                        Installing Fast IrDA

Fast IrDA communicates at speeds up to 4 Mbps. It requires IRQ 3 or IRQ 4
and DMA 3.

System Installation Requirements

HP OmniBook with Windows 95 installed (Supported versions include version 4.00.950 A, 4.00.950 B, 4.00.950 C)

The Windows 95 version can be verified by looking at the system properties
(Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/).

Infrared Support for Windows 95 Version 2.0 drivers. These drivers are
located on the hard disk in C:\OMNIBOOK\DRIVERS\WIN95\IRDA. These drivers
are also located on the HP OmniBook Recovery CD in the
\OMNIBOOK\DRIVERS\WIN95\IRDA directory.

Procedure

1. Uninstall IR if it is already installed
        - In the Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs.
        - If "Infrared Support for Windows 95 Version 2.0" is not present,
          go to step 2.
        - Highlight "Infrared Support for Windows 95 Version 2.0".
        - Click the "Add/Remove" button to remove it.
        - Restart the computer when prompted to do so.

2. Verify that IRQ 3 is free or already assigned to COM2. (IRQ 4 will also
work if you are willing to disable the serial port - COM1).
        - If a PCMCIA card is present, Windows 95 may have assigned IRQ 3 to it,
but IRQ 9 is also available for PCMCIA.
        - If you must have 2 PCMCIA cards in the system the only IRQ left for
IR is IRQ 4, which means you must disable the COM1 serial port.

3. In BIOS SETUP, enable fast IR
        - Under "System Devices" find the "Infrared Port"
        - Set the Infrared Port to "Enabled".
        - Set the Mode to "FIR".
        - If necessary, set the "Base I/O address" to "2F8 IRQ3" (unless you
need to use IRQ 4, in which case set "3F8 IRQ4").
        - If necessary, set the "DMA channel" to "DMA3".

4. Free DMA 3 by avoiding parallel port ECP mode
        - Under "System Devices" find the "Parallel Port".
        - If the "Mode" is "ECP", change it to another mode such as
          "Bi-directional".

5. Exit SETUP, saving the changes. ("Exit", "Save Changes and Exit", Yes)

6. Check the serial driver
        - In the Control Panel, run "System".
        - Click the "Device Manager" tab.
        - Double-click "Ports (COM & LPT).
        - If "Generic Ir Serial Port" is not present, go to step 8.

        - Highlight "Generic Ir Serial Port".
        - Click the "Remove" button to remove it.
        - Click "OK" to confirm removal.

8. Replace it with SMC's IR serial driver
        - In the Control Panel, run "Add New Hardware".
        - Click "Next" to begin.
        - Select "No" so Windows does not search for new hardware.
        - Click "Next".
        - Scroll down the hardware types list and highlight "Ports (COM & LPT)".

        - Click "Next".
        - When the "Add New Hardware Wizard" window appears, click
          the "Have Disk" button.
        - Type "c:\omnibook\drivers\win95\fastir" and press ENTER.
        - The "Add New Hardware Wizard" should now display "SMC IrCC
(Fast Infrared) Hardware and Driver". Click "Next".
        - Click "Next" for the resource types and settings.
        - Click "Finish" to exit the "Add New Hardware Wizard".
        - Click "No" when prompted to restart Windows.
        - In the Control Panel, run "System".
        - Click the "Device Manager" tab.
        - Double-click "Ports (COM & LPT)".
        - Double-click "SMC IrCC (Fast Infrared) Hardware and Driver".
        - Select the "Resources" tab.
        - If necessary, set the following values (highlight the resource type,
click the "Change Setting" button, set the value and click "OK"):
                - "Input/Output Range" = 2F8 - 2FF
                - "Interrupt Request" = 3
                - "Direct Memory Access" = 3
(The I/O range of 108-10F is OK, no need to change it.)

        - Click the "OK" button on the "Resources" tab.
        - Click the "YES" to restart the computer.

9. Install the IR 2.0 code
        - In the Control Panel, run Add/Remove Programs.

        - Click "Next".
        - Type "c:\omnibook\drivers\win95\irda\setup". (If you are installing
from the recovery CD, use the drive letter for the CD drive.)
        - Click "Next" to run the "Add Infrared Device Wizard".
        - Click "Next" to choose "Built-in Infrared port on laptop...".
        - Select "SMC IrCC (Fast Infrared) Hardware and Driver" and
          click "Next".
        - Click "Next" to use the default ports (COM4 and LPT3).
        - Click "Finish" to exit the "Add Infrared Device Wizard".

10. Install the SMC infrared framer driver
        - Run the Windows Explorer
        - Go to c:\omnibook\drivers\win95\fastir
        - If "irlapfrm.inf" is not displayed:
                - Click "View", and set the options so they don't hide
                  MS-DOS file extensions.
        - Right-click on "irlapfrm.inf".
        - Click "Install" on the menu that pops up.
        - If the Copying Files dialog pops up complaining that it
can't find irlapfrm.inf, tell it to look in
          c:\omnibook\drivers\win95\fastir and click "OK".
        - Shut the computer down and restart it. (Start, Shut Down,
Shut down the computer, then press the ON button).
This initializes the hardware more thoroughly than just rebooting.
