.

Your network is now ready for software installation.

DOS  INSTALLATION

1. Insert the LANtastic 8.0 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.  

2. At the command prompt type in the CD-ROM drives letter (i.e. D:) then Enter. From the CD-ROM drive type Install then Enter.

3. On the Welcome screen you will have a chance to Read the README.TXT file, it is strongly recommended that you do so.  Select CONTINUE then Enter when you are ready.

Note: If you would like a more detailed description of any of the options on any of the setup screens, click the F1 for help if you would like more information about any of the install screens.

4. Please Read the Agreement then select "I Agree" then Enter.

5. Type in your Serial Number then Enter.  Type in the Verification Key.


6. Type in the name you want to use to identify this computer on the network.  Easy to remember descriptive names are recommended.  

7. Select the Drive you want to install the file on if you have more than one option, then Enter. 

8. Enter to accept default directory.

9. By default LANtastic will install all files, even server files and Share its resources.  LANtastic is a peer-to-peer network, what this means is that any or all computers on the network can be servers if they have drives or printers that others need access to.  At this point in time if you do not want anyone else to access this machine then you would select Do Not Share my computer's drives and printers.  Otherwise just hit Enter. 

10. Enter to KEEP maximum connected computers at 10

11.  This next screen, Additional Options, offers the ability to connect to Novell or Microsoft Networks and HP JetDirect devices but for the purpose of this product you should not have to worry about this option.  Enter. 

12.  Select Adapter.  The starter kit that you purchased includes the NDC 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter (MX-A).  To properly install the adapter drivers, insert the adapter diskette in the floppy drive (A: or B:).  Select NDIS Support for non-Artisoft adapter.  Enter the drive letter that the floppy is in. (A: or B:) then Enter.  Settings for the NDC 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter (MX-A) will be displayed.  Alt+O to accept or Tab to Ok and enter. Enter on Yes.

13.  LANtastic Setup Summary will be displayed next.  Verify the information is correct, then OK to perform the installation.  

14.  Hit any key when asked on Finishing up screen. 

15.  Select Yes on the option to Make Permanent Connections after restart if you automatically want to be prompted to make drive or printer connections to another server on the network. Enter. Please wait will Setup loads and copies files.

16.  Installation Complete.  Press any key to continue. If you choose to ESC to DOS the Network will not be active until you do restart the computer. REMOVE THE FLOPPY FROM THE DISK DRIVE BEFORE REBOOTING.

LANtastic should now be successfully installed on this computer.  Proceed to the next machine or test your connections if you have already installed LANtastic on another machine.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
