HP SMS MIF Generator Readme File ================================= If you are integrating the TopTools Agent with Microsoft's Systems Management Server(R), please read this file, which covers the following topics: o Terms used o Goals o Software requirements o Installing HP SMS MIF Generator o Controlling the execution of SMSWIN 1.1 TERMS USED _______________ SMS : Microsoft's Systems Management Server DMI : Desktop Management Interface MIF : Management Information Format DMTF: Desktop Management Task Force. A consortium of 12 companies defining standards to manage personal computers. The DMTF defined a set of APIs to access basic informations in a standard way (DMI) and a description language to standardize the description of manageable objects (MIF). The complete DMI specifications can be obtained through the DMTF FTP server (ftp.dmtf.org) or through the DMTF Web Page (www.dmtf.org) 1.2 GOALS __________ When the SMS Inventory Agent runs at an SMS computer, it reports the inventory to a SMS logon server as a binary file. This file contains the computer's inventory in the MIF format. Microsoft's SMS uses an inventory process common to all PC manufacturers. Your HP Vectra, Kayak, or OmniBook has extended capabilities such as security features that are not reported by the standard SMS inventory tool. The goal of SMSWIN.EXE is to export in the SMS Database the complete HP feature set. 1.3 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS _________________________ The software configuration required to run HP SMS MIF Generator program is : o The HP TopTools Agent must be installed on your machine. If it is not, but TopTools is pre-loaded on your PC, open the HP TopTools for Notebooks group (or menu item) and run the SETUP program. If the TopTools Agent is not present on your system, you can get the software from the Web at http://www.hp.com/go/manageability or from a CD orderable from that web site. o Your system must be manageable by Microsoft's SMS. SMSWIN.EXE automatically detects if the SMS client agent has been installed on your desktop. It does not run if your desktop does not belong to a SMS site or is not a HP Vectra, Kayak or OmniBook. o SMSWIN.EXE supports the following operating systems: - Windows 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 - Windows 95 or 98 - Windows NT Version 3.51 or higher 1.4 INSTALLING HP SMS MIF Generator _____________________________________ SMSWIN.EXE is installed optionally together with the TopTools for Notebooks Agent. If your system belongs to a SMS site, the SMSWIN program is automatically launched when you log in. 1.5 CONTROLLING THE EXECUTION OF SMSWIN ________________________________________ By default SMSWIN runs once a week. It scans the DMI database and generates the SMS MIF file corresponding to your configuration. This can take several minutes. If you do not change your machine's configuration very often, you can modify SMSWIN's schedule by editing the file SMSWIN.INI located in the same directory than SMSWIN.EXE. The file SMSWIN.INI controls the execution of SMSWIN.EXE. If it is not present, default values will be used. There are two sections in SMSWIN.INI: 1. [SmsWin] //contains scheduling information frequency = <how often to run> valid values are: hourly daily weekly monthly yearly SMSWIN.EXE will be run as soon as the unit associated with the period changes. e.g. if frequency is yearly and you run SMSWIN on Dec 31 1995 and again on Jan 01 1996 then it will do a scan both times because it last ran in 1995 and the year is now 1996. It will not however run again until 1997. last = <time SMSWIN last did a MIF scan> the time is formatted as follows NNN MMM DD HH:MM:SS YYYY where NNN is the day of the week: Sun, Mon,... MMM is the name of the month: Jan, Feb,... DD is the day of the month HH is the hour MM is the minute SS is the second YYYY is the year If this timestamp is hand modified to something invalid then SMSWIN will run HPIcon = 0 (default) or 1 if HPIcon = 1, SMSWIN will show a new SMS architecture which contains most of the groups of the HP PC MIF file. This new architecture is displayed in the SMS Site Window as an HP icon. For each HP Vectra, Kayak or OmniBook, you can have two different icons displayed in this window: - One icon generated by the standard SMS inventory - One HP icon generated by the SMSWIN inventory. If you only want the original SMS icon, set HPIcon to 0. You can then choose which group you want from the HP PC MIF file by commenting out the corresponding classname in the "exclude" section. Note: for this feature to work, you need to install the TopTools HP Icon SMS integration software on the SMS console. To obtain this software, please contact your HP technical representative. 2. [Exclude] //allows SMSWIN.EXE to skip certain DMI classes. class = <class-string> Some DMI groups have no interest for an inventory point of view. To save some scanning time, you can exclude them from the generated MIF file. To do this, you need to indicate the classname of the groups you don't want. Each DMI group has a classname defined as follows: class = "defining body|class name|version number" To remove a given group from your generated MIF file, place a line class = <class-string> in the [Exclude] section of SMSWIN.INI. To add one group, comment out (//) the corresponding classname The DMTF can change some DMI groups. To reflect this, the version number of the group is incremented. If you don't want to change your SMSWIN.INI file each time the DMTF releases a new version of a given group, limit your "class-string" to "defining body|class name" The following is a sample SMSWIN.INI: [SmsWin] frequency = daily ; or "hourly", "weekly", "monthly", "yearly" last = Sun Jan 01 01:01:01 1991 HPIcon = 1 [Exclude] class = DMTF|ComponentID ;drops all classes with class string starting with "DMTF|ComponentID"Download Driver Pack
